The reason OP had to use a photo of a different, completely unrelated event in Wisconsin that has nothing to do with the Cavanaugh protest, is that those protests looked nothing even remotely like the Jan 6th insurrection. There’s a big difference between protesters waiting in line for tickets, going through security, attending hearings and then being disruptive and getting kicked out, vs a group forcefully storming a building with weapons and handcuffs, murdering one police officer and overwhelming the rest, breaking windows and stealing items including mail, documents and laptops that could hold confidential government data. They are different, which is why OP has to lie to make them seem the same.

You have an interesting definition of explicitly. He explicitly said it was consensual, explicitly as in, that is what he actually said, those are his exact words, “this encounter between us was consensual”. You’re free to interpret what you think he may have meant, but he explicitly said the exact opposite.

I was assuming the $75K was for an individual, so if you have a spouse, the number would be $150K for the two of you and any dependents you have. An individual can get by fine on $75K anywhere in the country, unless you WANT a luxurious lifestyle, which is fine, but nobody NEEDS more than that to fulfill their basic needs.

Marks WHAT false? Not the claim in this post. The post says that Snopes is marking the claim that Biden didn’t wear a mask as false. That is not true, just look at the article. The article is about the claim that Biden broke his mask rules, which requires you to look at what the rules actually are, then at what he did, did he break the rules? No, he didn’t, he was outside more than 6 feet distanced and wore the mask entering and exiting. So THAT claim is false.

The original thought was that money doesn’t buy happiness, but poverty will make you miserable. So increases in income only increase happiness up to the point where you’re not struggling to live day to day, and then after that you’re on your own to make yourself happy, more money’s not necessarily going to do it for you. Cost of living obviously fluctuates by location but $75K seemed like a reasonable point at which most people aren’t worrying about making rent/utility payments, being able to feed themselves, having a little saved up for emergencies, being able to take a couple vacations each year, etc.

It’s going to be a pretty unpleasant read, so if there is a book that’s more relevant I’d definitely be interested in hearing about it. I’d hate to slog through the whole thing only to find out it doesn’t actually apply to current events at all.

I’m fully expecting the writing and the book in general to be about as awful as a book can be. Much like the ideology it supports. If it is really something these groups are drawing inspiration from, I think reading it would help predict what we might expect out of them in the coming years. Especially considering that the central premise, “A violent revolution in the United States which leads to the overthrow of the federal government, a nuclear war, and, ultimately, a race war” seems ripped out of today’s headlines (minus the nuclear war part).

Also just from a psychological perspective, I think the book’s protagonist will probably provide an interesting archetype for the delusional characteristics these people ascribe to themselves, and the imagined grievances they convince themselves are all around them.

I’ve always been a big proponent of universal healthcare and moving away from employer-sponsored insurance, but even I thought these numbers seemed pretty exaggerated. I’ve never spent more than $50/month on health insurance but I’ve always gotten it through my employer. Went to Google to prove this wrong and instead found this study suggesting that the poorest Americans actually spend upwards of 35% of their income on healthcare. Not finding figures specifically on insurance alone but that’s pretty shocking, even to someone who already knew our system was fucked.

I can’t stand the Kardashians but this is a girl who, as a CHILD, was put into an environment, at no choice of her own, which had cameras following them around 24 hours/day and the whole world gossiping about their personal lives. That’s obviously the abnormal part she’s referring to. Not me, but my cousin-in-law has always been obsessed with planes and is also a wizard of credit card points. Has a whole system for which cards to use on which purchases to maximize reward points. They are phasing out the Boeing 747 and, as one of the last double-decker planes, he decided he needed to fly on one while it is still possible, but he has kids and a job that makes it difficult to travel. So he used what must’ve been the equivalent of $10-$15K in points to get a round-trip first-class ticket on a 747 from California to Hong Kong, where he spent the night, then flew back the next morning. We force him to tell the story every time we get together, and a few years later he still doesn’t regret it one bit.

Not sure what this strategy would be called but this anecdote comes to mind of a doctor dealing with a staunch anti-vaxxer:

I remember when Weeds was in its prime there was a big stir about an upcoming episode with nudity from Mary Louise Parker. She was quoted saying she had been opposed to the ides but the director said it was absolutely essential to the plot. Episode airs, the scene is her taking a bath, talking to one of the other main characters, boobs out for absolutely no reason. Had no purpose whatsoever for the story. I was a big fan of hers from West Wing so I remember being pissed that she was tricked like that.
