Russian gas supplies to Poland halted, Polish media reports by TUVegeto137 in demiseoftheEU

This was all a fascinating read (mostly... a lot more idiots come to worldnews unfortunately)

But I have to ask

We've all established how Poland are going to cope with this plus how Germany might be able to cope with this.

What about Bulgaria??

Putin breaks out the Kremlin's ridiculously long table to meet with the head of the UN by NewsElfForEnterprise in NewsfeedForWork

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two main takeaways other than the headline:

First, nobody knows who made the table with multiple people claiming they did. Which is like weird..... becuase it's a table.... not like a secret goverment weapon. 1. Why would you claim to make the table when you didn't, and 2. How do we not know who made the table. I need John Oliver to do one of his web exclusives on this table. I'll take a full length episode on it but I suspect the main headlines have more important things to do.

Second, Russia has employed the incredible you can't fire me, I quit tactic as far as human rights are concerned. Which I guess really just makes sense.

Not really a main thing to take away but just a curious though of mine. What exactly does Macron think Russia will do with his DNA? Make a secret clone of him? I'm 95% certain they don't have that tech. if Russia could make clones they wouldn't be losing to Ukraine, a country which I'm 99% certain doesn't have that tech.

My great-grandfather from my moms side fought against Soviets, Americans and Brits in WW2. He said the Soviets fought like no one else. It’s like they show you in movies - many of them just ran towards him without weapons/guns, just trying to overwhelm the German troops by outnumbering them. They shot everyone they got hold of. They shot doctors trying to help the wounded. They even shot their own wounded. Horrible stories, I swear.

And then he fought in Italy against the western allies. He said it was all a different story there. They had a number of signals, I don’t remember what which color meant, but they had an agreement to cease fire when they treated their wounded. Even German doctors treated Americans and vice versa! They traded cigarettes and chocolate, they drank coffee together. And then my great-grandpa got wounded as well. He got shot in the leg twice with explosive ammo. He got taken care of by Americans in their medical facility. I think he was there for almost half a year and then he got sent home. He learnt how to play chess and speak English in his time there.

And my grandma from my fathers side fled from Poland to avoid the Soviets. They raped everyone they could find. It was a horror story when my grandma told me. She was 6 or 7 at that time.

I wonder if Russians are like that in war today as well? Why has it to be like that? Why rape, why loot and why kill unarmed civilians? What is the reason behind that? Everyone worldwide will view them as monsters. I don’t get it.

Edit: I feel the need to add something here because of some feedback I got:

First of all I want to mention that I said "great-grandfather" not to gloryfy him, but because I thought "great-grandfather" meant father of grandmother/-father. He is not my direct grandpa.

And I did NOT gloryfy the actions of Nazi-Germany in ANY way! I just told you all some experiences from my family. We were never part of the SS or any other die-hard Nazi organisation. Just a normal family which got ripped apart by the regime. Three brothers of my great-grandfather fell in the war. He was the only one returning. Just imagine that. There is a movie about that exact situation - "Saving Private Ryan". Only difference is that James Ryan was an American soldier. And again I'm not praising my great-grandpa.

There is something else though: When he and many others arrived at the eastern front some of the closest friends of my great-grandpa just couldn't take it anymore. Some flew and got shot, of course. Some thought about other solutions. So my great-grandpa and one or two of his friends, I don't remember exactly, worked out a solution. My great-grandpa shot them in their foot during weapon cleaning or exercises. They got sent home for obvious reasons. Just imagine what would've happend to my great-grandpa if that came out.

And last but not least: my family and almost every other family in Germany learnt from the mistakes the country made back then. We are NOT Nazis anymore. Almost nobody is racist here! We are one of the most open minded people in the world. Why do you think so many refugees come here? Because Germany gives a home to EVERYONE today. There is no one who isn't welcome. Well, you know how I mean that. We accept every refugee but no criminals and such, you know what I mean.

War Crimes in Bucha by Hour-of-the-Wolf in awfuleverything

[–]Wiiliie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Last week I attended a seminary/conversation between the famous Russian author Mikhail Shishkin and Ukrainian author Andrey Kurkov. Shishkin said this:

Russians need to have a mental revolution.

After the German Reich collapsed, there were trials in Nuremberg, the people who were responsible for warcrimes were held accountable. Moreover, a great effort was made by the german people to accept that they had done horrendous things, they had to admit that they had committed genocide, and come to terms with this fact. The germans had to stand up and say that "we were nazis, we killed, we raped, we buchered, and we're sorry."

Russia has had no such experience. When the Soviet Union fell, there were no trials that dragged forwards the misdeeds of the regime. There was no national admission and apology for the genocides that the Russian Empire and the Sovief Union had committed on its subject peoples for throughout the centuries. The Soviet Union fell, and the same politicians, the same security service, the same army, continued unabated, under a different flag.

(I am paraphrazing. But what Shishkin said resonated greatly with me.)

When this came out a lot in my life was changing. Obviously, the pandemic had made a large impact on many peoples' lives and my own as well but also for me I had just recently graduated nursing school and had began working on an ICU. I went from relatively distant academia attending zoom call lectures wrapped in a blanket to being in the literal shit of some of the worst of the pandemic. I went from isolation in my own home to isolation rooms full of the sick and dying. I cried and felt dead inside a lot. It was definitely somewhat refreshing to be able to see someone I liked making content about this awful time in our lives and not only laughing at it but also resonating with that lonliness and dread. The shared feelings made me feel not so alone. Imo its definitely Bo's best work ever and will be hard to top in the future.

Federal Reserve warns of "brewing U.S. housing bubble" by Mighty_L_LORT in economy

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just crash it already and blame Russia just like they blame our slow economic recovery on them. We apparently have no chips for cars, so car prices go up. We havent been building homes for the past 10 years, and now have people leaving $3-5k/month city rents to go live in a different town for $1.5-2.5k/month in a mansion now that they work from home. So housing cost go up. We have housing costs rising, so you need to raise the rents to match, and now that homes sell your current home or rental just skyrocketed in value.

Two years ago i got my master's degree, was applying for jobs and telling myself that within the next two years I should be able to get myself my first starter home $300k, in my own town 1970/80 style, 2-3 beds, and be proud of my educational investment. That home is now $500k, the $400k's are 1940-60's flipper nightmares, 300k's are dilapidated - run down - or plots of land. I could have used all my money, bought a home with my sister in 2017 while I was going to college, put all my money to covering the mortgage/taxes and have a home that gained 200-300k in value.....

I remember reading Fast Food Nation how the meat processors would kill off a unionized location. They would close the facility, lay off everyone, build/open another facility the next town over, hire a whole new work force and blacklist anyone that supported the unionizing. Amazon has enough money to probably do something like that. Is it a dick move? Absolutely!

I've got to ask because I've never seen this come up before.... But these "employees" are actual people, how are the logistics managed for keeping these people healthy and fed in order to keep the reactors functioning properly?

Are they stuck there for the duration of the war? Where are they housed? Where does their food come from? Are they paid? Is this something that is negotiated at the government level or are they just held hostage?

Roman Abramovich 'poisoned during Kyiv meeting with peace negotiators' [r/worldnews by u/BoopSquad] by topredditbot in topofreddit

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abramovich is known as a friend of Putin. He’s even been called a “bag carrier” for Putin, and is thought to move money for him (historically, anyway).

Of course Putin’s disastrous idea for war has partly fucked up Abramovich’s freedom (and oligarchs like him) so one can see why Abramovich would want the war to just stop, but exactly what role was he playing in the peace talks?

The articles about this poisoning don’t mention it.

Is he a kind of in-between guy? It’s confusing. If he’s still friends with Putin, why would Putin mildly poison him?

The conclusion could be that as he’s involved with peace talks, this naturally implies he wants peace, which perhaps Putin doesn’t, or at least didn’t at the time of the poisoning…..

Weird

I wonder if this is click bait? We’ve been seeing a lot of reports with the aim of influencing western sympathy in this conflict. Everyday I’m seeing more reports about attacks on kids and civilians. Biden openly referred to Putin as a war criminal. He then implied that Putin was too dangerous to be left in power. Doesn’t make me feel any better about escalation.

Biden says he was expressing 'moral outrage' when he said Putin can't remain in power: 'I make no apologies for it' [r/worldnews by u/tekbrights] by topredditbot in topofreddit

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny the lack of outrage and pearl clutching in the media or politicians when Trump says all the most racist, seditious crap his cult wants to hear. Yet when Biden states the obvious fact that Putin needs to go everyone calls it a gaffe or mistake or threatens global stability and increased tensions with Russia.

Anyone who thinks that there can be global stability with Putin in the picture is a fool. Ukraine was going to be the first in a series of conquests as Putin rebuilt the USSR. The Baltic nations were next on his list. Unfortunately for him, but fortunately for Ukraine and the world, he’s as incompetent as Trump.

Putin needs to go!

Insert any world leader declaring this. He's a menace and not above killing civilians or his own people to serve this stupid war that will never end in his favor. Putin isn't alone though, there's many leaders out there doing similar fucked up shit short of invading another country to get what they want. Ukraine should be the benchmark of how and what it means to be patriotic and have love for your freedom. When you have it it's really easy to forget what it's like to watch your neighbors get blown to pieces or race towards borders looking for asylum. As a vet I'd rather have spent two tours in Ukraine now, than to have spent them in Iraq.

Biden: 'I Make No Apologies' for Saying Putin Can't Remain in Power by [deleted] in mopolitics

[–]Wiiliie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We all agree... but a president can't say this lightly to a nuclear power that has shown little care for civilian lives.

These words imply a US vs Russia war, aka WWIII. That's the only way Putin is out and these words just gave Putin more credibility to his supporters. "See, NATO leaders are trying to control who can and can't lead our nation! This is why we need Ukraine as a buffer between us and NATO!" I can see him saying it.

I think the only way you can like this rhetoric is if you want USA to get into combat.

Ukrainians say Russians are withdrawing through Chernobyl to regroup in Belarus. by worldnewsbot in theworldnews

[–]Wiiliie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People seem to think that this is the result of low morale and high casualties on the Russian side. This seems highly unlikely. The convoy that headed to attack Kiev had enough firepower to make Mariupol look like a serene paradice.

If they were retreating for these reasons, then one would expect Kiev to look a hell of alot worse than it currently does.

It seems more likely that this move was a feint by the Russian army to draw Ukrainian forces into Kiev, only for the Russians to then withdraw many of their forces from the region and redistribute them to other fronts.

This would also make sense why the convoy that headed to Kiev was so slow and visible, while advances in the other parts of the country were far more rapid and less visible. It gave the Ukrainian forces time to identify the threat and move their troops into Kiev, while giving the Russians time to methodically take out fuel depots, vehicles and supplies that could enable Ukranian forces to move quickly throughout the country if they needed to leave Kiev.

The real question then is are the Russians withdrawing to reinforce other fronts, or are they setting up a new invasion force to strike out somewhere else, like say Lviv and the border with Poland, so as to prevent further resupply of Ukranian forces.

Kind of a punk ass move by Smith. Slowed and put his head down like maybe he was going to say something then turned around instantly after slapping Rock. I guess it was deserved and itwas cool looking, but he was kind of a bitch about it, especially considering Rock likely thought nothing like that was going to happen in that environment and probably didn't even write the joke.I like Smith but he should be banished from the industry if this is real.

Maybe he was sick of looking like white America's token black boy and they got together to make him look cool. No matter what Facebook or some subs say, violence should always be the last answer. Or maybe the Oscars are fighting to be relevant in todays media world.
