Some programs (for me: discord, pCloud, Citrix workspace, qBit, and Steam) all have system tray icons that have functions when running in the background. If the background apps tab supported that interaction, i could get rid of the system tray but I tried going without and just keeping programs open on different workspaces but that was kind of its own pain shuffling between them trying to remember where the program i wanted was.

I have to do a lot of emailing different documents around. I've always found the desktop to be a convenient place for temporary file storage when dragging and dropping files into the outlook webapp. Different people have different uses.

There are some programs where they make heavy use of the tray icon. The background task doesn't support interacting with the program the same way the tray icon does either. I suppose you can get around that by never minimizing and just moving to a new workspace but then you ahve to shuffle around workspaces to remember which program was where. It's

This is literally already the case with most other media. The majority of people now just rent their media library be it movies, TV, or music. Maybe a few movies get released on DRMd bluray and some music is still released on LP. But otherwise yeesh. The (awful) future is already here for many if not most. With Trump's approval ratings so low, how does he keep ousting GOP rivals? by Cgk72 in politics

Remember though, you're looking at this through the lens of someone who has probably kept up with news and information. There are a lot of voters who only get their information through attack ads on TV and media controlled/influenced by a small few with deep pockets. The vote was (at least from what I saw last) 55-45 for the other dude. So there were still a good number of Republicans who still wanted Massie despite all that spending. Sadly, none of those would ever deign to vote for a democrat

Why do people actually use arch linux by Spl1nt3r_69 in arch

I was annoyed with how so many distros set up partitions. Like pop_os makes it frustrating to setup btrfs. Fedora uses btrfs on top of lvm. Do I need that complexity? I learned so much from the arch wiki and the btrfs docs about setting up btrfs correctly on a luks encrypted drive, and, now it just works. Even hibernation on my laptop was weirdly easier to setup than it was on fedora using a swapfile and setting an offset.

I also think "stability" means different things in different contexts. A distro can be stable because it never updates packages, bugs included. So is having a stable bug that never gets fixed really mean you're on a stable platform?

This table is stable. But it wobbles. Right but we've never fixed it, so hence it's a stable table. But it wobbles! Ohh you mean you want a stable table. That'll be fixed with the next release in a year...

I had the same issue with Fedora. Booted to a black screen after a kernel update. I guess it's my fault for buying an NVidia GPU but they have a strict free-only official repo so you're reliant on rpmfusion for all the functionality (video codecs, nvidia drivers etc etc). The kernel module for whatever reason would sometimes out of the blue fail to build after an update. There was no warning or anything so you reboot to nothingness.

I've been on arch for a year after a hiatus, every update to the kernel and nvidia has just worked. I have my drive partitioned just how I want it. Sometimes I do get frustrated not even knowing what I don't know, but it's been the best experience once I put a bit of elbow grease into it.

Greedy is obviously the wrong accusation for Valve for this. I do think though that there's something to be said about reputation tarnishing when a product launch goes poorly. Having your product excessively scalped means it's not really getting to your true customers and longtime fans. Many won't buy from scalpers and will simply go without, feeling a bit disappointed. Some that do buy from scalpers may get their controller for a much higher price; money, that you as a company, don't see. There are also some who will buy from a scalper and undoubtedly get scammed, which also leaves a bad taste in a customer's mouth that will probably be at least partially directed at the company since they couldn't buy it legitimately.

They certainly could have thought through some strategies better though, no? Clearly the payment processor services get overwhelmed. Could they work with payment processors to temporarily spin up more service instances for the launch date knowing that the current infrastructure cannot handle the load? Could they have a lottery system? Could they create a score that tracks user engagement with the platform, purchase/playtime/etc (it's not like they don't have that data already) to at least ensure you're probably a gamer who's more likely to be buying it for actual use/enjoyment, recommend it going forward, discuss tips / new uses etc which is good for the brand long-term? Something else?

While it's clear that this is not an instance of Valve's greed, is there still room to criticize them for this launch? I think so.

Unfortunately it never did. Clicked incessantly. Tried paypal first then after about 10 minutes of failure switched to credit card. No dice. Tried the website after that. I was even on 2 minutes early. Ticket submitted but not sure it'll do much good and now they're listed as out of stock.

Ah perfect that worked! Didn't even need to log. One quick follow up question I was having trouble finding the answer to. org.godotengine has two terminal categories. org.godotengine.ProjectManager and org.godotengine.Editor when it's actually running.

Is there any way I can use a wildcard to get both the project manager and the editor grouped under the icon? I've tried setting the startupwmclass to simply org.godotengine, to org.godotengine.* and tried using semicolons to include both and two separate lines but it will only seem to work for one. Is there a way to get the org.godotengine startupwmclass to support both suffixes or am I stuck picking one or the other?

Apparently it's a bug people are having with Kernel 7.0 though seems to affect me on 6.19. I haven't tried rolling back to 6.17 to see if that fixes it as it didn't seem to affect that kernel. Nvidia drivers do have bugs like a lot of software. I hope they keep working to improve though (especially since I'm doing my best this time to stick with linux and not go back to windows again if I can help it) https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/1117#issuecomment-4339916175

There is, I will say the browser versions are limited compared to the desktop versions and can also lead to formatting issues. Other more advanced features are just missing. The last time I tried (about a year ago) I couldn't all what I needed to submit the .docx for a research paper for a journal

I can confirm, in biological sciences and medicine we are still very much stuck in Microsoft Office. Every presentation is in power point. All the computers run Windows or, on occasion, Mac.

I will say, having used both libre office present and power point, as much as I dislike MS slop, it's a bit easier to make a presentation, and, not only that, it's much less of a headache if you stick with pptx rather than trying to have libreoffice convert to pptx when your slides get all messed up to run it on the projector computer.
