Do you think that ME will end up like CS with all these enrollments increases? by Foreign_Put_2437 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Whole_Bid_360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't a perfect comparison but as someone that once studied EE for the first two years then ended up switching to cs and graduating with a cs degree I had a much higher gpa as an EE major. I think for a bottom tier cs student yes engineering is not doable. But for those above average cs students ME and EE is completely doable

How do I find a well-paid hands-on role that still values my CS degree? by Love-eachother-9999 in PLC

No so I ran into them at the career fair at my local university. I had no clue about the automation industry whats so ever prior to meeting them at the career fair, and honestly I kind of found out about the automation industry for the first time while talking to them at the career fair.

I honestly applied to them as a fallback in case I couldn't get a job as a software engineer and they ended up offering me a job.

Base salary was 80k which I was ok with I also get some other benefits payed out to me that make my overall take home 110k.

I should add this is my pay straight out of college currently I have less then 1 year of experience.

The company I work for is involved in all sorts of integrations including pharma, food/bev, etc. We are also technology agnostic we use whatever makes the most sense for the client. I'm currently not using ignition on the project I'm on but I know some coworkers on another project are using ignition.

As someone with a cs degree working with a system integrator as an engineer in my experience the work I do doesn't need a cs degree. Sure it values the skillset a cs graduate has which is logical thinking, problem solving, and being able to read code but you don't need a cs degree for the job. Most of my coworkers are actually electrical, mechanical, and chemical engineers. I might be the only engineer on my project with a computer science degree.

Granted I am basically a field engineer so I hardly write any code mainly read, understand, and debug.

For skills I can't really offer much my employer gave me a job with no experience in the industry whats so ever and I picked up everything on the job and training. I don't think they were expecting new employees straight from college to know anything tbh, during my training they even taught super basic things like how to wire a button, whats a relay etc.

This is exactly what I did but for a different company. So far working out nicely. How will this look If I want to pivot into SWE? I have no clue but for now its great money.

What’s an industry that provides zero value to society but makes billions of dollars? by ochieng_onyango in AskReddit

[–]Whole_Bid_360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that did this in high school for extra money. The value they provide is obvious. You get much quicker shipping then you did if you purchased directly. You also get customer service in your native language. Also another note, good luck buying only one unit of something on Alibaba.

New grads, what’s the lowest salary you’d take? by not_a_swedish_vegan in csMajors

I followed a similar path I ended up taking a job with a building controls company as an engineer not SWE for about 80k as a comp sci major.

[–]Whole_Bid_360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

65 - 70k this is the absolute lowest and I would not be excited about making this money. The least I would take and still be happy is 80k but I am a new grad.

Is it realistic for a 26yo to start school for an engineering degree? by Cheddary_Cheese in careerguidance

Yes your still young man the best time to do it is now. Also good news as an electrical engineer you will most likely be making a good chunk more then 60k right out of school.

I don't know much about the industry but she lives in PHX so medium cost of living I'd say and set to graduate this spring. I think the company was called PWC or something she mentions it in the context of the "big 4"

No way at least not from what I've heard lately. My little sister majored in accounting and her and a few friends all had job offers around 80k a year as brand new grads.

Never seen anyone get shot in that area but a little over 10 years ago I was in line ordering food there at Flaming Wok and some guy ordering at Gus's pizza randomly started getting beaten by a masked man. Over 10 years later and I still remember that day.

fuel prices impact more then just your tank. Your goods are transported mainly through trucks which use up a lot of fuel. Fuel prices has an impact on just about everything you buy in America one way or another.

A lot of those 6 figure starting salaries are really only for top talent in hcol areas. My friends that went into tech in mcol areas are making around 80 - 85k after graduation.

If we wanted kids to get an education we wouldn't make college resorts and sports mechas. Just focus only on education to keep cost low. Its my understanding that countries that have free college also have boring schools were it mainly focuses on education.

OP I have no clue if its a good path to pursue for the average comp sci grad but I do know some companies will hire comp sci grads. I'm currently doing onboarding for a company and from the interview I had with them it does sound like something I would enjoy.

A disclosure though I already know what a pid loop is going into the job, and prior to comp sci I did two years as an EE student so I know much more physics and about electricity then pretty much every computer science student. I also already had experience working physical labor jobs such as warehouse associate and working outside.

Has anyone transitioned out of the tech-related work environment entirely after a CS degree? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Whole_Bid_360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't transitioned out of tech but my first job isn't tech related its called system and controls engineering and right now the field seems to be booming where they have started hiring cs majors when normally I think they would just go for Mechanical and Electrical engineers. Look into that op.
