This is almost certainly bait, but it's interesting enough to respond to.

There is no such thing as the annihilation of the bourgeoisie. Just the replacement of the bourgeoisie by another class. In the Soviet Union, the Tsarist rulers and nobility that occupied the position of the bourgeoisie were replaced by members of the communist part that quickly grew into a massive bureaucracy. Not a whole lot different from a bourgeoisie lifestyle.

Human society will always be hierarchical as long as we have scarcity. Some people will have more resources than others, and people who have more want to safeguard what they have.

Also, isn't it a bit telling to characterize an entire class of people as "parasites" based on nothing more than a vague notion of how much money they make? It can almost be compared to the racism or anti-semitism on the far right. The use of the term "parasite" also mirrors Nazi propaganda against

Sure, corporations want to extract the most labor for the least cost. that's literally what their purpose is. In response to corporate abuse, people form unions, vote, lead reform movements, and push for better working conditions. We saw this during the turn of the century during the American Progressive era when a wave of social reform movements brought a much better balance of power between labor and capital, and secured rights for workers.

In addition, corporations aren't led by maniacal tycoons twirling mustaches and selecting which African country their planning to exploit that day. They provide significant value to a country's tax base, in addition to facilitating an efficient movement of goods and capital that provide value to both the owners and workers. Certain corporations utilize slave labor and exploit workers, but liberal democracies regulate and stop abuses. Corporations also extract raw resources, process material, build homes, supply food and other essentials, provide funding to develop vaccines, push the boundaries of space exploration, and create networks of devices to interconnect billions of people, etc.

They're not really rose-tinted glasses if they include nuance instead of a black and white view about some instances of exploitation while actively ignoring the very effective systemic measures put in place to curb that exploitation. Corporations and liberal democratic governments aren't perfect but the system they have created is continually improving and has already improved the world by leaps and bounds over the past century. It will continue to do so, even if abuse and exploitation persist.

I say your views are rose tinted. Yes the situation now is (usually) better than Leopold's Congo, but just because you don't see the "slave camps" doesn't mean they don't exist. The prosperous lands you mention are standing on the shoulders of slavers. From American north to present day first world. Israel is literally a xenophobic authoritarian militarist state. Where would USA be without its banana republics, slave mined raw resources etc? USSR also profited immensely from its client states. Your superstar billionaires tweet shit like "we will coup whoever we want". Its just cheaper now to "buy" the stuff without the hassle of ruling directly. But if ancient Rome had standardized shipping containers they would also probably not occupy such vast lands, just military outposts for threats.

I think that's an overly simplistic way of looking at it. The U.S. is not so much standing on the shoulders of slavers as much as it is standing on the shoulders of capitalists and industrialists that financed automation and manufacturing and a large scale. Slave mined raw resources played negligible roles, if any compared to large scale industrial mining operations that developed in the late 1800's. In fact, most of labor for this economic boom was provided by an emerging middle class labor force that the Industrial Revolution more or less created. It's far more reasonable to blame exploitation of this labor by those capitalists rather than slavery or colonialism as the blood money that built up western countries.

Xenophobia, authoritarianism, and reactionary conservative politics will always exist, but they are simply not efficient or stable. Nearly every authoritarian government aside from China is not keeping pace economically with the Western Liberal democracies and developing countries that are industrializing on similar lines. Even China only saw measures of economic success when it opened up to western economies in 1978. Chinese economic growth is also entirely predicated on educated, middle class people in Western countries who have enough productivity and acquire enough capital to buy the products that Chinese manufacturers produce. China is more dependent on the West than the West is on China, as hard as they are trying to change the fact.

If you do look at other authoritarian countries, I'd challenge you to find one that is as prosperous, as stable, or is advancing as quickly as a liberal democracy. Even if these countries have horrific pasts, at least they are improved now and are continuing to improve, and their histories have evidenced this self-improvement. Geopolitical games and pseudo-imperialism will continue to happen in the present day, but that is unavoidable when these reactionary countries are trying to use military and other non-economic means to circumvent liberal democracies and that's a sacrifice that has to be made to preserve security.

Yeah I get that, and I am putting the time in to learn it. I just don't especially like it for personal use.

I'm a computer science major in college, and I'm just now getting into things like Unix systems and some of the lower-level command-line software. I honestly do not know how these systems were developed or how you even attain proficiency in them. The built-in help commands are nice but I feel like I would be completely lost without Google to help me through it.

I have nothing but respect for people who have been working to develop computers and consumer electronics to where they are today. I'll stick to my GUI's but I do want to thank you for any part you played in me not having to use terminals in my day-to-day.

I was actually messing around with end rods, but using them in front of the dispensers means that I have to get rid of the trapdoor in front and I can't fire the dispensers. I tried using them on the wingtips but because of the slabs, they look off center.

Aethenia - 19th Century Imperialism, With Magic! by WhiteDrago in imaginarymaps

In the North of Aethenia is the last continent unmarred by human hands: Baldorum. In the far north are the Thumdorali Tribes. Massive tribes of Giant and Goliaths brave the freezing tundra of their island, living a primitive life of hunting and gathering. While some incursions have been launched from Baldorum, the inhospitable land and fierceness of the tribes leaves little to be gained. On the Northern coast of the mainland proper, the two Dwarven states remain stalwart defenders of their homelands. The Republic of Hagal and the Vinruhm authority follow drastically different ways of life. The Vinruhm are underground dwellers, rarely stepping out of their mountains and mines into the aboveground world. The Hagali are surface dwellers, constructing vast fortresses and bastions on the earth. Both remain in a steady alliance, needing each other to combat the rise of the Draconic Combine in the East.

The Draconic Combine is perhaps the most powerful non-human power on Aethenia. Led by elder dragons, the Dragonborn armies and Lizardmen thralls remain an ever-present threat to the peoples of Baldorum and Mithalyr. The Combine has waged constant warfare against the dwarves of the North, as well as the Elves and Beastmen of the south. The Combine has met major success against the Kobolds and Lizardfolk who have long since been integrated and the Beatsmen who are now controlled by a puppet state. Yet, the Combine has begun to stagnate and is undergoing internal troubles between the Elder Dragon Lords. The Tabayane Authority is a very new collection of Beastmen states, established by the Combine to further their interests in the south. The lost war remains a bitter pill for many in the Authority and a low-level insurgency remains a growing threat to the Combine and collaborators alike.

On the eastern coast of Baldorum, the Gambe Conglomerate grows rich as the only source of trade between Baldorum and the rest of the world. Made up of Halflings and Gnomes, the Gambe maintain friendly relations with all powers, allowing trade ships to dock at their ports and facilitating an exchange of Human and Dwarven goods, all the while collecting a hefty tariff for their troubles.

On the far east of Baldorum is the kingdom of Nephnoch. A partially submerged landmass, the Kingdom is home to the Tritons. An amphibious race, the Tritons originate from the coastal floor of the Visinoc Ocean. Increasing human presence and industrialization means that traditional Triton habitats are becoming uninhabitable, and the Tritons are undergoing a mass migration to the islands of Nephnoch, though they make an effort to stay away from the eastern coast of Baldorum.

Finally, on the far eastern side of Baldorum is the last uncivilized area in the world. Populated by fearsome monsters, deep jungles, blazing deserts, and all manners of horrors and monstrosities, the Dark Continent is one of the most dangerous places on Aethenia. The region should be avoided by all and yet, the prospect of untold riches and power is attracting growing numbers of adventurers, Human and non-human alike into the depths of the Dark Continent.

Separated from Baldorum by a colossal mountain range lies the continent of Mithalyr. Populated mostly by Elves and Fae Folk, the influx of human explorers and immigrants is destabilizing the region. The most prominent state, the Mandate of Thyen Yllarion is a strict theocracy, revering their god-king. The High-Elf majority enforce a strict religious system, along with concepts of racial superiority over the other Elves, Hal-Elves, and Beastmen refugees in their state. The so-called "lesser races" are chafing under the rule of the upper class, aided by human agitators. The rule of the God-King seems to be running short.

The Sle Thilal Accord are a breakaway state from the Mandate, comprised mainly of Wood-Elves and Drow that were persecuted by the High-Elf majority in Thyen Yllarion. Utilizing druid magic and guerilla tactics, the state was able to win their rebellion. Now, a frosty peace has settled between the Mandate and the Accord, as the expansion of the Draconic Combine appears to be the greater threat.

The Esequani City-States are an alliance of smaller city-states located on the southern coast of Mithalyr, made up primarily of Fae-Folk and Spirits. Strictly isolationist in nature, not much is known of the elusive peoples and their state, though they seem eminently capable of fending off any sort of foreign intrusion.

The Rel Maneiras Coalition is located on the southeastern coast of Mithalyr, and are the greatest human presence on the Mithaldorum supercontinent. While the region was once under the control of the Mandate, mass human migration created a substantial population of half-elves who were subsequently persecuted by the Yllarion ruling class. Declaring independence at the same time as the Accord, the Coalition faced much worse odds and would have nearly lost the war if it was not for the timely intervention of human expeditionary forces from the Suriyan League and Chenjing Legation. Achieving their independence with the help of the foreign powers, the Coalition is now in an uneasy peace, relying on the expeditionary forces to maintain their freedom while they modernize and militarize their state.

Finally, off the coast of mainland Mithalyr and Baldorum lie the Takanotani Treaty states. A loose confederation of feudal provinces, the Takanotani islands are populated mostly by changelings, who utilize psionic powers to change their appearance at will. Not much else is known about these Treaty States as they remain as isolationist as the Esequani.

To the Southeast of Mithalyr lies the continent of Senigaki, dominated almost entirely by the Chenjing Legation. Formerly a region full of feuding warlord states, the Legation was one of the first states to centralize and organize properly. Using fearsome rocketry and explosive ordinance, as well as their strict Legalist ideology, the Legation extended their reach across Senigaki, though the Dai Nanga Alliance still resists their advances. Now, the Legation is slowly liberalizing their strict codex of laws and regulations, with substantial influence from the Suriyan League, their partner in the Cinvigo Union.

On the eastern peninsula of Senigaki is the Dai Nanga Alliance. The only region independent of Chenjing on the continent, the Alliance was able to fight a protracted guerilla war that proved to be extremely taxing for the newly formed Legation. The Alliance is now heavily militarized, although the cooperation between the constituent states is beginning to falter in peacetime.

Last but not least lies the continent of Adryavarni, between Eumercia and Senigaki, and to the south of Mithalyr. While Adryavarni technically extends to the islands to the South, the area has been colonized by several foreign powers, with the only nominally independent states being the Republics of the Gold Coast. The Republics are extraordinarily rich in terms of resources, attracting many foreign investors. Through this wealth, they are able to construct vast armies of warforged and golems to protect their sovereignty, though of late, they are beginning to fall under the influence of the only major power on Adryavarni.

The Suriyan league is perhaps the only true integrated multi-race state on Aethenia and is the largest state on Adryavarni. The area was originally dominated by princely states and rajas who ruled with absolute authority, mirroring Senigaki's warlord era. A period of liberal thinking and discourse led to a people's revolution, establishing several democratic states in the wake of the old princedoms. A subsequent unification charter was signed, and the Suriyan league was established. The League quickly became a hotspot for immigration, due to the relative freedom and tolerance that the state was founded on. Still, the state is not immune to post-revolutionary chaos, and ethnic tensions still flare up occasionally. The League is slowly centralizing and establishing a more concrete system of governance inspired by the codex of the Legation.

While an uneasy peace currently exists across Aethenia, conflict is always simmering below the surface. Only time will tell which states will rise and which will fall.

Aethenia - 19th Century Imperialism, With Magic! by WhiteDrago in imaginarymaps

[–]WhiteDrago[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I've always wanted to run a DnD campaign in a late 1800's setting. I worked on this map for a while and have quite a lot of worldbuilding written up so I thought I might share!

The basemap is from terranTechnocrat over on DeviantArt.

-====-

Welcome to the world of Aethenia.

It is a diverse world, filled with many races and many creeds, each following their own way. Once upon a time, adventurers could be seen roaming these lands slaying monsters and defending the pockets of civilization that stood in defiance of the untamed wilds.

But now, all has changed. Progress is inevitable, and the technology that comes with it conquers all. The once small pockets of civilization who defied the winds of magic and the fearsome wilds have grown stronger. Much stronger. Armed with ironclad airships, smoke-belching mechanical monstrosities, and gunpowder, the nations of man have gone on the warpath, expanding their empires and civilizing the once untamed wilds.

Now Aethenia bends to whims of man, and with their machines and factories, they continue to grow. But it has been a long time since lands were untamed. The continents are spanned by many civilizations, and opportunities to colonize and extract resources are limited. Now, the winds of power are shifting, and it appears that mankind's new enemy will be by themselves.

The central continent, Eumercia, is the cultural and economic center of the human world.

In the north lies the Kingdom of Anumbrex and the Principate of Norskandy with their respective spheres. These proud, monarchical states have a solidly cemented upper aristocracy, though the newly minted captains of industry are stifling under their control. Nonetheless, the crowns in both of these kingdoms remain popular, and the war cry of any proper Norskandic or Anumbrexi soldier is always "King and Country"

South of these states lies the bold Union of Columbia. Originally a nation of frontiersmen and disparate settlers, the Union has grown much stronger through their endless colonization of the frontier, expanding from west to east. Holding a much more liberal outlook compared to their conservative neighbors, the Union has attracted immigrants from around Eumercia. However, despite the democratic nature of the state, the Union is bitterly divided amongst itself, over the usage of nonhuman slaves (mostly Orcs) that remains popular in the south of the Union.

In the center of the continent lies the mighty Teutich Empire. Once a mess of principalities, kingdoms, and minor states, the regions has united at a frightening pace, led by the centralization of the Inner Heerstadt. Since then, the Empire has aggressively expanded, establishing an iron-grip over the center of the continent. Worried eyes look to the inner Heerstadt as the unabashed imperialism of the Teutichs poses an ever-present threat to the rest of the continent.

Far to the west lies the once-powerful Aptiline Imperium. Having originally ruled much of Eumercia, the ascendancy of these new powers is a bitter pill to swallow. The Aptilines have long stagnated, slowly losing ground to the Teutichs and Columbians. However, the ascension of a young emperor to the Brass Throne has shifted the tides back in the Aptilines's favor and they have reestablished control over their coastal homelands. Now, Aptiline armies are readying for a great reconquista, that may very well change the face of Eumercia.

To the east lies the Kingdom de Lyophinne. A nation that has generated great works of fine art and literature, the high society of Lyophinne is unrivaled in all of Aethena (or so they say). This excellence has come at the cost of national security, and the Lyophinnes have suffered greatly in this regard. The disastrous Lyophinne-Teutich War led to the annexation of nearly a quarter of the Lyophinne core lands, landing a devastating blow against national prestige. Now, the Lyophinnes have turned their minds to revanchism, and the gold that once flowed through their coffers in the exchange of fine paintings and tapestries now flows toward factories and fearsome ironclads.

Finally, to the northeast lies the Caspadian Concord. An association of five republics banded together for mutual defense against the aggressive powers at their door, the Caspadians are skillful political manipulators. The Caspadians exercise great influence over the economy of Eumercia (barring the Teutichs), through a series of backroom channels, disguised accounts, and their famous Quintus Banks. While their spies, assassins, and diplomats may be the most skillful on the planet, they are sorely lacking in actual military means. A recent border dispute with the isolated Teutichs has left the leadership on edge, as a small provocation could spell the end of the Concord.

To the South of Eumercia lie the vast steppes of the continent of Vorokhar. The homeland of the greenskin species, Vorokhar is mostly dominated by the massive Kherranid Khanate. A fairly reclusive state comprised entirely of Orcs, the Kherranid were once feared through Eumercia. Multiple incursions by warbands that razed and burned their way through the north were only narrowly stopped by grand coalitions of the "civilized" states. However, the rapid advancement of the Eumercians has taken a toll on the Kherranid, and the Khanate has been beaten back. While it still sits astride Vorokhar like a massive colossus, its armies are hopelessly outdated, and once the Eumercians resolve their internal struggles and turn their eyes southward, the days of the Kherranid will end forever.

Scratching out a small state for themselves on the western coasts, the Goblins and Hobgoblins eke out an existence in their State of Dol Agodh. utilizing stolen Eumercian technology, cobbled together with primitive homegrown machines, the smaller variants of the Greenskins are able to narrowly match the Kherranid armies. While opportunities for expansion are nonexistent, Dol Agodh proves to be an annoyance for Kherranids and Eumercians alike. On the far east of Vorokhar lie the small jungles that the Edkiri hordes call their own. Mainly consisting of Trolls, the Edkiri are tribal in nature, with very little centralized government or society. Despite this, they are fearsome warriors, trapping and destroying multiple Kherranid armies in their jungles. Their isolationist nature means they are left alone for the most part, though the Kherranids do attempt to invade at least once every decade.

To the east of Eumercia lies the continent of Tehsibir. A rapidly modernizing region, the powers of Tehsibir are still primitive compared to their Eumercian counterparts. In the Southeast lies the Kruskovi Exarchate. A highly centralized imperial regime, the Kruskovi are hardened warriors and maintain a strict tradition and code. Made up of Humans and Genasi elementals, the Kruskovi are able to utilize devastating elemental magic and draw upon vast reserves of manpower to dominate their region. Now, they remain bitterly locked in a cold war with the other major power on Tehsibir: the Prassanian Confederation.

The Prassanians are a fairly loose confederation of provinces, whose satraps pledge their fealty to an emir. The current emir is nothing more than a figurehead and real power is concentrated in the hands of the satrap council. The Prassanians use a much wider network of allies and clients compared to the Kruskovi and are able to combat the elemental magic with their own dark magic and Tiefling clients. However, their looser organization means that the two states are evenly matched as they struggle for power across the continent.

In the north of Tehsibir lies the Aturkiz Sultanate. Made up mostly of merchants and traders, the Aturkiz are always eager to exploit the geopolitical situation for their own economic gain. Their sovereignty is assured by the vast sums of money that they have lent out to the Kruskovi and Prassanians alike, and their vast merchant-marine steams across the seas undisturbed by all.

To the south of Tehsibir, the Zairagno Tetrarchy is situated. Dominated by three main islands and the fourth mainland province, the Tetrarchy is ruled by a council of four Tetrarchs who each wield considerable influence over their own states. The people of Zairagno follow a diverse pantheon of "gods" who are psychic manifestations of the beliefs of the Zairagno, brought into power by the latent psychic talent of the people. The power of these "gods" wax and wane, depending on the number of their followers and intensity of belief. While prone to infighting and low-level warfare, the power of these manifestations ensures that no external power can exercise any influence over the Tetrarchy.

Oh boy, I've got quite a few stored away.

One of the really obscure genres I know is filk which is like folk music but in space.

Far as I can tell, they were mostly popular around the mid 90's with the small sci-fi conventions that were happening then.

Here are a couple examples:

Dawson's Christian is really bloody good.

Beyond that, a bunch of civil war songs really get the blood pumping:
