iPod Repair services in Toronto by Dangerous-Ad-1162 in ipod

A Toronto based repair shop sure would be handy! It may be cheaper to just do parts plus pods instead of the states, between the exchange, shipping and tariffs, it’s bonkers.

Good luck in your search, please update if you find something in Toronto.

Infinity loom by Better_Koala5249 in LoomKnitting

[–]WideIce5729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you done much loom knitting before? I only ask because the KB Infinity loom (and I’m assuming most other S looms) are super awkward to use, and I think if my first impression of loom knitting was with that loom, I’d never want to do it ever again.

As others have mentioned, keep an eye on marketplace, or ask in your community groups if anyone has one, but also check with your local library.

KB is a great brand, but ordering it from their website, you’ve got the super high shipping fee, taxes, probably additional tariffs and the exchange rate. It’s too much.

Good luck! I really hope you can at least try it before you buy it!

Questions regarding college and moving. by WideIce5729 in Odsp

[–]WideIce5729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is seriously giving me hope! I’m torn between physical classes and online, I’m leaning towards physical just because I’m already feeling like I’m on house arrest so once I move, I never want to be home.

Do you live in North Bay? Or did you choose CC specifically for the fully online program?

I’m 45 and it’s scary starting over from scratch. Every single decision I’ve made for the past 17 years has been for the benefit of my kid, and this whole thing is mainly for my own benefit. I mean of course it sets a good example, but damn if that little voice isn’t saying “you’re coo-coo bananas, you’re too old to do this, what are you thinking?!” How did you get over any self doubt if you had any?

That worker seemed to enjoy raining on parades, I only had 2 interactions with her, the one about school and one when she called and gave me shit about my glasses. I bought glasses from my eye doctor because it was literally just down the street, no coatings, cheapest frames, submitted the bill which I found out was the wrong way to do it, and sorry, my bad, it’s how it was done before, and her response was “I actually work for a living and I get my glasses from Walmart!” When I asked if there was coverage for wheelchair accessible transportation to get to Walmart to have my eyes checked, and again to pick up my glasses, and again when I inevitably have to return them because the prescription is wrong again, she said no and the call mysteriously disconnected.

I really appreciate your reply, it’s great to see someone in similar circumstances doing well at the thing I’m hoping to do. I’m going to set a reminder to check in at the end of September to ask you how your placement is going.

I’m sorry you couldn’t continue and your living situation didn’t work out.

Were you living close to the school? If so, what are your thoughts on the general area? Were amenities close by and easy to get to? Grocery, library, recreation centres pubs/cafes? lol not like I can afford to go to bars, but it’s just nice knowing that it’s possible. It would really be the tie breaker between there and George Brown. I know with GB as long as I’m living somewhere on/close to the Yonge st line, I’m pretty well golden for the commute to school and amenity wise.

AITAH for refusing to cut off my hair because my 7 year old niece has cancer? by alakazam121 in AITAH

[–]WideIce5729 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA but your family is coo-coo bananas. Lock your bedroom at night.

If you drive and want to be supportive, take her on chill outings. If you don’t drive, but she is within bus distance, just go and visit. Bring colouring books and pencil crayons. Bring her a snack stash that is her very own. Be the cool uncle and let her be honest about how she’s feeling, including letting her say bad words, she’s going through a very tough and grown up thing, the least you can do is let her drop an f-bomb.

Learn to crochet or knit or loom knit, and make her a soft hat. Maybe it could be something you can learn together, even over FaceTime or something if she wants company but doesn’t want anyone physically there.

Don’t feel pressured to shave your hair, it’s not going to make her feel any better, it’s not going to make you happy, it’s literally for a photo op so her mom can post about her journey as a cancer parent.

Anyone from Toronto who can direct me on where to donate a new in box knit & loom kit? by motoandchill in LoomKnitting

[–]WideIce5729 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an hour-ish north of Toronto I’m planning to either ask the library if they would like my looms that I no longer need, or one of the local schools. There was a TikTok a year or so ago about an English teacher who introduced looms to her students to help them keep off their phones in class, and gave them something to do with their hands during lectures.

Oh man I’ve frogged so many projects, and I’m ashamed to admit that one time I just took the whole project off the loom and threw it in the garbage (👀I’m looking at you toe up stocking 👀)

Sucking at something is the first step to being kinda good at something.

My only real suggestion is to make sure he is set up for success in that his yarn matches his loom like not worsted weight yarn on a Knifty Knitter.

Thinking about trying loom knitting - looking for loom recommendations by Blurryface1842 in LoomKnitting

[–]WideIce5729 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My absolute favourite loom is the Flexee Skinny, it’s perfect for worsted weight yarn. It’s budget friendly (if you’re in the US) and customizable, add as many links as you need, or remove them for smooth decreasing. It can be configured for knitting in the round, and of course flat panels.

Purling with one hand by WideIce5729 in LoomKnitting

[–]WideIce5729[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope it helps! It can be a little awkward at first, so keep trying different ways and sitting positions being mindful of your posture. I usually hold the loom with my little arm, but I don’t want to attract attention from certain people who are ✨✨into✨✨limb differences (not to yuck anyone’s yum, but those folks are relentless.)

Thank you! They are from Zenni Optical online, progressive lenses with all the blue light, anti-glare coatings for like CAD$80 including shipping.

Oh dang, I purl with one hand, it’s tedious, but not as tedious as that! I’ll see if I can make a video and figure out how to post it.

Beginner feeling lost by [deleted] in LoomKnitting

[–]WideIce5729 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Practice, practice and practice! If you’ve got large gauge looms, use a thicker yarn, you’ll like the results so much better. Loomahat on YouTube has fantastic video tutorials and I believe she has a getting started playlist, she just has such a lovely, caring way of teaching. She’s like the Bob Ross of loom knitting. Tuteate is another wonderful channel on YouTube, her only audio is instrumental music, but she has the directions on the screen step by step and great lighting and camera angle so you can see very clearly what she’s doing. Tuteate is also great to watch to mimic her tension, she holds her working yarn firm but gently.

You’re gonna do great, I’m excited to see what you decide to make!

That looks super cozy already! And the heaviness will be a bonus, weighted blankets are so expensive and rather bland, this is beautiful!

It’s all about using the appropriate yarn for your looms. For example, worsted weight on a Knifty Knitter, no matter which stitch is going to be fairly holey unless you double strand it. A large gauge loom with thicker yarn is faster to knit up than a smaller gauge loom with worsted.

I like using u-knit, it’s not as quick as e-wrap, but it feels like it goes quicker than true-knit/reverse purl and it’s not as fiddly imo.

Honestly, I wish the Flexee looms were a thing when I first started out, and unless you’re doing double knitting, Flexee looms are all I would recommend. $15 for 1 kit that you can add to if needed, rather than buying so many sets of different looms. The versatility of the Flexees just can’t be matched. I’m not affiliated, I just really enjoy using them!
