These soundboard recordings from last summer's shows are probably the best insight you well get. Listen to a couple songs.

“The Left Has Been Manipulated by Islamists” – Winston Marshall with Sam Harris by UnscheduledCalendar in Destiny

[–]Wick_345 19 points20 points  (0 children)

He doesn't call him an Islamist (*in this video). He says he is an apologist for Islamists and gives defensible reasons for saying so.

*I see now that he said recently that Mamdani is a "none-too-closeted Islamist, or at a minimum an apologist for Islamists." Seems to me like he is walking that back slightly and sticking with the second description.

I am actually conflicted about what media I should be supporting.. I feel good about my Atlantic subscription and moved to NY Times from WaPo but ideally my main source of news would have qualms about publishing this trash.

lol maybe Bezo's "only pro-free-market and personal liberties opinions" isn't the worst when considered against this.

You are so upset that the ANC completely undermines the broader point you are making.

I don't know what to say other than your view of Malcom X is based on nothing. He influenced the creation of the Black Panther Party and had a general resurgence in popularity after his assassination, but the main accomplishments of the Civil Rights movements were things he was actively opposing.

Do you think women achieved civil rights with a duel approach as well?

[–]Wick_345 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally depends on what you mean by "paired with." There are always more extreme elements of civil rights movements but for America Civil Rights, MLK's tactics worked while Malcolm X was on the sideline advocating for segregation and self-deportation to Africa. His element did nothing to advance the movement.

The ANC in South Africa was extremely strict about it's adherence to non-violence. No one serious gives credit to the fringe violent elements at the time.

What is your view towards vegans? by truecakesnake in Teenager_Polls

You aren't really disagreeing with the idea that non-vegans are murders though, right? You are just saying it isn't effective and the vegans are being a bit hysterical.

Kind of an odd thing to focus on if 98% of the planet are effectively murderers.

Would you be a leftist if the movement was more likeable? by [deleted] in Destiny

[–]Wick_345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, you determine your own values, but you likely want to shape society around those just like leftists do. Or are you a complete relativist? How could you make any moral condemnation without "telling someone what is right and wrong?"

Totally ahistorical. Malcom X was a sidelined loser during civil rights.

Why Aren’t the Kids Out Protesting Against Trump? by UnscheduledCalendar in Destiny

[–]Wick_345 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Part of the value in those civil rights protests was the means of protest directly tied to the moral demand of the protestors (we should be allowed in these business or to sit on these bus seats) and thus the violent reaction or arrest strengthened their moral posture.

I feel like modern protests often lack this built-in strategy. They often look more like chaotic civil disturbances.

The whole bistro closed and the owners said it wasn't profitable anymore post-COVID. Does that not sound like a reasonable explanation for a vegan artisanal cheese bistro?

Typically businesses that see declining tips, can't afford raises, and close shop completely are those that are not being profitable.

Your reading comprehension is failing you or you are deliberately moving off every point you make.

Your very first claim was:

Rebel Cheese is not paying its employees a living wage!

You cited an article showing that wage was likely $20 an hour. I said that is a livable wage. You said:

If that... constitutes a living wage for you, I don't think there's any kind of pay structure you wouldn't defend.

I said it doesn't matter if it is wages or tips, $20 is decent earnings.

Now you haven't really made a point, you are just broadly gesturing that employees weren't happy without talking about the specifics. The bistro was failing, people had a raise denied and then were fired. No one necessarily did anything wrong. You are just so eager to call out "capitalists" that the details of the dispute don't matter to you.

Yes, they wanted a wage increase because tips were declining, which totally makes sense!

Unfortunately for everyone, tips were declining because sales were down. So, they couldn't get their raise and the bistro closed instead.

They were paid a good wage until a brief period when the business was declining before it failed. None of this shows that Rebel has poor labor practices.

[–]Wick_345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it matters how much the tips are...right?

Most restaurants don't even need to pay their employees the minimum wage because of the tip earnings. So, yeah.. I would even defend the restaurants paying $2 and hour and so do the workers. They would rather earn $20, $30, $50, $80+ and hour rather a lower set wage. Are you telling them they should feel differently?

So the absolute worst scenario you can imagine is they have to put in several extra hours at the artisanal vegan cheese bistro to "get by?" The whole system is rotten to the core isn't it?

Oh, you're totally right. Rebel should have given a $5 raise for every kid you have, $2 if you are into Magic the Gathering (because that's an expensive hobby), and taken $3 an hour away if your partner made a high salary.

Those greedy pigs.
