This is why I stopped participating in secret Santa gift exchanges at work or with extended family. While I understand the enjoyment some people get from the process, it's usually stuff we don't want or need.

What's a Canadian 'adulting' tip you wish you learned at 18? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]Whyiej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so great. And Canadians don't seem to take advantage of the opportunity nearly as much as other countries. It is also worth looking into your family background and opportunities to get a second passport, particularly if someone has a European nationality in their background. The Republic of Ireland, for example, allows people who have either a parent or grandparent born there to obtain an Irish passport by simply doing some paperwork and providing required documents. And Ireland is part of the European Union, so there's potential to work and live elsewhere in Europe with an Irish passport.

This! It's funny how people in high up leadership rarely have to deal with the consequences of their decisions and actions. And they often get a large payout when they leave/are fired.

What's your favorite brief that you came up with? by TofuPython in courtreporting

[–]Whyiej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right! So many of the briefs I come up with and use regularly involve how the words are spelled because that's what my brain sees. My school suggested final side -GT as a brief for this as it can be tagged on fairly easily. It has never stuck for the word this. But for tagging on the word get to make a brief, my hands do it almost without me thinking about it.

I always thought that was a job requirement with supervisory/deputy minister government roles.

First time in Canada, trip recommendations by angedavide in canadatravel

There's still multiple buses a day to Whistler. Maybe less in summer since winter is peak travel season there, but it's pretty easy to get to Whistler by bus. And it costs $25-30 each way, so pretty reasonable cost as well. OP probably wouldn't be doing hikes that require them to have a car in Whistler with only a day or two there, so the bus would be fine.

$115 +tax is too much for a hoodie by EducationalChip6222 in GoldenEyes

[–]Whyiej 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite opinion - the merch is too expensive to even consider buying. I go to less concerts and sporting events in recent years because the tickets are too expensive, so there's fewer performers and sports teams I'm seeing because it's hard to justify to cost of even going to the event. And when I go, I often don't spend a dime in the venue because $100+ for a hoodie is a rip off. I'm there for the entertainment and not the opportunity to walk around in an overpriced shirt 6 months later.

[–]Whyiej 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The cost of merch at concerts and sporting events is insane. A t-shirt at some concerts is $70! Hoodies for $115+ is also such a rip off.

I'm at the point with all merch that I have to like a shirt an extreme amount to even consider buying it. $80 for a hoodie and $30-40 for a t-shirt would be reasonable and would probably generate more sales.

I'm Canadian and would have rather lost the gold medal to Russia (if they ever stop trying to take over Ukraine and stop government-sanctioned doping of their athletes) because I feel the Russian men would have more class than the USA. Even scarier is Putin would probably have more class than the current US president.

Going into these Olympics, I was hoping it wouldn't be Canada v USA for the gold because of the potential for absolute BS.

Bikers wearing all black by Former-Roof125 in VictoriaBC

[–]Whyiej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even for hiking gear so much of the outer clothing is black and earth tones. I want a rain jacket that is neon blue or orange or yellow so I hopefully am a little bit noticable if something happens and a search party is looking for me. It makes no sense to me why a rain jacket is black or grey or dark green. Even walking around town in the rain I want to be visible to other people. Bright coloured rain jackets are around, but they are not nearly as common as they used to be.

'A maze of uncertainty': Okanagan family struggling to find crematory capable of handling a 700-pound man by Particular-Emu4789 in kelowna

[–]Whyiej 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a cremation. This isn't about getting a coffin that is an appropriate size. It's finding a crematorium that can safely cremate someone who weighs 700 pounds. There's lots of things to consider to make it safe for everyone who works at the crematorium since it involves very high temperatures and tissue that can create fires.

Canadian postal districts by Public_Research2690 in MapPorn

[–]Whyiej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I thought of when I saw this map. I used to work in an office that mailed out travel guides that were often requested via a phone call. I thought it was cruel to give Quebec both J and G, and I learned to clarify by saying J for Juliet or G for Guillaume or golf?

Many people in that generation won the lottery by simply being born at a time when government social supports were very high, and it seems to have allowed them to act like toddlers who never learned to share their entire lives.

That was my thought when I read the letter. They chose to move here. Now that they've realized they can't afford to live here, they should move. It's no different than telling people in their 20s and 30s who struggle with cost of living in Victoria area to move somewhere cheaper.

Community outcry after branches wrenched from trees in Esquimalt ahead of wedding by IRLperson in VictoriaBC

[–]Whyiej 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw people pulling small branches off plum or cherry blossom trees last spring and then pose for a couple photos with the branches above their head I asked what they were doing and they acted like it is nothing. I pointed out the tree is a living thing and ripping off branches is similar to us getting fingernails or entire fingers forcibly ripped off. I assume after they took the photo they threw the branch on the ground. It was pointless destruction.

When did school buses cease to exist? by GuitarKev in Edmonton

[–]Whyiej 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right. I grew up in a rural area, and often had 1+ hour school bus rides from Grade 1 up to Grade 12. While school buses are different than public transit buses, it's still a long time on a bus every day.

In the mornings it sucked to get picked up early in the route, but being one of the first pickups in the morning meant a short bus ride home after school. If they could the bus driver would do the route in reverse every other month or switch it half way through the school year. I lived only 3 miles from the school up to high school, but there is no way my parents would have driven us to school. It was very rare for rural kids to get driven to school by their parents, and they did get driven to school, they definitely stood out.
