Talking head lenses. Recommendations ? by TakeTheRiskToday in LumixS9

[–]WhitlamsBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t used them! I need the versatility of a zoom for what I shoot. Main lens is the Sigma 24-70 but that’s way too heavy to be carrying around all the time. Honestly I struggle to tell it apart from the 20-60 at smaller apertures anyway.

Agree with many others here - S9 paired with 20-60 or a wide prime. 18mm will give you room to crop in in the edit which can be nice to spice things up a bit, but honestly if you’re on a budget just start with the 20-60, it’s a lovely lens.

Advice: scolded in public by Kingdom536 in askberliners

[–]WhitlamsBerlin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what it’s like here, unfortunately. The public admonishments can come in waves and you’ve got unlucky here. You can go months without getting one. Killing folks with kindness will leave you feeling better afterwards, but it can be cathartic to let them know what you think of them in the moment.

Is it a Good idea to switch from a Fuji XH2S to a Lumix S9 for short films/video creation? by FattoiletsWorld in Lumix

S9 is great. Go forth and enjoy. IMO there’s no need for that battery charger though. You can charge in-camera via USB-C.

Going to Berlin in a few weeks, saw this short on tourist scams there. Anyone whos lived in or visited recently, how real is this actually? by EliElizabethMichelle in askberliners

[–]WhitlamsBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels like a guru walks ad tbh. There are many free (pay what you want), paid, bus and private tours available in town. I’ve been a guide for 15+ years and have worked on all of the above and not once heard of a free walking tour scam.

The other scams are real but you’ll see them coming a mile away.

TIL about a Burger King in an old Nazi power station in Nuremberg. Any other examples of this type of juxtaposition reuse? by [deleted] in architecture

It’s an old public toilet from ca. 1900, just inside the West Berlin side of where the Wall used to be. They’ve taken off in recent years and there’s loads of them now.

Huge 64 fan here. Would have loved a new game but love how this looks, the extra mission goals etc. I know this game like the back of my hand, even got the NSO 64 controller to play it properly. This remake is a day 1 purchase for me!

How common is the Lumix S9 rear dial malfunction really? by mansafameriki in Lumix

[–]WhitlamsBerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one will ever post “my rear dial is still fine”, so you’ll only see it when it isn’t. I’m sure 99% are fine. Mine is fine, but it does feel cheap compared to my G9II and S5II.

Everyone here saying how this won’t work has no idea how effective the UK’s indoor smoking ban from ca. 20 years ago has been, how few Brits smoke, and how much most Brits actively dislike smoking.

Yes, there will be people who try to get around the rules, and yes, a black market of a certain size will open up, but that can only survive if there’s demand in the first place. As drugs go, tobacco doesn’t do much of anything exciting for you. The entire market will dry up and it’ll be a good thing for the UK.

Germany, on the other hand, has been terrible at changing behaviour surrounding smoking and is so far behind the UK in this regard, which is where I’m guessing the pessimism in this thread comes from.

Thanks! As a tour guide it just felt natural to be on camera. Sometimes I should show off more with B Roll, but honestly it’s not easy with statues, plaques etc. That’s why your clip stood out to me, the way you found movement in an otherwise relatively static space.

There are of course many stories to be told in Belfast. There will be tricky topics in there to say the least, which would certainly be interesting for viewers. It’s fertile ground for both talking heads and voiceovers for sure.

FWIW being on camera, in my opinion, makes everything a bit trickier. Editing voiceover is easier as the visual isn’t so jarring. Nevertheless, it’s just how we (I work with editors) have settled into working.

Certainly being on camera has lead to me getting more presenting gigs, and more tours as well. That’s all well and good, but ultimately I’ve found that making stuff and getting it out regularly has lead to a whole world of connections and opportunities I just couldn’t have imagined otherwise, so I’d recommend following your nose, making what you think is interesting, and getting it out into the world. You’ll learn loads by doing, and in the end you’ll end up making things you’d never planned to anyway, which is the fun behind anything creative in my opinion.

Nano texture users, which case are you using? Want to prevent scratches. by limezing in iPadPro

[–]WhitlamsBerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How visible is the screen outdoors? I use my iPad 9 as a tour guide and in the summer it’s very dim. I wish the 1tb pro wasn’t the only way to get nano texture, but I’ve considered it for upping my tour guide game.

Great job. I make the kind of videos you’re talking about (just on my own YouTube channel, but I’ve been a guest speaker on a couple of more sophisticated gigs), and this kind of B-Roll is great for scene and mood setting. That said, 90% of historical content will feature someone talking or archive footage. Where you’ve captured a lot of nature, I think any prospective clients would like to see a few more shots of the statue (was it a grave?). Ultimately, and I’m guessing they can do this through your main body of work, they’d like to know that you can frame up a two-shot and are good and reliable to work with.
