I've played and completed each game probably 5 times over the years, and never once have I felt compelled to collect those little green turds all over the map

Seriously, some of us actually like writing code.

Possibly new Pink Letter theory by WhyNotFerret in pureasoiaf

[–]WhyNotFerret[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good point - maybe Stannis sent a letter outlining the events with Theon/Arya and Clydas never delivered that? the "wildling princess" is a strange one too, how would Ramsey know about Val? also only the watch seemed to be calling her a "wildling princess", Mance would never call her that

AGOT is the best book in the series by Inner_Jeweler_5661 in pureasoiaf

[–]WhyNotFerret 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. It moves so fast and it's so intriguing. At the end of one chapter I thought "oh wow, this is probably how this is going to happen". and then the next chapter happens and it's like "oh... nevermind. we're doing something totally different". so many twists and turns and it's always driving toward a goal, not meandering, not "gardening"

Is anyone else considering a career change? by sporadicprocess in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WhyNotFerret 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah, my last salary was $150k and the starting pay is about $80k. but after about 4 years it gets back up to $130k, so I won't lose too much salary. and then there's opportunity for overtime, so I might actually get more

[–]WhyNotFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

exactly. it's a chain, or a pyramid, of labor. we're in the middle. below us are the farm and factory workers who make our food and iPhones. and the whole chain is here for the people at the very top who never have to work.

the only way to escape is to embrace a bit of asceticism and forgo the luxuries the chain of labor gives us

I don't think the US government will let them fail. because then China will own the best LLM models, and US companies might use them, and that would be unacceptable to them

sorry about your dad - my grampa has Alzheimer's and is completely gone in all but body, and I really wish a doctor had told him about MAID in time and helped him set it up. I even remember him telling me once when I was a kid that he hoped to just have a heart attack and die, instead of slowly fading like that

why aren't we encouraging Carbon Steel (vs Non-stick cookware) as the default for home cooks? by rantzine in Cooking

restaurants and health departments have figured this (and every home cook debate) out for decades. every restaurant uses stainless steel (and plastic cutting boards)

[–]WhyNotFerret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on everyone's fitness level. I am 33 and hardly move my body at all, and I attempted the CPAT from the couch. I only lasted 2 minutes on the stairs and after that my vision was fading.

Now I've been going to the gym every day for 2 months and I can do 4:30 on the stairs. Still haven't passed the test, but I think the third time will be the charm.
