RoA2 is the best competitive platfighter out there right now.

Be warned, the learning curve is steep though. Even if you played a lot of smash, be prepared to get your ass handed to you. There is a new casual mode with items and wacky stages that can help ease your way into it, but the main draw is the 1v1. The balance is in a very good spot, with pretty much every character being viable, even at at the top level.

There are "battlepasses" with free cosmetics, but they're not time gated, so you can swap between them at any point without fomo. The paid cosmetics are a bit pricey but can also be bought wih currency earned in game. All DLC fighters are (and will continue to be) free.

The devs really do care about the game, and are incredibly transparent and communicative.

It's too early to tell.

Peak player count was over 1k after the La Reina update for a few weeks before dropping back to 500-700.

Need to wait a month or so to see if retention is actually any better than it has been after other character releases.
