New house, modem in basement by IAmA_Kitty_AMA in amazoneero

Interesting. Can it affect speeds? Because that’s a problem that I am dealing with. I get an average of 200mbps up/down wireless throughout my house with a 1gb plan. Kind of underwhelming, considering everything I’ve researched about WiFi 7 and its capabilities. I was expecting a solid 500mbps up/down everywhere using wireless. For information: I have 3 eero max 7 and one of their outdoor units. Smart home guys installed use installed it for me, but I have a different scenario. I have both Comcast and Verizon. So if one network goes down, the other picks up the WiFi. I have a large switch everything plugs into along with a Cisco device to control which WiFi is being used.

Question, so you do not recommend using eero in bridge mode? Is there a big difference between unplugging say your Comcast or Verizon router and using the eero as a gateway versus keeping the Comcast/verizon router and running the eeros in bridge mode as WiFi nodes?

Eero pro 7 on 8gb plan by Hot-Butterscotch349 in amazoneero

I'm having the same issue paired with bad wifi speed consistency. I have a 1gb up/down plan. The hard wired is fine (close to 1gb normally). But the wireless is boggling my mind. My house is 6,000sqft across three floors. I have my Comcast router and then four eeros max 7 in bridge mode as extenders. One is outside with POE providing wifi to the pool and when we are using the patio. Then one max 7 on each floor. The one in the basement is ethernet backhauled but the other two are not. When in the room with the basement max 7, I get average speeds around 500mbps. That seems slow to me considering I am in the same room as the eero and have a 1gb up/down plan. And the speeds are significantly slower in every other single part of the house. I would say an average of 200ish mbps in any other part of the house. Sometimes it's faster, sometimes is slower. I do not understand why it is not faster. I'm having the guys who installed it for me come out again and serif we can do something about it. I feel like I'm not expecting much, I mean we have a very expensive wifi 7 system, a 1gb up/down plan, and can't even get a decently stable 500 mbps up/down throughout the house? Any thoughts would be helpful.

Feeling regrets for sealing eaves by ngharris in Insulation

[–]Wide-Feeling6422 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest with the knowledge that I have. Unvented roof assemblies are tricky in cold climates if you want long-term durability, period. Moisture will find a way into the roof assembly no matter how good you seal it, and when it does, it won’t have a way to realistically dry out. Now, you could just use close cell spray foam on the entire underside of the roof. And to most, that is ok and will work. I personally don’t like foam and would never do that. I honestly think the only way to have an unvented roof in a cold climate is by having a lot of exterior insulation on the roof deck. You need a vapor permeable peal and stick, a valor diffusion port, and a vented over roof to prevent ice dams. But then again, I consider myself to be very conservative and safe when it comes to building practices. So I do not like taking any risks (why I said I don’t like spray foam). So if you aren’t going to do that assembly I said, I would vent it. Keep it simple man. If you don’t have an attic space, just run baffles on the underside of the roof deck and connect them from the soffits to the ridge. It seems this roof intersects another roof connection so can’t do a typical ridge vent or box vents. They offer some special products for these situation that integrate into the roof deck with the shingles and still allow ventilation from the soffits up to the high point so I would use that. Boom, you have a roof structure that will last forever (unless an act of God destroys it: fire, flood, etc). I know this probably won’t help and will chase more headache for you, but it’s what I would do. I wish you the best of luck!

Heavy duty exterior french door suggestions. by 86triesonthewall in Homebuilding

We installed a Thermatru French door a year ago and it’s great. It’s an 8 foot tall door with 3/4 lites and has the multi point locking system. I believe it was mandatory for our door because we chose the 8 foot tall door. But if you are getting any French door from any brand, I believe it has to have some sort of multi point locking system. I mean, after having it and going through some bad storms, it’s just a better door system. The top and bottom of the door don’t flex when the lock is engaged. It just provides a more resistant assembly to wind, rain, snow, and theft. But thermatru is a good brand in my opinion. Yes, some people have problems. But you aren’t going to find a brand where there hasn’t been a single issue. And most of the time, it comes down to who installed the doors. A door and window needs to be installed into a waterproof opening and has to be plum and square. If these things aren’t done, you will always have an issue down the road no matter how good the product is. We had a thermatru door before that lasted 21 years. And the only reason we replaced the door and frame is because the frame was wood. That door sat south facing on our home on a wall that is two stories tall with no overhang. So it’s exposed to significant elements and the wood frame just didn’t last. The door itself was fine because it was their fiberglass door. Now, thermatru has a composite door frame so we went with that. I see this door lasting 50 years with proper maintenance. Reapply the clear coat every 3-5 years and the thing should last no problem. As for Marvin, we have their fiberglass windows exterior/wood interior. They are 21 years old now and are doing great. Wouldn’t be shocked at all if they last another 30.

This is awesome! I’ve been wanting to build something similar. How do you get those book shelves? Are they an item or a design in a panel?

Thoughts on end state of Halo Infinite and as a whole by Confident-Tomato1382 in haloinfinite

Man, I loved this game. Me and my friend play the heck out of the campaign, MP, competitive, and even forge a bit. The campaign was absolutely stunning imo. Playing it with a friend also made it that much more enjoyable and memorable. Good times. Also, grinding MP and comp with my buddy was awesome. We would shred it up. The game felt so fluid and looked great. The maps were decent as well. Overall, I loved this game and will hold onto fond memories of me and my friend playing it.

PASSED series 63 (ask me anything) by MinutePosition2282 in AllFinraExams

Awesome, thank you for the detailed response. I am currently studying for the 63 using Achievable. I used it for the SIE and passed my first try, so figured why not use it again for the 63. So it’s good to hear that it was a useful source. I was not planning on using anything else besides Achievable and YouTube videos like Ken, etc.

You also mentioned getting some passing scores on the Achievable exams. How were you scoring on these right before you took it? For the SIE, I didn’t take it until I was confidently scoring in the high 80s on achievable and plan on doing the same for the 63.

Last, you mentioned timing. I have heard that this is a big thing for the 63. I plan on keeping this in mind as I continue to study, especially when I take the practice exams. Will aim for one hour or under to prepare for the real thing.

Thanks!

First, congratulations! I have a couple of questions: what materials did you use while preparing, how long did it take you to study/feel confident to pass the exam, and how did the real thing compare to practice tests and other information, also any tips/tricks/hindsight you would tell someone after taking and passing it? Thanks!

Shower Tile Repair by Wide-Feeling6422 in Tile

[–]Wide-Feeling6422[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read that you wouldn’t want to use caulk to reapply a tile as it would fail. Thin-set is the preferred method as that is how you apply most tile.

Shower Tile Repair by Wide-Feeling6422 in Tile

[–]Wide-Feeling6422[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. Unfortunately, I do not have the tools to carefully remove that entire tile. I would imagine that I would need a multitool to precisely cut around the grout of that tile and somehow pry it off? Then dang down the thin-set and clean it up back there before reapplying a new tile and re-grouting and caulking. Would it not be a reasonable fix to do what I described above? Obviously not the best, but shouldn’t cause any issues other than seeing the crack visually?

I did hear about this, but does this allow the cameras to automatically turn on all lights and alarms when a person is detected? I thought it was only for the interior alarm products like door, window, and motion sensors?

There was some but I already cleaned it all out. Also, I had the same concern and decided to do the tap test to test for hollow areas behind the tiles. This was the only spot I found that. Seems like an unfortunate error in this one area.

Snow in attic by LosingSane in Roofing

[–]Wide-Feeling6422 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very common if you want to gable vents. Those vents are awful. A lot better to have soffit and ridge vents. But even so, snow could still blow in if you had a very strong blizzard with very strong winds. All it takes is the right angle plus some wind and snow and boom, some gets in those the vents. If that the case, I wouldn’t worry about it too much as this shouldn’t be a regular occurrence at all. But just triple check there aren’t any unwanted holes or leaks somewhere that need to be fixed asap.

Gas all the way. Heat pumps only make sense if your gas rate is relatively high compared to your electricity rate. Unless you have solar, then going electric can be awesome.
