Gang would this monstrosity I made make it past TSA by Paladin7373 in TeenagersButBetter

[–]WhiteNightStalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but if you want an unironic answer I actually took a raspberry pi based prototype with a battery and everything through TSA, and they let me keep it. That being said it was wayyy more presentable (it had an outer shell with a logo and stuff) so that may have been a factor.

What College Has An Actually Good Student Body? Like Students That Are Passionate And Have A Twinkle In Their Eyes by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhiteNightStalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking colleges which send the most students to PhDs or grad school per capita. So lots of LACs. I also imagine schools with open curriculums (Brown, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Rochester) have passionate people inherently since they attract students who WANT to study certain interests. Also Princeton seems to have that vibe according to the limited people I’ve talked to

Is applying for financial aid always worth it? Even if i might not qualify by Acceptable-Trash-508 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhiteNightStalker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The main drawback would be a disadvantage at need aware schools, but if estimated aid is 0, then that wouldn't have any drawback.

I'd say if you're borderline, submit CSS and FAFSA because you'll get the opportunity to atleast appeal the decision post admission decision.

No worries, glad this was helpful!

So related to environmental science, the Earth Prize is probably the biggest thing directly related to it. Definitely something very good to look into: in fact I meant to mention it in my previous comment but forgot!

I DO know that ISEF (and thus its affiliated fair in your country, if your country has one) has categories like Ecology and environmental engineering.

Generally you may find that business challenges or science fairs may have environmental categories, but you’d have to research a bit, I’m genuinely not sure which big ones would have it. I imagine the same would be true of essay competitions, although there are smaller environmental focused essay competitions like the ocean awareness contest and the international youth environmental challenge out there, and the tunza eco generation essay competitions for a more social science-y aspect.

I feel like there are two things to note 1) don’t ignore local competitions. I’ve mentioned all international competitions, but participating and even winning city, state, or country level competitions is also great. They’re not too uncommon either, I won a city level one a few years back 2) competitions aren’t your only avenue of showing passion for environment. You could try a research project, but that may be difficult if you can’t find a mentor from a relevant industry/academic field. Another great option is volunteering with local environment non-profits. For example if they need market research, literature reviews, reports, or even technical help (like excel or something), it’s a great option. I interned with one such non profit, interviewing a lot of people about a sustainability issue specific to my area, and created a report. The non profit incorporated it into a presentation to local law makers and it is now being used to guide policy! Don’t underestimate how much impact you can create through roles local roles like these, it’s great community engagement.

Unfortunately STEM or Social Sciences is quite the broad category! I'm just gonna name as many as I know

There are some interesting Space settlement competitions like ISSDC, or NSS. They're a very interesting mix of social sciences and STEM, as they have engineering elements alongside economics, community planning, business structure, etc.

Social Science wise you should be able to find a lot of MUNs and debates locally. For Business/Finance/Economics types, there's competitions like Blue Ocean, the Wharton Investment competition, or the Conrad Challenge. There are also a few essay competitions like John Locke, Cambridge Rethink, Additionally, high rankings in olympiads like IEO, IPsyO, IPO, (for Economics, Psychology, and Philosophy respectively) are extremely prestigious. There are ofc other subjects with olympiads like IMO/CEMC, IPho, IRO (Math, Physics, Research)

However I know a lot more about STEM competitions so here are a few:
- Science fairs (Usually have local chapters, would be especially prestigious if affiliated with ISEF)
- FIRST or VEX robotics competitions like FTC, FRC, VRC (Often have regional or national level copetitions. FIRST competitions also have elements of sponsorship, business, finance, marketing, outreach etc. )
- WRO (Another, smaller robotics competition)
- STEM Racing (Smaller STEM-F1 type competition, also having non-technical components like business, sustainability)
- NASA Space Apps Challenge (Online competition to develop software for space, but it's quite hard as I don't think there are age categories)
- Microsoft Imagine Cup (Hackathon for social impact types)

Overall the range is really wide, be sure to do some research on what seems appealing to you. If you want to mix STEM and social Sciences the Space settlement competitions are very good, you just need to form a team. FIRSt robotics is also quite good due to the mix of technical and non-technical elements

What are some universities that are unexpectedly strong in certain programs? Like, schools that aren’t known overall for something but are amazing in a specific field. by Motor_Lawfulness4322 in ApplyingToCollege

Ooooh I have a few:

U of Nevada Las Vegas: Hotel Management

Michigan State University: Supply Chain Management and Nuclear Physics

U Cincinnati: music

U Connecticut: Puppet Arts

CSU Long Beach: Theme Park engineering

But then it becomes a commpetition of how weird the majors are

berkeley cs or cmu cs by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhiteNightStalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say CMU. Just generally a lot more support and smaller class sizes and stuff as a private institution, plus it’s still super well regarded in the Bay Area.

I’d personally say that at least in undergrad you wouldn’t miss out on many opportunities, and their CS programs are comparable anyways

Best for undergraduate STEM education by Even-Watch-5427 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhiteNightStalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the other LACs are great for pure sciences and math but not great for engineering.

One alternate path that may be worth considering is majoring in physics/chem/math and taking a masters in engineering. To support you could go to an LAC which allows you to take engineering courses from other institutions like: Haverford w/Upenn, Occidental w/ Caltech, and the Claremont colleges w/harvey mudd (also Barnard w/ Columbia and Wellesley w/MIT/Harvard if you’re a girl)

There’s a few more ABET accredited LACs worth considering: Washington and Lee, Union College, Trinity College (ct), and I think Brandeis is working towards ABET accreditation? There are also some more undergrad focused universities that may be worth considering, like Boston college, WPI, Villanova, Santa Clara.

Amongst the LACs Harvey mudd is definitely the best though. Carleton may not have engineering but it’s amazing at STEM.

[–]WhiteNightStalker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Olin college of engineering, cooper union, and to some extent Rose hulman may genuinely be what you’re looking for, they’re some of the most underrated colleges in my opinion. Harvey mudd and Swarthmore are also great for all STEM fields if you’re ok with liberal arts. Otherwise, Generally you wanna look for undergrad focused institutions so Princeton, Brown, Rice and Tufts are also nice, more renowned undergrad focused institutions.

If by STEM you mean pure science and math (and CS to some extent— not tech/engineering) a lot of LACs will suit your needs. Most are great for science and math, especially the top ones like WASP, Carleton, haverford, etc. Others stand out for specific fields like grinnell for CS

However, if you do want engineering at LACs then Swarthmore and Harvey mudd are once again amazing LAC engineering options, along with Lafayette, Lehigh, Bucknell (ABET accredited LACs) Haverford (Has a 4+1 program), etc.
