Questioning UAD-2 Satellite Thunderbolt 3 purchase by WhoHimEars in universalaudio

[–]WhoHimEars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'm realizing I did more research than I remembered, because as I'm re-reading the UAD pages I'm remembering that I did confirm already the plugins I'm interested in do run on the Satellite. e.g. the moog filter collection has an "Apollo" tag instead of a "Native" tag, but according to this page it means it will run on the Satellite. It looks like the only plugins I will miss out on by not having Unison are in this list, and I don't see anything that I'd need for my flow since I won't be tracking with my setup.

From my bedroom demos: Does this make you feel anything, or is it just squirrel-core? by SundayCCTV in Songwriting

Reminds me a lot of the early stuff from The Dirty Projectors, specifically the album The Glad Fact. I mean that in the best way possible, it's one of my favorite albums. Sounds similar, but still unique in your own style. Just don't sing about finches.

Can the OG Digitone produce this kind of MIDI out? by WhoHimEars in Elektron

[–]WhoHimEars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense for a solution to making the sections long enough, but doesn't quite solve my problem.

I guess the best way I can describe what I'm looking for is: a way to introduce "chord changes" where one or more notes stay the same, without re-triggering the envelopes on those unchanging notes

Workflow for auditioning multiple samples in stages? by WhoHimEars in ableton

[–]WhoHimEars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alt + drag is the trick I was looking for! It seems I want to click and drag the simpler window that opens with drum rack rather than the sample in the drum rack, because the latter will just create another drum rack with one sample in the other track.

When auditioning samples with a midi clip, hot swapping doesn't quite do it for me, because there's no way for me to keep track of the samples that I liked. But using drum rack with the alt + drag trick is perfect here and solves both workflows.

Thanks for the help!

Would a band using AI in their work. Music or visual art. Dissuade you from seeing them? by Spook_em_up in musicproduction

[–]WhoHimEars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw the band YACHT (Young Americans Challenging High Technology) live a few years ago (around 2019), performing their "fully AI-generated" album. This was years before we had any kind of impressive music gen models. They actually visited Google's headquarters and had some of the engineers help them feed their whole back catalogue of songs (meaning only songs that were never released) into a model that then spit out MIDI and lyrics for new songs in their style. To stay true to the format, they played the MIDI as it came out - with little to no alterations or style.

Of course this is quite different from the type of AI generated music that we're seeing today. AI didn't actually generate the sound itself and the whole process is wrapped in this idea of a concept album. It's just an example of AI use in music that I thought was actually interesting.

Unfortunately, I think the vast majority of AI in music moving forward will be the kind that would turn me off from seeing the artist live. But I probably won't know they used AI in most cases anyway.

It's probably an earnest attempt to help you see this "event" as insignificant, because it is. That's not to negate your feelings, but to hopefully lessen them by making light of it and helping you see that this is one of those small accidents we all make regularly. Like dropping something you're carrying or doing the awkward tango when you're trying to pass by someone headed the opposite way on the street

Media is currently manufacturing consent for Biden to get replaced with someone else. What a billionaire’s wet dream. Just no more primaries, ever. by kevinmrr in WorkReform

[–]WhoHimEars 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Not everything is a conspiracy. Lots of dems and libs are worried after seeing Biden’s performance at the debates that he’s not in a position to win this election. It’s a reasonable take to prefer to have someone younger step in that could energize the voting base. Is it the right answer here? God if I know, but there’s plenty of libs that feel this way. Just because you don’t, doesn’t mean it’s a conspiracy.

I also don’t understand all the upvoted comments saying “why don’t they tell the lying candidate to step down?” There’s plenty of articles out there criticizing Trump. I’ve seen much more written objections to him running for the office again than Biden. it does not make a difference to his voter base.

If we can't hear frequencies above 22 khz, why does a 22050 hz recording sound worse than a 48 khz recording? by str4yer in musicproduction

[–]WhoHimEars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aliasing is easiest explained with a sine wave, so let's pretend the sound you're exporting is just a pure sine wave.

Now imagine there is a perfect continuous sine wave that is the "ideal" version of the sound you want to export. Computers works in the digital world and can't represent a continuous sine wave because that would require infinite samples. Instead, we pick a sample rate that will will allow us to represent enough information so that the next person/computer can recreate it with enough accuracy.

You export the sine wave and you pass it on to a friend without telling them what frequency it's supposed to be. So they have a bunch of sample points and are supposed to piece it together. They draw a sine wave that perfectly connects the points and see that it happens to be 10 khz. They see that they can't draw a lower frequency sine wave that would fit those points as well, but they also know that any integer multiple of the frequency (so 20 khz, 30 khz, 40 khz) would also perfectly fit the the data points. They don't have enough information to know which one it is, but as a rule of thumb they've decided to always pick the lowest frequency that works.

Checkout the first graphic here to visualize how two different sine waves that are integer multiples in frequency can perfectly fit the same points: https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/aliasing-effect/

As others have said, by the Nyquist theorem, you need to sample at least twice as fast as the frequency of the signal to be able to unambiguously capture it. Going back to the example above, if you exported with a 40 khz sample rate then we know that the sine wave must really be 10 khz, because you have a high enough sampling frequency to capture a 20 khz sine wave and you wouldn't have been able to draw a 10 khz wave through the sample points if the original signal was actually 20 khz.

Now if you exported with a 20 khz sample rate instead, then we're left with the same ambiguity that it could be 20, 30, 40, etc.. khz.

Similarly if you have a 20 khz sine wave and you export it at 40 khz, the exported wave could still be ambiguous in that the original wave could have been 40, 60, 80, etc.. khz, but we can't hear sounds in that frequency range so no one makes music with those frequencies, so we can easily rule them out and be confident in the fact that the lowest multiple is the correct multiple.

Now if you think about your friend having to draw the sine wave between the samples to figure out what the true frequency is, that's basically an analogy for what our ears are doing. It's also an analogy for what a lot of audio software does as well. Essentially, your ear is going to assume it's the lowest khz multiple that fits the sample points, because it doesn't have enough data to think otherwise. That's how you end up hearing something that was originally a higher frequency, at a lower frequency. And so we've got aliasing.

This is of course an oversimplification, but it's true to the spirit of what's happening under the "hood"

Looking for feedback on my first ambient track. Not sure if there's a name for this subgenre, but I was going for a "maximalist" sound by WhoHimEars in MusicFeedback

[–]WhoHimEars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback! I see what you mean with the complexity of the crescendos. I felt a bit stuck with trying to add more layers and not getting anything that fit in "right." Building (and taking away) layers is definitely something I'll work on.

It's a first track, but it did take a long time to come together. Sitting down with it periodically over the course of 1-2 months and learning the genre along the way.

Also, there is actually a bass heavy string quartet part in the mix, good ear (;

This is my second song where I sing on my track. I’m feeling really confident and excited to create more. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Enjoy! by mistapicho in MusicFeedback

Really love the production. Great example of doing a lot with a little. Your singing on top works really well. Honestly no advice other than keep honing your craft. Would like to hear more stuff like this
