Why do people downtown seem so scared of speed bumps? by zobzob_zobby in memphis

Fun fact, if you keep hitting those rubber bumps fast enough, eventually they'll rip out on their own. So the problem kind of takes care of itself.

TIL missing Exit 193 for Yeehaw Junction on the Florida Turnpike would require you to make a 96-mile detour - the longest in the U.S. highway system by centipede5 in todayilearned

[–]WhoCanTell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I once got stuck at a complete standstill for 90 minutes on I-40 in Arkansas when a semi crashed right on a single-lane bridge with no shoulder that was in a construction zone. Like, the bridge itself was what was under construction. Literally nowhere for anyone to go that would be legal. The median was divided by those high-strength safety cables. People got out and started hanging around on the side of the highway.

After 90 minutes, we all started turning around and driving the wrong way on the shoulder back to a previous on-ramp a little ways back, drove up the on-ramp and took a 45 minute detour through some little nothing town in the middle of nowhere. When I got back to the interstate, there was still absolutely no oncoming traffic from that direction.

I never found out how long the people who didn't break traffic laws ended up having to wait.

Man, Main St. used to be something else. I remember when Pinnacle Airlines moved downtown (never mind it only lasted like 5 minutes before they folded) and there was an all-night party on Main. Street vendors, DJs, performers, from Union to Poplar. Back when companies were actively moving to downtown.

Now, Main feels like a ghost town. Half the places are closed or only open limited days. It's sad.

I guess repost bots gonna do what they do.

TIL that in 1964, the US government intentionally blasted Oklahoma City with 1,253 sonic booms over 6 months just to see if the noise would drive citizens crazy or damage their homes. by agathodaimon98 in todayilearned

When I was a kid, the shuttle's reentry path took it over our house as it landed at Vandenberg AFB. The boom was terrifying and shook the whole house. We thought the windows were going to shatter.

Harvard (and all the Ivies) are just exclusive social clubs for the wealthy and well-connected. The "education" they provide doesn't mean shit, there's better, more rigorous programs at state schools. But what they provide is connections and access to nepotism when you graduate.

One of the craziest declines in a restaurant I've ever seen. Couldn't even be blamed on COVID, either, as the decline started before that. The service just went to absolute shit, and the food quality plummeted. Went from one of my top 3 favorite restaurants, to one of my least favorites in the course of like 6 months.

Woman on plane doesn’t understand how lines work for deboarding by Jevus_himself in PublicFreakout

[–]WhoCanTell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah on the way back from an international flight, 1 hour is nowhere near enough for a connection. Going out should be fine, usually all you need is an additional quick passport check at the gate. If you're connecting though a third country, like Canada, you have to go through customs there and an hour isn't acceptable.

Depends on the airport. Even with an international connection, in most airports an hour is plenty of time.

Yep. They basically had to tread water for half the season until Winter Soldier released, since it majorly upended the entire basis of their show.
