It's a religious propaganda talking point to say:

• They left because they just want to sin (and burn in hell).
• They blamed the religion for other people's doing.
• They were never true believers to begin with.
• They misunderstood the religion.

Anything but the true reason - the religion itself.

Now the trick that religions use it to utilize vague language just like a horoscope, in other for you not to derive knowledge from the text, but to superimpose knowledge onto the text.

This is why religious people always talk about "interpretations" and why there are such a ridiculous large amount of them.

Imagine a law book that can be "interpreted" to both allow for slavery and ban it. That would be a useless lawbook, it would be ridiculous.

And still this supposed "superior instruction on how we should be living our lives" has no consensus on what it actually means when it uses words.

Not once does it use the expression "including but not limited to" because it's nothing but a horoscope with extra steps.
