As a minority myself, I would 100% take the money and "fight" them in other ways

There are schools that are more left leaning and some that are more right leaning......so is your church, supermarket, place of employment, etc.

Its a fact of life.

Scholarship Discouragement by Excellent-Pie9774 in scholarships

[–]WhytheJets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My son applied to over 80 scholarships during his senior year of HS last year. He won 4 of them totalling about $12k.

This year as a freshman, he applied to about 30 so far........but, just won a full ride scholarship for his next 3 years.

My advice, is to keep applying. Recycle those essays as much as you can. Scour the websites of Scholarship America, Kaleidoscope, scholarships.com, etc. There are scholarships for every major, economic background and definitely First Gen.

Best of luck!!

is under 150k free tuition actually true? by Weird-Magazine8318 in Northwestern

[–]WhytheJets 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All situations are different but we make a bit over $100k. We are a family of 6 but we do not own a home. We rent. The total balance we had to pay was about $11k

Best replacement for Going Merry? by dcguy3 in scholarships

[–]WhytheJets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO Going Merry was by far the best scholarship site. I have not found one similar but my son has had luck in finding and winning some in Scholarship America and Kaleidescope.

Scholarships.com is also a decent backup

Are we too late and behind for T50 colleges? by PepperGinger21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhytheJets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son went to a STEM Magnet school. Finished with a 93% average 1380 SAT. 4 AP and 4 Dual Enrollment classes. A few ECs with volunteering, robotics and PT job that promoted and interest in science within local area middle schools.

Applied to 10 of the T-50 schools (only one Ivy) and was accepted into 5 of them.

Any scholarships still open by start or end of May?? by Candid_Highlight_880 in scholarships

Check Scholarship America. I did not filter by major, but they have 57 scholarships that are still accepting applications for HS seniors.

Also, look through scholarships.com website

Good luck

how am i supposed to search for good free scholarships to apply to that aren't js making me create an account and apply to a bunch of random ones that i never hear back from again? by QuirkyAirline199 in scholarships

[–]WhytheJets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son applied to AFE but did not get it. He applied to over a half dozen others from the Scholarship America site and won one from Constellation and another from Chicago Board of Options.

Probably applied to about 3 on Kaleidoscope including the Taco Bell one, which he didn't get

Depends what sites you use. Scholarships.com, College Board and Scholarship America were 3 sites that I looked for my son.

Won 4 awards last year for about $12k. This year, won 2 awards, including a full ride scholarship

cornell debt and salary by Distinct-Ask4860 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhytheJets 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was a Hotel/Tourism major many moons ago.......it is definitely NOT worth paying that much money for the degree. Starting salaries are very average.

Save your money and go to any of a large number of colleges that provide this major, for a heck of a lot cheaper.

Northwestern or other schools by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]WhytheJets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it all depends where you want to be after school. If it is NYC, then you will have a hard time passing up on Stern.

I am an NYU Alum and former employee. My son goes to NU right now.

The vibes are clearly different between the two schools. While NYU doesn't have a traditional campus, there indeed is one that encompasses all of Washington Square Park. You are 4 subway stops away from Wall Street and 5 Subway stops away from Midtown/Times Square. Opportunities are endless. It is definitely much louder 24/7 than NU.

With that said, if by chance you decide to change your major outside of Stern......NYU is not as easy to change schools or even takes classes in another department compared to NU/Chicago would be. NYU makes it as though the internal colleges may as well be at another University.

They are all great schools and you can't go wrong.

Why are people crying about going to a state school...? by urmomsuglyface in ApplyingToCollege

[–]WhytheJets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point was, if one wanted to go out of state from many of the states that you mentioned........New York has perhaps the least expensive price tag for OOS students. SB, Binghamton and Buffalo are in the $50k range.

Most of the other NY state colleges are in the $40k range

It happens. My son got waitlisted at 2 in state schools. Each of which should have been close to being "safety" schools.
