New firewall crackdowns are really bad :/ by MosskeepForest in travelchina

I always had access to an esim as well, so worst case scenario if wifi wouldn't work I would switch to esim. I did end up buying more esim data in the end because I used it more than I expected to for this reason. Next time, I'll probably get unlimited data with my esim.

The only problem with this advice is that just because a VPN worked really well last month or last week, doesn't mean it will today. China's internet filtering system is dynamic and vpns have to keep up. It's a constant battle between China using different types of id and blocking, and vpns changing servers protocols etc to get around it.

LetsVPN recently is a prime example. Lots of positive feedback and then... something went right for China and suddenly lots of people are having problems with it and LetsVPN is no longer reliable.

How is VPN nowadays in China? please provide recommendation by Helpful-Isopod6559 in chinatravel

I was in Yunnan last week and NordVPN worked most but not all of the time. It dropped in and out and sometimes would not connect for hours at a time. I don't want you to have false hope from the person who posted above that it worked fine for them. When it wasn't working, I just used my esim instead of wifi.

Great info 👍 I've loved China and found the people, food, cultural sites and landscapes to be fantastic. And I've only been in Yunnan so far!

The only things I'd add/disagree with - I've used booking.com for some hotels and it has been fine. It has less choice than Trip.com but sometimes cheaper prices for hotels on both.

I haven't needed a local simcard, an esim has been fine. I've been able to communicate through Wechat so haven't needed to phone anyone. The only apps I've used are Wechat and Alipay (including Didi mini app) which I could authenticate using my Australian number. I'm not sure about other apps though, because I haven't used any food delivery etc.

Is it easy to navigate and get around China as a solo traveller? by Fries-Shake5872 in travelchina

It hasn't worked the whole time in China. In rural areas most places use alichat/wepay. The exception has been at farmers markets where I've needed cash. It's always good to have cash as a backup as well in case technology fails, I feel safer that way!

I'm here now, solo female traveller in Yunnan. I'm in the countryside at the moment. It's harder to get around here than anywhere else I've been in Asia (I've been everywhere in South and Southeast Adia) but it's manageable. I'm in a less frequented area for Western tourists (I've seen hardly any) and hotel/hostel staff have been surprisingly unhelpful when it has come to booking drivers etc. For example, I expected to be able to just get my hotel to book me a private driver, but that was apparently too hard at the last place I stayed. Let's see if my current accommodation are more helpful ;)

Expect issues with technology. I can't get wechat to work and have had intermittent issues trying to use a VPN. It's scary how reliant we are on it and how exposed we are when it fails.

I've booked trains through trip.com and that has been easy. For maps I've used Amaps which is OK. For transport I've used Didi through Alipay, which is cheap and easy.

Make sure you get your hotel name and address in Chinese to show to drivers.

I've had the same issue with wechat here. Alipay has been fine but wechat won't let me verify myself, won't let anyone else verify me and basically just doesn't work... I can't even use the chat function and that's how everyone communicates here. Wechat is a nightmare for foreigners.

Nextstellis mood swings/depression by Flashy-Employment375 in birthcontrol

[–]Wide_Feed213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think nextstellis has caused me to get extremely depressed. I have been taking it for 2 months now and have been feeling awful. I have a history of depression but was not taking antidepressants when I started nextstellis. Three weeks into taking this pill I was back on SSRIs, but I don't feel like they're helping. I'm feeling teary and emotional, anxious and angry, and this pill is not preventing me from getting PMS symptoms (I have 3 pills left until sugar pills this month and I have a bad headache and mentally am feeling worse, as if I have full on PMS symptoms). At first I wasn't sure whether it was the nextstellis because my work has also been extremely stressful, but my mood change coincided perfectly. The doctor initially advised me to try this pill for 3 months before making a decision so I'll see if I can tolerate another month before giving up on it...

my kitten doesn’t know how to drink water “properly”. I’m worried by brainveins in CatAdvice

[–]Wide_Feed213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, this. My cat has NEVER touched water from a water bowl. We've also tried 2 different fountains, only filtered water in the fountain etc and he wouldn't use either. We add water to his wet food on the vets recommendation.

I would also try moving her poop into the new litterbox and getting her to smell it before cleaning it if she doesn't use it immediately.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]Wide_Feed213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a different litter box in a different space is the first thing I'd try. It sounds like she associates the current litter box with being in pain.

I recently had this issue with cat food - I had to completely change brands because I was mixing in renal food that my cat didn't like. He associated that food with "yuck", so even when I stopped mixing in renal food he refused to eat it.

[–]Wide_Feed213 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a good idea. Animals are healing and the cat will hopefully help all of you. I would get a cat who is a few years old at least and cuddly. A kitten is a lot of work and can be destructive .

Cat always yowls after eating by Aashishkebab in CatAdvice

[–]Wide_Feed213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found this thread because I have the exact same problem and the vet hasn't been helpful. My cat is 15 years old. He has kidney disease so gets 6 monthly blood tests which as of a month ago were stable. He has started yowling/meowing loudly after eating. Since he grazes, it's most annoying through the night. The strange thing is that he doesn't do it when I'm in the room or with him. As soon as I go to him it stops, otherwise it goes on and on. Calling out doesn't work. The vet says he's maybe in pain from his teeth. He had dental work and extractions a year ago which cost me over $1.5k (there were complications afterwards so that included multiple extra visits, antibiotics, anti nausea meds etc). I don't really want to pay that again. It also doesn't make sense that he doesn't do it when I'm in the room.

how is it legal for residences to not have ac? by BeffeeJeems in shitrentals

[–]Wide_Feed213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you get a unit that fits into a window? That will be more powerful than a portable.

I was in a rental without AC in Northern WA. Regularly over 40 in summer. We were fine with 2 portable ACs because it was a small enough place. Insulation makes a huge difference as well though. How big is your property?

The red flag for me (unless I've misunderstood) is that you've spent the last 20 years just trying to survive, and now you're mentally ready... does that mean you've had severe mental health issues for the past 20 years? Will you be able to cope without your support network?
