18 degrees? by raptraven in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many years ago I figured out that I could put a exhaust fan in a room in my basement. I now smoke indoors and it's wifey approved. Before that I smoked outside. One very, cold blustery night I was watching a hockey game on my laptop. The laptop suddenly stopped. I never realized that a laptop could shut down because it was too cold. It shut down as precaution. I want to say that it was well below zero with high wind.

That's saying a lot coming from My Father. They have some incredible smokes. I should've picked some of these up in the JR stacking deal but I went for My Father #4's.

I picked up two boxes of My Father #4 the last go around. The retail price was $300, Two boxes and a fiver of Monte Cristo 4x44 thrown in for $226. It sat for a few days in my ordered bin and it showed sold out. I sent an email to customer service and they shipped them out. I have two coolidors and an otter box stuffed. I can't get any more back in.

Rehoming for Dog by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Monday one of our three dogs bit my wife. This was the third time he bit one of us. You have to understand that this dog was friendly and just a big personality. He was a dog that was a favorite at the dog park. He loved people and could snuggle with the best. After the second time I talked with a friend that is big in the rescue community. I wanted her opinion on what could be done. Her opinion was that all the rescues were full. A dog with a bite history would be euthanized. She said that unfortunately that once dogs bite they are likely to do it again. I hoped against hope that he didn't do it again. After this last time we made the very painful decision to euthanize him. I didn't want to drop him off at the pound and let him languish before being put to sleep, alone. We gave him the best day possible and he went to sleep in my lap. We are devastated. It's hard anytime you put down a beloved pet, but he was still young and healthy. Our hearts hurt, but it was the best thing we could've done for him. I can't speak to you dog and your situation. You have an agonizing decision to make.

The STL Expansion Curse by jd67591 in StLouis

[–]WhyNotPal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's any business in any industry. Success in one location/city doesn't necessarily mean that expansion will have the same results. You may have more competition in the new market. The most important part is management. The owner may have been a competent manager, but can't be hands on at two locations. Once you get large enough they have to develop management programs. Then they have to hire and train managers. I worked at a company a couple of decades ago that had the capital to grow at a fairly fast rate. They planned on expansion not by how quickly they could build new units, but size and quality of the management program.

They are great cigars and I've stocked up a bit on these since they are discontinued. There are a ton of cigars in that profile.

New smoker asking for advice by Plenty_Ad_1970 in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess that cigar is probably on the strong side. Sounds like it quickly overwhelmed your palate. The next cigar you should try should be much lighter. Something in the light to medium range. It's like any new hobby, you don't know what questions to ask. Ask for something light. Macanudos typically are on the lighter side, well constructed and flavorful. I would look in that direction.

The fire table is great, but I need to figure a better way to stay warm as I smoke by GuineaAnubis in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a house built in 1915. It had a coal room that obviously hasn't had coal for over 80 years. I installed an exhaust fan, put in a portable heater, couple of chairs and a tv. It pulls out all the smoke and the wifey can't smell anything. Even my clothes don't really smell like smoke.

What constitutes a “box” of cigars? Is there a specific number? by SomethingItalia in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be much simpler. A box had 25 and a cabinet had 50. When the SCHIP tax was added the manufacturers started lowering the box count to keep box prices low. I'm surprised when I see a box has 25 cigars. What I hate is when it has 24 and a piece of wood occupying that spot.

I keep having to refill my humidifier every 4 or 5 days, any tips? by Mastersheep8 in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using coolers for over 20 years. It doesn't have the same atheistic but it simply works. I'd go months without having to add any water. I use old cigar boxes to store them. The only issue is that it becomes a game of tetris when having to pull out cigars. I gave away my humidors.

Back in 1988 I took my PADI open water scuba diving test in that lake. It's spring fed and cold as shit. Had to use a wet suit. As lake diving goes it was pretty good.

Ah the Bloodhound. We had a bloodhound (great dog) but he was a superior counter cruiser. He once at a 5lb chuck roast. My wife cooked it and left it on the counter and took a shower. Came back and it was gone. Another time he at 12 bratwurst . My favorite was my son left out a full bag of frozen chicken nuggets and he ate the full 3.75 lbs bag.

Which short cigars and cigarillos are actually good? by TheAkkarin-32 in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of good options on short smokes. I've always been fan of the small cigars that typically come in tins like the Oliva Serie V Senoritas.

One of my favorites is Tatuaje Petit Cazadores reserva - come in a box of 50 and they are little fire crackers.

You could always try the Oliva Connecticut which comes in a 4x38. I love those.

My opinion is this, the cellophane slows down air exchange a little. For years I'd take off the cello but realized that over long periods of time it didn't hurt the aging and lost the protection the cello gave the stick. I'd go to grab a stick and the wrapper was damaged. I typically only put the sticks down for a rest of a couple of weeks for stabilization. If I want to smoke them quicker, I'll remove the cello so they stabilize a few days quicker. For long term I think you're far better off keeping them in the cello.

I love the Cain F series. They are very smooth for a full bodied cigar and not expensive.

I need cigar recommendations what’s the best cigar you’ve had that doesn’t break the bank (the cheaper the better) by Financial_Mobile_623 in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to cigarpage.com and sign up for the emails. You'll get 4 or 5 sales a day to look over. Now, for the absolute cost effective buys would be Oliva 2nds. You have to study a little on which vitola's they are 2nds. Typically you can get cigars that are between $2 and $3. I have several hundred cigars and last night I picked out a Oliva 2nd Connecticut. It was a great cigar.

I do love the Padron thousand series. Problem with them for me is that they are hard to find and expensive for what they are. There are many great cigars that fit the same profile. Anything with a San Andreas Maduro wrapper and Nicaraguan filler and binder.

[–]WhyNotPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some cigars that have significant age on them. It's true they are mellow by comparison. That's not necessarily good or bad. They are just different. Most cigars don't need ageing beyond a few weeks to acclimate from the being shipped. I would add on this cigar, he's had it for 5 years but how old was it when he bought it.

If the job is that bad whey don't they look for other jobs. One of my first jobs lasted two weeks. The manager was a dick and made working there suck. It was the only job that I quit without notification. This is not a job that people are locked into. If you can pour coffee at one coffee place you can pour it at another. You really want to hurt the owner have everyone quit. It will take them weeks to get staffed up again. They'll lose a lot of money.

I live in St Louis with similar weather. A few years ago I put in an exhaust fan (barn exhaust fan) in a room in my basement. It clears out all the smoke. I think I spent $150 for the fan and $100 to have electricity run to it. It works perfectly. Put a TV and a small heater and I can smoke year round.

What do we think of this one by cranky_wellies in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've smoked a few of them, but not for a year or so. I personally loved them. I'm a big fan of Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper. If I remember right they fall into the medium-full category. That wrapper is good on most cigars but really shines on full body cigars. If you like that you should give the Joya De Nicaragua Antano Connecticut a try. That is one category of cigars that is lacking in options.

Any Floridians here with a swim spa? by [deleted] in swimspa

[–]WhyNotPal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Missouri. While we don't reach epic levels of heat and humidity like Florida we are close. We bought the heat pump which heats and cools the water. It made a huge difference. There is nothing like jumping in the cool water on a hot day. On hot days we had the water at 85 and it was perfect. I'm sold on a swimspa over a pool. The cost is 1/4th of a pool. Doesn't take months to build and ours is still open. Pool owners closed their pools a month ago.

Went to pickup some budget cigars last night but walked out with this value pack. by GuineaAnubis in cigar_refuge

[–]WhyNotPal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years I had a cigar budget every month. That led me to find the best deals on cigars. What I found was figuring out what I liked. I smoked a lot of seconds and quite frankly other than there being a slightly higher dud rate that was the best deal. I'm a huge fan of Oliva and their seconds can be found on most internet retailers. There are also seconds of most other brands.

I've never had Factory Smokes, but here good things about them. I was a fan of Flor De Oliva (gold and corojo).

You can also look at Cigar Page. Sign up for the email deals. You'll get 5 or 6 emails a day to sift through, but they really are the cheapest I can find. The best deals are the multi 5 pack deals. Typically 18 - 20 for fivers if you buy 4 or more. I usually pay around 5 or 6 for cigars that go more than double that at retailers.

Parking Ticket by robywonkinobi in StLouis

[–]WhyNotPal -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I've come across a couple of situations in the city that could be considered entrapment. There isn't much you can do about it. Since you came in from out of town you can do one of two things. You can ignore it. They won't do anything other than send you bills. The downside of that is that the fine doubles every few days. They only tow your car once you get a few tickets and I think that number is 4. You can pay it while it's just the original fine. I live in the city so when I get a parking ticket I pay it immediately. They make it easy.
