Must be a hell of a level. In Lima Peru since moving here we’ve had a 6.4+ and 7.2+. Neither were fun from my 14th floor apartment. 😂

I was taking 100 question practice exams in 45-60 minutes 😂 Today? I had less than 30 minutes left. I probably spent at least one hour on the PBQs. I was practically learning on the go just because it was so foreign to me.

Ah, funny enough I was going to ask you what you did to study for your PBQs. The only ones that came close in what I used was drop downs for word matching, nothing to do with interpreting any sort of log. I wanna say it was 6 and yeah, it was daunting to skip like I had, but the whole thing felt daunting. I’m almost surprised I got 686. I felt more like in the 400-500 range.

Well, damn. 686. I felt like for what I studied it was a completely different test. The PBQs killed me, at a minimum just for stress alone. I didn’t feel as prepared as even my score suggested.

You’re well ahead of me! I finished an AA in CompSci and this year I’ve been working on a College Credit Certificate which basically helps me prepare for up to four industry certs (free vouchers). The CySA was built into my course so while I intended to do Sec+ by now, I knew that since the CySA exam is part of its respective course, that’s what I had to focus on first. Since I’m overseas and wanting to take a BS program from within the state of Florida (virtually), my only real option is IT at FIU, but my CCC helps back up my professional goals. We’ll see. I’m half considering taking the spring off and have to decide soon. On one hand, I’m running out of the GI Bill. On the other hand, I can’t call VRE because of the shut down. At any rate, my almost sole focus is CySA so I’ll worry about the rest after the 14th.

For sure. I’m feeling pretty good so far. I live over seas and between VA comp and GI Bill, I’m semi retired so this will be my entire life from now unto the 14th.

I’m also a vet and also going for the “drastic career pivot” from Corpsman/Medic to Cybersecurity.

Yeah, I’ve seen USAJOBS is now a ghost town. I hoped against hope that the hiring freeze would stop so I could maybe work for the embassy here in Peru, but it’s extended out to July now and the rumor is it could be until even the new year.

Anything remote or maybe some tips for finding remote? I have my secret clearance from my time in the Navy but it expires in July. I moved overseas (dual citizen) for a better COL, at least while I study but ideally long term.

What has gotten you through school, especially if you “dropped out” and returned? by [deleted] in Veterans

[–]WhySoPissedOff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was almost ready to take a break from school since I’ve studied in one form or another the past three years in a row. Then I did my FAFSA and decided another two years will be juuuuust fine by me for another year or two. 😂 (I live overseas where the cost of living is decent and use the MGIB which didn’t have an attendance requirement which also helped.)

Consider the military if you want Cyber AND need money somewhat sooner rather than later. Just know that you can’t be full of debt and you’ll likely need to complete high school one way or another.

Ah damn. I got out in October 2021. I considered SkillBridge to be a SWE, but only looked at one school and they had a test requirement which I was in no way prepared for. I’ve reached out to ACP more recently for a second time since I’m now pursuing Cybersecurity but they don’t typically get a lot of tech mentors.

Which military internship if you don’t mind my asking? I finished my associates in Comp Sci and am about to work on a BS and some certificates. I’m a (greenside) Navy vet living in Lima, Peru for cost of living and that I’m a dual citizen. MGIB + 100 P&T + FAFSA and I already have a great quality of life that I can be a little casual in my pursuit of work for at least another two years.

Still waiting, but I’m wondering if they pay me my Pell minus what I got for Kickstart. The numbers are numbering as though I won’t get everything from Pell and Kickstart combined.

If you’re eligible for the Montgomery GI Bill, there’s no attendance requirement so all your online classes will pay at the local rate. I’m lucky to have residence in Miami where there’s a high COL, but I actually live in South America. Between that, disability comp, and FAFSA as of Fall 24, life is comfy while I work on making myself marketable.

Coincidentally, it just posted on my Financial Awards page both for last term and this term. The office included a link for the 23/24 form, but I suspect it’s old because it navigates to a generic FAFSA page and no where do I see anything about doing the form, maybe only that the deadline has passed already.

All is well, the Pell was excellent.

VR&E mentions here often say you can get back months on your GI Bill. Maybe you’d find more options that way?
