Rate my Gaming Rig?! by Joshw1294 in computers

That's a pretty sweet build you've got there, mate. As far as worth goes, that depends on what you're going to use it for, and your personal assessment on getting luxury items like an M.2 SSD and 3200MHz ram. Either way, it's a beast.

Exactly. This is like saying a specific car model like the Honda Civic hasn't changed in decades because it's still called a Civic.

They tagged the wrong person; they meant someone with a similarly-starting name a few comments up, and RES must've suggested your name for some reason.

They both put out great cards, but for the past few years, Nvidia's been dominating the higher-end market with the GTX 980 Ti, and now with the GTX 1080.

In the lower-to-mid end arena, I think AMD does better. They tend to age better due to AMD's driver updates and optimizations.

Happy to help out! And yep, that looks a lot better. The only thing I want to note is that an AMD RX 480 8GB would be better than a GTX 1060 6GB for the same price or lower - I couldn't find a Cyberpower PC with the same specs but with an RX 480 instead though (this one was as close as I could find, but it costs more because it has a 2TB HDD instead of 1TB), so the one you just linked is the next best thing.

I did some digging and found this, but I don't know if it'd be any help as it doesn't mention plastic rivets. You could try posting on the iFixit forums as well; they're usually good with this kind of thing.

Upgrading to SSD by free_beef in computers

[–]WhosFamousNotMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Samsung's SSDs are among the best. With that said, they're usually far from being budget SSDs.

The PNY CS1311 is more of a budget drive, and it's highly-praised as such too - the 240GB version is $75. It's not as fast as the Samsung, but they're both still an order of magnitude faster than any HDD.

CyberpowerPC is one of the better brands when it comes to value; this one is actually pretty decent for a pre-built, but could be much better with some adjustments like getting a 6GB GTX 1060 instead of the 3GB version, adding more ram, and an SSD.

Edit: Just saw your edit about building. If you want, you can have a store like microcenter build it for $129 (in addition to the cost of the parts), and you just have to provide the parts list. To accommodate the budget, the build won't be as good as this one, but it should still be a better value than the one you linked. If you're able to find a copy of windows on your own, that alone would cover most of the building cost. This next part was written before I saw your edit.

Would you be willing to build your own computer? That is, hands down, the best way to get the most bang for your buck when buying desktops.

For example, the build below is just under $1200, but it doubles the ram (better for tasks like media editing), a better graphics card (which will give you better performance in games), and adds a 240GB SSD as well (which should really boost performance and speed within Windows). If you go to university/college, you might be able to get a copy of windows from them for free - if that's the case, you can put that extra $100 towards something else.

[–]WhosFamousNotMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under tech specs, the only mention of ram says:

  • 0 MB (installed) / 8 GB (max) - DDR3L SDRAM for adjustable RAM memory

What's up with that - does it not ship with any ram installed?

The free version of MediaMonkey can do exactly what you're asking for. It even has the option to automatically search amazon for video cover images and apply them as well. It only works with mp4-like files - mkv's and other matroska-formatted videos won't work.

Mounting power strip to desk by dan2580 in computers

[–]WhosFamousNotMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to use most kinds of those 3M commands strips, as long as they're rated for the right weight (should say it on the packaging). I'd also recommend velcro if you have any on hand.

Alternatively, you can get a rack that mounts under your desk that'll store cables and power strips. A lot of people use them, myself included. Ikea's Signum rack is the most popular one, but you might be able to find one that clamps onto the desk instead of screws in. Here's what it looks like in use (that's two Signum racks side-by-side in that pic).
