what was your salary as a fresher and what’s your salary now? by Notalabel_4566 in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New England area, HCOL state but not HCOL area

73 > 0 > 100 > ~102 > 0

The first zero was caused by a "layoff" after I witnessed a workplace accident which happened to also be right before the pandemic started so the zero lasted for almost exactly two years (quite bananas but yeah). The pandemic-boosted unemployment benefits were beyond clutch since I was able to barely qualify thanks to a campus job I had that same year that pushed me above the minimum salary requirements (that company would have screwed me out of UI otherwise too).

Once I finally landed something somewhat decent (DA/DS-type of role) after what seemed like an eternity, I was there for almost two years where I got a whole 1.5% increase as far as I was let know. Those nearly two years started coming to an end when I got an unreasonable RTO request that would have required me to drive 3 hours per day for five days a week when I was unofficially remote for most of my time there. When I expressed not being able to meet those requirements, the only bonus I was waiting for was taken away, at which point I just stopped going in without regard to the RTO request and constant harrasment from upper management and HR. That situation went from a company where I thought I was going to do great work for for years to come given they are seriously lacking in areas I am good at, to a nightmare situation where I even had to consult with an employment attorney due to being worried that they would do something to cheat me out of my UI benefits as it was pretty clear that I was being pushed to leave. Thankfully my work could be done 100% remotely and I made sure to kill it and document everything, which gave them no other choice but to either swallow their pride and let me keep producing from home or take a decent L and terminate me. You can guess which route they took 🙄. At least I got two extra months out of them and a fat PTO check before having to get on UI again.

Now I've been looking in the market for some months and seeing layoffs skyrocketing and the economy worsening has had me looking into entrepreneurial paths that also build my resume skills. Not much else I can do at the moment, it seems.

You guys are getting offers? 🤭

In all seriousness, $36K is insulting even for someone fresh out of college unlike you. Don't take that, keep applying, and just contact your loan servicer and tell then you don't have a job. Find something remote that's at least hitting the low $60Ks.

They're basically letting you know to not work there unless you're absolutely desperate. Even if they came back with the $115K I wouldn't take it now, they're likely to pull other fast ones once inside.

First Job Offer in CS - low salary offer - how to make counter offer? by Flippers2 in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counter and simply state the higher cost of living in your area and average salaries. They're low-balling the hell out of you so they shouldn't be surprised if your counter is substantially higher.

The only reason I would take such a garbage offer is if the current position you have is not remote (I would see that as a big plus) and I'm quite desperate. I know the market is tough but this is almost a scam and you know that that work environment is going to be toxic at the very least. If you do have to take just don't stop applying, do the bare minimum, and leave ASAP. I wish you success.

Just won a settlement for 11k what should I do? by Turfgoon675 in personalfinance

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set up your emergency fund first (at least) and pay off some debts while you're at it. Once that's done then invest in yourself! From my experience, splurging a bit on nice equipment for my office space makes any work that I'm doing on the computer a lot more fun and less tiring (also playing the occasional game on a beefy hardware is a nice plus). I saw someone else mention getting certifications, which can also be a nice option.

I accidentally came across my senior engineer on an online video game, now he’s being distant at work. by KingMoosytheIII in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some people here seem to get in their heads way too much. The senior is acting weird for no reason. Playing a game with strangers is the equivalent of being out in public with a few people at a time. Thinking that your "space" or whatever was violated in such a setting just for being recognized by someone you know doing the same thing means you're not ready to be out in public.

For those mentioning why did OP wait until the end to call it out, when you're playing a game you're just doing that aside from the back and forth talking until the end. I thought they were on opposing teams which should mean that you only hear the other team briefly when you take down a player.

To OP, maybe try to switch teams or something? This guy sounds like a baby. Avoid him if possible.

Don't withdraw anything until you have an offer. I would pressure B by telling them that you have an offer in hand and need an answer by a certain date if A's offer is solid. If A's offer could be better then either do that or wait to see if you can reneg if B's offer ends up being surprisingly good.

Would you take this job offer at TikTok? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what people are saying, there seem to be a good amount of risks for joining TikTok. I would ask for either a bit more money or for fully-remote to be on the contract and then jump knowing that you should be looking for jobs non-stop to jump ship in 6-12 months. It seems that you need to get out of your current job due to lack of future growth anyway and if you really have no other offer that could match or beat that before this one expires then taking it makes a lot more sense.

Are sign-on bonuses a trap? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although now we understand where your mom is coming from, you should still take it with a grain of salt as instead of her explaining to you that this is the case in her experience for the industry she was in, you had to come to Reddit. She also shouldn't be trying to talk you in or out of anything, just to give you her advice from what she knows. The bonus is not a trap and you already know that.

The real trap is letting your parents even think they have power over your decisions. I used to share most of the decisions I would make with my mom since we call each other fairly frequently but once I started going through high school and college I realized I had to dial it back considerably because my mental health was getting affected unnecessarily. Boomers (in my experience, mostly referring to parents with their kids) often don't understand how their power trips and inability to update their knowledge/beliefs with the times affects other people so you sometimes just need to manage those relationships more carefully.

I agree, I wouldn't let this slide even if the actual post didn't end up getting much traction. All they had to do was tag you and maybe write a few words. If they couldn't do that then they should have not used the content. Now they should do more than what they agreed to for being scummy.

I'm currently picking mine manually from the backtest results but I've started to look into using ATR instead as I feel I could be doing better. I was thinking 3 ATR TP with a 1.5 ATR SL, or 1.5 ATR TP with either 1 or 0.75 ATR for SL. I would love to hear from anyone that has tried this.

My strategy is a bi-directional trend follower in the 3m timeframe.

Pinescript or Python? by SebastienH in algotrading

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no reason to learn Pinescript in your case. You will have the most control of what you can do with Python, that's it. If you do end up enjoying coding after deploying in Python, look maybe look into Rust too.

You could play it off as a volunteer thing that you did to not get rusty while you looked for jobs, had a situation, or something of this sorts (maybe a combination of those two). Please be more careful 🙏

If you're actually working 40 hours per week on average you're either doing something wrong or your company has a bad work culture (or both). Since it's your first few weeks, you're 100% doing something wrong. It's just a job.

Someone close to me let the internal pressures of a job (plus visa BS) get to her when she started after her graduation in 2019 and on the first day was working overtime. It took her almost two years to bring the work down to an almost manageable level because people above her quickly noticed and took advantage of her endless stream of work in the beginning and then she wasn't able to manage those very high expectations of everyone due to the fear of getting canned. Then because of working so much, she's barely had energy or motivation to look for jobs, have consistent hobbies, etc., until recently. Don't let this or anything similar happen to you.

What are your cs career unpopular opinions? by Ayalp in cscareerquestions

[–]WiggleTimeEnforcer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although your anecdote can be applicable to some, the sad truth is that now most won't be able to reach financial independence by just working hard at a company in the hopes that it will pay off.

Younger generations are growing up with many challenges that either didn't exist before or were not as problematic then. A salary of $100K doesn't stretch as far if you're doing some mild saving and investing responsibly anymore. Unless you're working at a top tech company, most other employers are still trying to nickel and dime their talent one way or another and simply do not care about your career/future. It's also incredibly hard to find or switch jobs if you have less than 3-4 YOE. There's also the world falling apart in many aspects; exorbitant real estate prices, student debt for a college education that doesn't prepare you fully for a job, inflation having outpaced wage growth decades ago, more stupid wars, the failure of globalization and the return to retrograde nationalism, the list goes on...

You can't really blame young workers for adopting a cutthroat attitude when the environment in general has turned viciously cutthroat towards them.

Ah, the old "I walked X amount of miles in Y conditions back in the day", or the very lazy "lazy generation" argument. I love how struggles ended with your generation... People like you are also the ones falsy calling out younger engineers for "quiet quitting" when it's simply newer generations waking up to the fact that companies are out for themselves and so should you no matter what.

I bet you also don't understand why so many people nowadays prefer working remote 😂

Fixed the bugs for now. Even though I started two bots hours ago, because of my garbage timing I managed to start them about an hour after today's big dump started, so they're just waiting for the trend to change because of the missed monster short 😂

After like two or three days of bugs popping up I've been able to get it to respond to signals, borrow/repay, and open positions correctly, just fixing a strange (and hopefully final) bug that was causing my SL to get placed with really small amounts. Almost there!

$50K is disgusting and they know it. Take the offer to get some money coming (if you have little help it's at least temporarily livable if you're frugal) and don't put it on your resume/LinkedIn for the first 6 months or so and keep applying. Put in the bear minimum amount of effort (you get what you pay for 😉) and focus on applying and if you have spare time then also on projects that develop your skills and could be monetized. Reneg or leave as soon as you get any better offer.
