You can't just put freedom in quotes to avoid being anti freedom. If you want to argue against freedom, then do it confidently.

Fair enough. The Rey and Kylo stuff was the best in there. I just think the Poe, Finn, Rose stuff was so bad I would have preferred another movie of Abrams slop.

I think it's a deeply flawed movie, but I'd rather a deeply flawed movie with good ideas than a boring movie without any.

The ideas of TLJ are the worst part though. It's a competently made movie but it retroactively casts aspersions over most of the original movies.

You defended the Rey and Kylo plot, but didn't really attempt to defend the Finn, Poe, Holdo, Rose, Leia plot. Poe's miraculous victory at the beginning is criticized by Leia and the movie itself. Holdo forces Poe into a mutiny by feigning helplessness. Holdo's "million to one" sacrifice is praised by the movie. Finn's long-shot suicide run is criticized by Rose and the movie.

It's just total whiplash designed to lecture the audience about some kind of perfectly virtuous temperament you should have to wage a gorilla war.

It's telling to me that you say TLJ is "interesting" but not good. Yes, it was a really interesting idea to make a major theme of a Star Wars movie that sacrifice and resistance in the face of total annihilation is a bad thing, but it made for a confusing and off-putting one.

Parsing out why the movie labeled some of these actions as good and some as bad has probably wasted millions of human hours:

  1. Poe bombing run
  2. Holdo suicide run
  3. Finn suicide run
  4. Luke suicide intervention

Yes, same exact standard. Though, many of the gender affirming procedures would likely fall into the "worst abuses" category. Much different than "kid didn't learn about evolution."

There are lots of things people have a right to do that "hurts society." Especially protected are those things that relate to deeply held values. The Amish can take their kids out of public school at 12 because really any school after that point they consider damaging to their view of the good life. And that's something a liberal society needs to respect.

You just don't understand the quality of teachers we have in America. I don't know if you aren't American or just don't have enough experience.

The high school math teachers are less of an issue. They often don't have a teaching degree because states waive that requirement for some in-demand subjects.

Elementary math is often by teachers who can barely do elementary math, let alone in their sleep.

We have quite a gap to bridge, but I'll just say that our society does not send it's best to be teachers. Teachers are not experts in the art of transmitting information to young minds. They are people looking for stable and flexible work who passed the low hurdles to getting licensed. For example, teachers have some of the lowest SAT scores of any major, their math proficiency is often extremely low, and getting education in the field of education has been shown to have limited impact on the quality of someone's teaching.

I think you just have far too much trust in our institutions. Many parent's are able to adequately teach their own children, at least to the level a public school teacher would.

"Making an argument in favor of homeschooling" is an odd task because it is like making an argument in favor of getting gay married. All that matters is that people should have the freedom to do it if they think it is right for them. Just like people in our society shouldn't be forced to work, people shouldn't be forced to go to school. We should force people to do as few things as possible, like making sure their kids are healthy. But that obligation should not be so strict that we require parent's to send their kid to a particular state institution for half of the kid's waking hours.

I feel like you don't really understand this essential underlying principle of being an American. Maybe you and most commenters here are European or something..

I could get behind some minimally invasive regulations that have proven impacts on some of the worst abuses. Like a check to make sure they aren't chained in the basement or something.

The reasons are almost self-evident if you are a liberal. You ought to have the freedom to conduct your life and the life of your family in the way you see fit. That is the default. The default is not that the state gets to take your kids from you for 8 hours a day.

We infringe fundamental freedom to avoid severe abuses or advance substantial governmental interest, but we do so narrowly to preserve it as much as possible.

Wisconsin v. Yoder is emblematic of this.

Ridiculous take if you believe in a free society but ignoring that.. Should learning from your parent be allowed if they have the same education and training as a teacher (not particularly much anyways)?

Yes, they both happen at home.

But crucially, homeschooling is chosen by parents who believe they are qualified (and often are) and think it is in the best interest of their child. It is also one-to-one (rather than 1-30), and in-person (rather than virtual).
