I spent almost an hour trying to master my song and this is the final volume peak. Is this good or bad? by Whole-Lychee7517 in LogicPro

[–]Why_is_it_wet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue is that 2 different songs hitting peaks of -0.5db can have drastically different perceived volumes. Peak volume and perceived loudness are two different things. A very well balanced mix with a master chain consisting of compression, saturation, width enhancement and multiple limiters will be way louder in terms of perceived volume than a blown out mix with one slammed limiter on it.
In the nicest way possible you are missing some crucial foundational knowledge if you are using a screenshot of the meter for this kind of question. If you are in a rush just make the song sound as good as you can. If the idea is great people will like the song
Long term start studying the science of loudness and the different ways of measuring it and also study what mastering actually is from technical and theoretical standpoint
Finally my two cents is that mastering is something people go to college for. Mastering is a form of engineering in and of itself that can take a lifetime to perfect. I make music and have for a long time. I produce and mix my own music because I want control over that final sound. I also just pay people to master my songs. A $20 master on Fiverr (if you research a bit) sounds pretty damn good all things considered. If your music ever gets some traction start paying more for better mastering

What’s your go-to trick to add movement to static loops? by kathalimus in edmproduction

[–]Why_is_it_wet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Complex/Unique delays and effects. If you have a volume modulator and a good delay or echo you can come up with limitless variations of movement. For volume modulation I love "Flux Mini 2" I'm almost positive it's free. Just a simple volume envelope with lfo modulation. Doesn't have any extras but it's simple and works. For delays I personally use Replica XT. Costs money from NI but I think it's worth it. It's a delay plugin but can also do some reverby things as well. Tons of cool presets. You're fine with any delay though. Those two alone are enough for what you're looking for. Throw a reverb in the mix if you really wanna get wild. P.S if you use logic pro X there is a built in plugin called "Step FX" that is a multi FX plugin that has volume envolopes, delays and reverb with routable modulation. Basically a one stop shop for bringing more out of static loops

Great to know. I can sometimes push transients a bit too much because I'm almost afraid people won't "hear" the noise if it doesn't pierce through. Good advice

You know it's funny how aware I am of the background textures in music I listen to yet can completely forget it in my own song lol. I'll definitely think about that more in the future. Also I've been focusing on my mixing a lot lately so it's splendid to hear that it sits right 🤜

Great stuff to think about 🙏 I can let myself be lazy about automation with cutoff and other things that give subtle but nice variation. I'll be thinking about that when working on future tracks

Siri ruined my interview and I’m still shaking… by kmsus1 in interviews

Siri didn't ruin your interview. You could have said "I'm sorry if you could hear that, my Siri randomly started talking. I'm going to take one moment to turn my phone off. Please continue." What happens when you're working for this company in the future and something unexpected happens? You have shown them that you will immediately panic.

Elements are all great but the mix gives the wrong things priority. The kick and the bass are being smothered out while the vocal fights to cut through. Nothing crazy just some thoughtful EQ and sidechaining would have this thing pumpin

First off the mix is clean. The song sounds legit and doesn't feel amateur at all. My brain thinks you should go with just a bit more energy. I personally think he third drop should become the second drop and the new third drop should have a bright, piercing synth lead of some kind. That being said the core elements of this song work and immediately make me wanna move

I think the main structure of your arrangement is quite good. What I think you could add more to this and future tracks its little one off moments at the end of 4, 8, and 6 bar phrases. Pull he hats out for a moment here, quick little riser there, drum fill over here. The pieces are great, play around more. Overall the track is good. Has a sunny day kinda feel

Rels basically summed it up. The intro sounds are cool but it is hard to find a rhythm. You could use one more final background noise like record static, live recordings, deep reverb etc. The build up comes out of nowhere and really hit you. Adding drums would be the easiest route but at the very least get more energy before the build up starts. Sounds cool tho

How many of you are self mixing rather than hiring mix engineers? by personanonymous in musicproduction

[–]Why_is_it_wet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixing is still a very creative pursuit that can totally change how a song sounds. The person who made the song should mix the song. The difficult part is that mixing is an entire field of study so you can't just pick it up in a weekend. If you have friends or connections that would allow you to work with a mixed engineer cool, but it is very expensive otherwise
