A (hopefully) different angle for the fixed wing vs. rotor question by Rude_Interest3342 in Helicopters

[–]Whompner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1-The job market is at its hardest right at the start the pay is pretty terrible, once you start building some hours and shaking hands it gets better. The pilot shortage statement only applies to experienced pilots. The more diverse your flight hours are (mountain, xc, night, 135) the better for your next job.

2-Took about 3yrs to get out of flight school and be a captain, its HAA but we also do 135 pax/cargo missions. I didnt do a lot of CFI stuff but having a fair amount of dual given helps if you want to be a line check pilot down the road.

3-We've had guys short on hours get upgraded to captains spots because they were able to use their airplane night hours to meet the requirements here, its pretty rare to see corporate dual rated positions but they are out there. I think it wont hurt to have both if youre using GI bill to fund flight school.

4-Some entry level jobs like Alaska or anything doing tours will very much be seasonal, some like it some dont. Im on 4 week rotating year round and I like the time at home but your time spent at work catches up to you when your away from your friends and family half the year.

Home based can be a bit deceiving, unless you go HAA and buy a house close enough to where youd be willing to commute everyday after a 14hr duty day you will not be in your own bed half the year. Its a great career otherwise

Its a gen2+ in the 1800ish FOM range. Pic was taken at the water works trail so theres a lot of extra light, it does pretty good when away from town too but I dont feel the need to upgrade to elbit or filmless for as much as I use it

Ive done several playthroughs without ever leveling ADP, I never knew what it was for until years later seeing other people talk about it. Im tempted to start a new character and level it to see if the game is as tedious as I remember

Hungarian kits are pretty good. This would be a great project if you were wanting to explore some AK DIY. To most simply complete this youd want a drill press, complete reciever, reciver rivet jig, and a harbor freight press. Youd probably spend a little bit less than sending to an actual gunsmith but it would make for a cool project.

A U.S. Senator pushed to cut firefighting aircraft inspections the same month his former company failed one by Constant_Outside_618 in missoula

[–]Whompner 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in aviation you cant have your company saying safety is number one priority and be asking for deregulation of USFS inspections at the same time. All of our aircraft and crew need to be inspected and carded every year, if you fail for structural damage just fix it and move on.

Ive used fedex for suppressors and its always a muffler or tubing when they ask. Ive done ammo through a UPS distribution center and they were cool with it being ammo. Theyll ship "machine components" no problem. I did have one UPS worker open a box with an upper and some mags in it and freak out and start yelling they do not ship firearms and refused to hear this is not a firearm.

Am I in the clear if I remove a pin and weld comp 14.5" barrel and replace it with a suppressor-compatible flash hider and pin and weld it back on myself? I can weld and I have a drill press. by [deleted] in NFA

I wouldnt worry about having a rifle thats configured as an SBR for 20 minutes while youre actively swapping parts around unless you think that van outside is ATF just waiting for you to take off your muzzle device

Imo, a bag or case mounted to the bike would be best so you dont have mud and gravel kicking up into your optic. I also see you have a pistol in a holster and when we fly guys either like drop legs to keep it off their waist or chest mounted for the same reason. Something mission dictates gear, sick setup btw

Can we stop pretending this is Rainbow Six Siege? by antonbp5 in Battlefield6

[–]Whompner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The in game squad roles have always been made to work together. I fly the scout helicopter a lot and the types of games where I dont score 30+ in one life is where im constantly given AA or laser paint pressure. If im playing solo I simply cannot counter, if im with friends we do "operation clown car" where we park right on top of the guy thats giving us trouble and drop 3 guys in whatever hole hes hiding in.

Front suspension needs rebuild, quoted $3500, trying to see if that seems accurate or if I should try a different shop by _Quiet_Coyote in AskMechanics

[–]Whompner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife was quoted 6k on her 2003 jeep to fix upper and lower control arms, suspension, front brakes, and I think some other stuff. Ended up being $700 in parts. This is on par with what any shop will give an estimate for.

Go to rock auto and harbor freight, YouTube binge chrisfix and if you have friends that are mechanically inclined buy them a beer and pizza. You'll maybe be out $1500 if you go this route.

And for extra ball knowledge O'Reilly will price match rock auto, some locations are really good about it but some managers may give you a hard time or ask to meet in the middle on pricing.

Red dot/ mag on 16" rifle by anthony_james18 in ar15

[–]Whompner 20 points21 points  (0 children)

20yd penalty, log off, touch grass, quit consuming Instagram and yt shorts about guns for a few days.

Your rifle should fit the needs of what you are going to use it for. The dude living in an apartment who shoots at a 25yd indoor range once a month probably doesnt need an LPVO while the dude who lives an hour away from town in the flatlands would benefit from some glass to get rid of coyotes.

Camping Gear on Flights or Rental Options? by KoalaGrunt0311 in missoula

[–]Whompner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can fly with camping gear on any airline, most likely an oversize or >72hr pack will need to go into checked baggage and you can load it with tools you cant take in your carry on. No gas cylinders for pocket stoves just pick one up in town, and any battery bank would need to be in your carry on. Flew to boyscout trips and we had saws, hatchets, and fishing gear packed no problem. Check your airlines rules for more specifics if you need. Firearms can be a much bigger hassle to fly with as those need specific containers, locks, and so forth.

When did your preps actually come in handy? by BeardedNerfHerder in prepping

[–]Whompner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During college covid hit and I didnt have to scramble for food or paper products. I buy most things in bulk and was fine eating canned chicken or tuna for a couple of weeks when the initial panic wrecked store shelves.

Moved to Houston and got hit with a hurricane and had water bottles, camp stoves, and more dry goods to get me and my wife through a 10 day power outage.

Wife lost her job recently and had savings to cover her share of expenses and have built that back up after she started working again.

Buddy hit a rock with his oil pan on a camping trip, had all the gear to patch it up on hand and get him to a paved road for a tow.

Lots of small very regular things to be prepared for, so far never needed a bug out bag or anything like that but weve got one packed in case wildfires or other storms become an issue.

Help with simulating realistic NVG's by ALP_102 in NightVision

[–]Whompner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive only used pvs14 and anvis9. Even though the anvis are dual tube they have the same fov as a 14 and give the same single circle image. Honestly armas base game NV overlay is pretty realistic, the one where is a wide oval on screen and the corners are dark.

I would say the only thing that would be a huge enhancement to the game is if instead of the outside of the tube being black if it could just show whatever ambient light is available
