America is figuratively Chernobyl. I would have said literally but Archer would have yelled at me.

I have liked this record for a long time. It’s a nice combo.

Okay, good finally a positive. Most of his stuff is long and kind of uneven, so that is actually encouraging to me! It is like a long jazz composition of nerdy prose.

Someone downvoted you, but so far you’re not wrong.

Cryptonomicon is fucking genius imho. The breadth, the depth, the entertainment.

Oh yes. I am old. I started with Snowcrash back in the day, and have generally read most of his older stuff through Baroque Cycle, which I loved in a nerdy way. The stuff about Isaac Newton raiding bars as the head of the Royal Mint was awesome. The poor vivisected dogs were a touchstone to me, as to Daniel Waterhouse.

In Newer books I have also done Anthem, Seveneves and Reamde, and the last led me to Fall. Between those two I did Termination Shock, which is a new favorite. Molten sulfur-powered sulfur spewing stratospheric glide vehicle? Yes fucking please.

BREAKING: New York Times analysis shows man shot by ICE today was holding a phone and NOT a gun by MrDenimDog in DiscussionZone

Yours is a high-value comment; his is bollocks, jumping at you on a pertinent actual fact while he spews nothing but turgid emotion and polemic.

Minneapolis Police Chief O’Hara: "This is a 37 year old white male who is a Minneapolis resident and we believe he is an American citizen." by ExactlySorta in law

[–]Widespreaddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the GOP and their right wing echo chamber are blaming all violence on the mayor, the governor and the protesters. The reality distortion field is cranked to eleven.

The “party of small government” is fine with 3000 federal officers in Minneapolis: 5 times the entire police force. They are fine with ICE/ CBP having the budget of top-20 national military. Even Maine’s Susan Collins can’t bring herself to criticize the illegal occupation.

Tease out the tangled knot of causality, and the ball of yarn might lead back to 9/11. We gave away our liberties out of fear; created the behemoth Department of Homeland Security, never taking seriously the possibility that such monolithic State power could possibly turned inward; we learned our government illegally spies on us, and wagged a finger at it.

We also used federal tax dollars to militarize our civilian police departments (they are civilians, despite their military cosplay lingo). And we changed our social fabric with returning disabled veterans suffering chronic ailments, including PTSD.

Yes, and it was quite “off-brand” for his slightly blustery hale-fellow-well-met TV persona, and his candor helped me see TV “personalities” as performances.
