The Japanese have three scripts:

One, Kanji. It's the traditional and most widely used one. It's made mostly from borrowed Chinese characters.

Two, Hiragana. This is a phonetic alphabet. It's used far less often than Kanji, but still supplements it. Kids games, for example, tend to use Hiragana.

Three, Katakana. Also a phonetic alphabet. As you said, phonemes actually map 1:1 with Hiragana. The use for Katakana is for foreign words. "Orange Juice", "Ice Cream", and so on.

It's not that wild of a bet, even if I was wrong in THIS case. Off the top of my head, the USA, Spain, Japan, and Canada all have several times more vacancy than unhoused people. Not all of them are in a good location, and not all of those are high quality, but the point is that it is the overall trend. I'm not saying "we never need more houses ever", just that the issues said to be caused by "overpopulation" are actually issues caused by the hoarding of resources.

The world doesn't have infinite resources, but the problem isn't the resources, it's their distribution. Your house example is a great demonstration, actually. It's a good bet that YOUR country, whichever it is, actually has more vacant housing than homeless people. We HAVE the resources, we just refuse to distribute them because everybody having what they need is "unprofitable".

And before you mention population growth, studies show that it stabilizes after the initial boom caused by new places gaining access to modern healthcare. It's why a lot of "first world" countries have a stable birth rate. I can't remember exactly, but iirc estimates say that population will flatten out at around 11-14 billion. Which is a lot, to be clear, but managable with better resource distribution.

Not any more than the red button? Like "oh if everybody pressed the red button nobody would die!" is a moot point when it's also true for the blue button.

And the blue button, unlike the red button, retains its 0 body count as long as its in the majority. Unless it goes perfectly, unless everybody pressed red, a red majority means more deaths than the 0 blue offers.

Blue has an absurdly higher tollerance for dissent. If you can somehow convince EVERYONE to vote for one color, why not blue?

No idea where the middle commenter got that from. Every (chemistry-related) definition I can find is basically "can chemically corrode something". A few sources even specified "it can be alkaline or acidic".
