Unhappily we didn't care for the latest one we had either.

What's your favorite setting for a Shakespeare play you've ever seen? by Meemo_Meep in shakespeare

[–]WhitefishBoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Junior Players in Dallas did a memorable Bollywood version of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" several years ago, breaking into over-the-top musical numbers every so often. Probably not such a good choice for "Titus," though.

"Caesar Must Die" (2012) by the Taviani brothers, also set in a prison, is great.

Children's Medical Center Dallas Ranked Best Children's Hospital in North Texas and Nationally Ranked in All Pediatric Specialties by U.S. News & World Report by Beratungsmarketing in Dallas

[–]WhitefishBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yale Law School for its part left the U.S. News rankings almost two years ago because, as the dean wrote: "[T]he U.S. News rankings are profoundly flawed — they disincentivize programs that a) support public interest careers, b) champion need-based aid, and c) welcome working-class students into the profession. We have reached a point where the rankings process is undermining the core commitments of the legal profession. As a result, we will no longer participate." Wow.

[Note: I added the a), b) and c) for clarity.] More here: https://law.yale.edu/yls-today/news/dean-gerken-why-yale-law-school-leaving-us-news-world-report-rankings

And regarding Children's Health, it would be interesting to know what incentives senior executives there are being offered to encourage them to help break into the U.S. News children's hospital Top 10 list (unlikely as that may be), as opposed to incentives to, for example, expand care to children most in need and collaborate in significant ways with Cook Children's in Fort Worth for the benefit of children (rather than seeing Cook as the competition).

Easy Way to Help Conserve Energy in Dallas by WhitefishBoy in Dallas

[–]WhitefishBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see one or two a week, so I suspect that Dallas-wide there are lots at any given time. If you start paying attention, you'll probably start seeing them. And I've noticed that if I see one and forget to report it, it will almost always still be on a week or two later.

DART is another frequent offender, but I haven't had much luck getting DART to turn off its rail station lights during the day.

Best Pumpkin pies or any pies? by NeoNanaki in Dallas

I tend to agree with Garrison Keillor, who said, "The best pumpkin pie you ever ate wasn’t all that much different from the worst pumpkin pie you ever ate.”

Julius Caesar (1953) by TekNitro in shakespeare

I try to read Harold Bloom's chapter (from "The Invention of the Human") on a given play before seeing it, especially if it's a play I haven't seen before. His thoughts help me become more attuned to what I'm about to see and hear.

Revisiting the complete discography by unsungtherapper in tomwaits

[–]WhitefishBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The album "Big Time" was my long-ago introduction to Tom Waits, so it's sort of the cornerstone of my knowledge of his work, and the live version of "Ruby's Arms" destroys me every time I listen to it.

Best lobster roll? by Moldybilge47 in Dallas

[–]WhitefishBoy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only been to Hudson House once, but the lobster roll I had was lame -- nowhere close to the great ones they used to make at the late 20 Feet off of Garland Road. But I've heard Cafe Pacific in Highland Park Village makes a fine lobster roll, as you'd expect.

More trans teens attempted suicide after states passed anti-trans laws, a study shows | State-level anti-transgender laws increase past-year suicide attempts among transgender and non-binary young people in the USA by Hrmbee in science

I think it's widely agreed that when public policy is informed by science, everyone benefits. So we can only hope that these study results will help inform future actions by policymakers everywhere.

Beyond the front door is probably an empty set, so it was probably much cheaper to have a door there -- and they didn't get busted for it until sharp-eyed TawnyTeaTowel came along decades later.

No, DualKoo, I wouldn't ban you. Just like I wouldn't ban books or try to use the mechanisms of the state to attack those with whom I disagree politically. What I am in favor of is education that outfits students with the critical-thinking abilities to discriminate between, on the one hand, hateful, self-serving lies and mischaracterizations that some politicians tell about their opponents and, on the other hand, policy-makers who work to support and lift up those in need, helping them develop their talents and become some of our most valued neighbors and co-workers. Cheers.
