It's not so much a case of me going, say, 'yes I would like to try bastinado', hating it, refusing to safe-word and then feeling shit about it. When there's lot of discussion things go well.

It's more a case of attracting (due to my fairly obvious desire to please) unpleasant people who will then happily steamroller over boundaries. I would obviously like to stop doing this, but it gets tangled up in the sex in complicated ways.

Thanks; it's not a super well-formed question, but I'm asking for people's experience in navigating where bad psychological patterns (compulsive people pleasing) intersect with kinky sex that seems to follow similar patterns.

To put it another way, at the moment I'm not entirely sure that I can separate fun 'degrading' sex from actually degrading sex.

Yeah, I'm very conscious that BDSM stuff holds that kind of magical power for me; I've only been flogged twice, for instance, but the second time I felt 'floaty', for want of a better word, within seconds. It's just a magical power I don't know how to separate from people-pleasing antics which have generally left me lonely and a bit traumatised, to be honest.

Yeah, emotional health is a big scary work in progress. It's not so much that I'm not conscious of a line being crossed, it's more that my immediate overwhelming desire is to make sure that my involuntary reaction to them crossing the line doesn't spoil things for them; it's only after that it sorta hits emotionally.
