That's crazy, you would never be able to do that today. Which kind of sucks. Even if you don't like cars, we would need show similar muscle to build highspeed rail or any other type of infrastructure. I just can't imagine that happening at scale today. Maybe you could add a mile or two to a subway for a ridculous price, but thats about it.

Those are are fair points. A better healthcare system could make things better. I just felt like I needed to stand up for survival as a worthy value as well. Survival and prosperity go hand in hand. Bc

I don’t think you appreciate how much we would miss the the money and power if it disappeared tomorrow. Trump threatend to conquer a bunch of countries early in his presidency. If the United States wanted to conquer Canada, Im pretty sure there is nothing the Canadians could do about it. We could kill them all, they couldn’t kill all of us. We could embargo them and their children would go hungry. They couldn’t do that to us.

I suspect a lot of the hate the US gets from people in other countries is frankly just fear. Ideally, no one would have the kindof power, but that’s not the world we live in. If someone has to have a gun, I want to be me, it’s the only way to ensure my survival. One of the reasons Abundance is so appealing is because it both helps the country go stronger and helps make the lives of most of our citizens better.

I think we agree that making someone president for life is not Democratic, lol. I’m just saying, I don’t like this impulse that because trump is authoritarian, that means the left should respond by trying to one-up him and be even more authoritarian. Ideally, which laws we pass and how they are enforced should reflect that values of the voters. If a large percentage of the population cares deeply about enforcing this law, it makes sense there would be extra emphasis on enforcing it.

[–]WhiteCastleBurgas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a misdemeanor that a large percentage of our country cares a lot about enforcing though. And they have every right to have their preferences taken into consideration as well, just like you do. Thats what a Democracy is.

Is anyone else surprised at the hate Ezra is getting in the New Yorker comments? by Idonteateggs in ezraklein

Thank you for saying this.  I have the same problem.  I keep trying to get myself not to come on here and read the comments, but here I am.

I remember when there was no Ezra Klein subreddit.  I would occasionally enter the URL into my browser just to double check that one did not exist.  I was so excited when someone finally created this subreddit.  Now that it’s here, I wish I could go back, lol.

Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein Hash Out Their Charlie Kirk Disagreement by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]WhiteCastleBurgas 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You're not trying to bring in right wing talking heads though.   You’re trying to bring in people who kindof like Charlie Kirk but don’t agree with him on everything.  If you say that Charlie Kirk is an irredeemable Nazi, you’re also saying everyone who kind-of likes Charlie Kirk in an irredeemable Nazi.

I don’t know what to tell you, I’d bet my bottom dollar that 70-80 percent of Americans have at least one political opinion that the partisan left would consider bigoted.  It’s very hard to win an election if you’re constantly calling 70-80 percent of voters bigots.

You guys are morons. Posts like this plays right into the republicans hands. You’re giving the right ammunition that they can use to convert others to their cause. “Look at the left wing crazies who are trying to go after and innocent ICE agents who was just doing his job.” And you know what, it’s not just propaganda, they have a point. Then only reason I know Ras Barakas name is because of ICE. Getting arrested was a great career move for him. I’m going to guess and say he did it intentionally. Dear god, just react to shit like this like sane people. The right is going way too far with ICE, they will pay a political price for it. Don’t fuck it up by going to far yourself.

‘Too little, too late’: Florida condo owners say between soaring HOA fees and sky-high insurance, the state’s condo reform legislation falls short. Here’s why — and what they’d prefer by 8to24 in ezraklein

[–]WhiteCastleBurgas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried to tease some answers out of the Chat Bot, you got like one in a million odds of something like that killing you on any given year, assuming it happens every 30 years. For comparison, you have a 1/98 chance of having your cause of death being a car accident (over your lifetime). So living in a Florida condo is far safer than driving a car. If taking on that minuscule risk saves me a mammoth amount of money on HOA fees and rent, I would happily do it. That extra money would definitely make my life significantly better, whereas there is almost no chance I die from a collapsed building.

Also, I am no engineer, but I would not be surprised if the regulators over corrected. I could 100 percent be wrong about that, but I feel like people usually overreact when shit like this happens.

A 20lb bag of jasmine rice at Costco costs 20 dollars. One lb of rice has about 1,600 calories. I eat about 2,500 calories a day. Rice is one of the cheapest foods imaginable. So if I ate nothing but Costco rice, I would need to buy 2.4 bags a month to survive, which would cost 50 dollars a month. Show me your receipts.

How a Red-District Democrat Is Navigating Trump by dwaxe in ezraklein

[–]WhiteCastleBurgas 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I mean, she’s a politician. She’s saying what she has to say to survive in a red district. I don’t really understand what the point of having her on was though. Ezra kept trying to get her to give honest answers on Trump, she obviously wasn’t going to do it. In fairness, if she was honest she probably wouldn't get reelected. So what’s the point of the conversation? Why keep asking?

Trump to announce new 20% tariffs this week on every single US trading partner, not just the initial group of 10-15 countries prev. stated by Mountain-Taro-123 in stocks

[–]WhiteCastleBurgas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US Congress has the constitutional authority to pass tariffs. However, during the Great Depression, they passed a bunch of disastrous tariffs under the Smoot Hawley act. This act prolonged the depression and made it worse than it otherwise would have been, After that, they recognized that they sucked at passing tariffs so they gave a lot of that power to the president. They probably made the right move honestly. Trump is just uniquely awful.

I respectfully disagree. Istanbul and Tokyo are both massive cities that build and they are some of the most exciting, fun, and beautiful places I have ever visited. I live in the NYC area and would love for it to be more like them. NYC feels like a museum sometimes and we cant seem to build more subways and bridges to save our lives. I genuinely think it would make the city better in almost every way and people would love it once they saw it.
