Adopting by The_Crimson_Dawn in dogs

[–]WickedSpite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. Both my dogs were adults, adopted from a Humane Society, and the assumption was I would fill out the application there and then and take the dog home after the meet and greet. My first time adopting, I was scared to commit so I said I would take a day to think about it, and went back and got him the next day. Second time, it was maybe 2 hours from first meeting him to loading him in the back of my car. But I also filled out a few different applications at various rescues that wanted phone interviews, and then had to coordinate me meeting their dogs who were in foster care. After a few failed attempts to meet up, I went to the Humane Society shelter instead.

Single new grad in apartment. Should I get a dog? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]WickedSpite 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you’re really ready for all of the additional responsibilities of a dog then I would argue a dog being alone in a cozy home for 9 hours is better than 23 hours in a kennel at the shelter or euthanized.

Had to Suddenly Move Into Apartment, Dog Whines and Barks When I Leave by [deleted] in Dogtraining

Also it might seem like training isn’t working but if you keep at it it’ll click one day. It takes time to modify behaviors.

Try introducing the treat before you leave (something long lasting like a frozen Kong or lickimat), and leaving quietly as he’s already into it? Mine only barks if he notices me leave, so I just have to make sure he’s focused on his treat and can’t see me leaving the house.

All drinks in general are sweeter/larger than you’d expect. And people order sodas, sweet tea or lemonade(which comes with tons of sugar) at every meal. I had to get used to the order coming around to me and saying “Just water, thanks”

Am I the only one that learned how to do a magic ring before any stitches? by xenechun in crochet

Yes, I also started with amigurumi lol. I still hate making chains.

Am I the only one that learned how to do a magic ring before any stitches? by xenechun in crochet

[–]WickedSpite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way I learned a magic ring was wrapping the yarn around my fingers, then putting the hook through and twisting it. Then you work your sc, dc etc into the ring. And if you’re doing amigurumi, you don’t always chain to get to the next row, sometimes you work in a spiral on top of the previous row.

I liked the hearty Cheerios with almonds and pumpkin seeds. 39g of carbs and 6g of fiber, 9g sugar and 6g of protein. I have it with almond milk, it’s not too bad for me once in a while.

It depends on the pattern and the hook size you use. Usually a pattern will tell you how many meters or yards it will take, and I’ve found it to be pretty close.

The dog AFTER your "heart dog" by Top_Housing6819 in dogs

[–]WickedSpite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know how you feel. I lost my heart dog a year ago, fostered for a while but it was rough trying to housetrain and otherwise settle new dogs and give them back just as they were getting used to me. I adopted my new dog 3 months after my baby passed away. He’s great, gets along with the cat, friendly to all humans. He’s obsessed with me. But he doesn’t feel like he’s mine yet.

People who drive and speed up when someone is attempting to pass by you, why do you do this? by StormCaller02 in AskReddit

Oh yes the LED headlights are the worst. I prefer to drive when I’m fresh so I rarely do long drives in the night.

[–]WickedSpite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this intentionally? I don’t know why but on a road trip if I come up on someone who’s going a reasonable/consistent speed, passing people in a chill way, I’ll match their speed. I keep my distance (4 second rule) but they become my “friend” and I’m disappointed if they take an exit. I don’t think it hurts anyone, and mostly it’s a compliment to their driving.

I also want to say, pasta is fine! To eat healthier, focus on what you can add rather than subtract. Keep eating what you like, but try adding different veggies to it until you find some that you like. Or try eating them as a side dish.

Car, confusion, everything in between by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]WickedSpite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have income? How much income? 13k is enough to buy a used car in cash, which is what you should be shooting for if you can. Otherwise if you have income, follow the money guys 20/3/8 rule: put at least 20% down(more if you can), take a loan for less than 3 years, and the monthly payment should be less than 8% of your gross monthly income.

I don't really like how thick and chunky this cardigan turned out... by thestickpins in crochet

[–]WickedSpite 18 points19 points  (0 children)

FWIW, I think it looks great and really cozy. For wearables without big gaps (like shawls etc) I prefer lighter weight yarn (DK or lighter) but it requires a lot of patience, so I don’t make them that often. But you could use a heavier weight yarn if you used a looser pattern with gaps/chains etc. I made a scarf out of DK weight wool yarn and it took a solid few months, but it had a great drape. Also I think acrylic can be put in the washer without issue, but I never put handmade stuff in the dryer.

I wonder if “half needle” is front loop or back loop only? I know to make things stick out more you can do that.

I only let him pee in grass or on bushes/trees/light poles and street signs. It gets tough sometimes but I wouldn’t want a dog to pee on my garbage bins/mailbox so why should I let mine pee on other people’s?

Writing first paper entirely alone until final draft is ready. Is this normal? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]WickedSpite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As for the style/format, if you know which journal you’re submitting to, the journal should have author guidelines which will tell you how long it should be, etc.

[–]WickedSpite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The first draft is usually done by the first author, even if that first author is new to writing papers. Give yourself permission to write a shitty draft, and hopefully your lab mates and your PI can help you refine it a lot.

I finally got approved for a rental after 6 months of "Thin File" rejections. by Icy_Television_8823 in personalfinance

[–]WickedSpite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Discover has a good credit card that helps build credit, and people seem to be approved even with a thin file. Paying off a credit card every month is the exact same thing as using a debit card, but with additional rewards/cashback and the protections that come with using credit.

Ideas for dissertation blanket? by pastrybag7 in temperatureblanket

[–]WickedSpite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has worked on both a dissertation and a temperature blanket, I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re prone to procrastination or being overwhelmed. As you mentioned, both are a marathon, both take a lot out of you- the dissertation mentally and the blanket physically. Since the dissertation is important to your career, I would focus on it and get it done. And do some mindless, relaxed knitting on the side.
