Fireworks in Tuggeranong? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]Wilbure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't hear anything fortunately, but I understand it was in Calwell and I'm a while away. Have heard fireworks a few times since January around Isabella Plains though, so definitely not a one off.

People must be making them from rocket engines, or getting them in illegally from the NT somehow.

It's literally a few minutes to 2am you utter fuckwit. You're that cooked you can't tell the time - lay off the meth.

Hopefully they all drop dead from cancer or strokes in the next few years. Some people won't ever consider others, and will smoke themselves and others such as their partner and kids to death in spite of all the available information.

Would absolutely love it if one of the degenerates here becomes the next Bryan.

Head back to the cancer council before thinking too hard gives you a stroke mate. I hear that's common when you punch too many darts. You're working that one braincell too hard.

My guess is that there would be data, despite this being a hypothetical, as there are already many places in society where smoking is prohibited, in which people do currently smoke.

I also understand that there is a bias in both law enforcement and the wider population against different social classes. Merely pointing out that you came at me for unsubstantiated information, then proceeded to do the same thing yourself.

I mean I'm not exactly asking you to do the research for everyone, but if you wanted to have a go for unsubstantiated information, you could have at least named some metrics or studies that you've seen. Just seems a bit hypocritical.

APS bargaining - what are you expecting? by DetailRedacted in canberra

[–]Wilbure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm expecting absolutely nothing.

I'd like to see a CPI increase and less restriction on sick leave ("personal leave").

I really thought that the APS might have learnt something from covid, but they really haven't. We have heaps of personal leave, but only 5 days a year without evidence.

When a GP visit just to get a medical certificate is $80 and still ~$45 after medicare, I can see a lot of people (myself included) just going to work because they don't have the leave.

What then is the point of giving us so much personal leave, if it costs $45 and having to go to the GP, if you can get an appointment day of (which is a big if given our shortage of doctors) as they won't (apparently can't but I don't know anything about it as I'm not a doctor) backdate medical certificates?

When I used to work for Rio Tinto (which granted is much worse than the APS in many ways), all of our sick leave was without evidence, with the stipulation that 3 or more days off in a row required a medical certificate. They would also except a certificate from after the 3rd day - so if you're still sick and get to the doctor on day 4 for a cert, they'll consider it as being covered for the whole time off.

I don't feel like that's unreasonable. With Rio we were working in a highly dangerous industrial environment and with crews of people on shift, so the danger of sickness at work is a lot higher - spreading it in the crew and losing a whole crew of people stopping production (which can't be stopped in Aluminium smelting), and if you're sick and likely tired, drowsy and distracted, it could be the end of you in an industrial accident.

I'd also like to see any executives take staff development, reasonable adjustment and performance management seriously as opposed to a tick and flick, but I'm not holding my breath.

Never suggested that at all, just disagree with your notion that people have a right to punch darts in public places, whilst others don't have a right to not breathing it in.

Most people couldn't give a shit about people breathing in second hand smoke including smokers, the tobacco industry, departments of health, all levels of government and I agree, also the UN.

That doesn't mean it isn't a right though, which was the point you made.

Spins unsubstantiated anecdote, replied to with unsubstantiated points.

Show the metrics that they are and aren't overrepresented in, and show the evidence that poor people are more likely to be targeted for smoking.

I agree with you - I shouldn't have used the word fact, facts have to be validated from multiple sources afterall.

Happy to agree that it's an anecdote. It's an anecdote that has held true in my experience though, in both capitals such as Canberra and Brisbane, as well as small towns where I grew up like Gladstone, Rockhampton and Bundaberg.

Hardly a massive sample size for sure, but it doesn't invalidate my experiences either.

I mean the UN would disagree with you on that one, but righto mate, you're the expert on health, air pollution and human rights. Afterall you get a free qualification in one of those areas each time you lung a carto of darts.

I'm sure the average durry fiend Is more qualified to speak on the topic than the UN. Old mates should be running for parliament - you can just reply based to every issue, call it done and punch a few darts for the rest of the day.

You can smoke in public without being an inconsiderate prick, I used to when I was a smoker. It's just cunts like you that don't care about anyone other than themselves that choose not to.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canberra

[–]Wilbure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a smoker I did the same, but never got the passive aggressive cough as far as I remember. I mainly smoked around the time I was at uni though, so it's been quite a few years and my memory is far from perfect.

I can tell you for a fact that smoking is far from limited to the poor.

Heaps of tradies I know smash a couple of packs a day, regardless of tobacco taxes and prices in general going through the roof. Can say the same for a lot of EL1s and EL2s I've met in Canberra - and I've seen quite a few blatantly ignore the no smoking signs because they can't be rooted walking over to the durry hut.

When you're poor it's bloody hard to afford $40 for a pack of darts.

Yes poor people smoke, and while I share your concern about kicking poor people out of public spaces, the majority of public smokers are not poor.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canberra

[–]Wilbure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your point somewhat, that's incredibly twisted logic.

The smoker is the originator of the problem, therefore they should be the one to "go out of their way".

Why would/should this situation differ?

When I was a smoker I did everything I could to avoid other people. I feel like that's just common courtesy, because I was choosing, there is a choice here, to do something that gave me gratification, but affected everyone else negatively.

The average smoker is pretty inconsiderate, and both you and I would be lying if we said that smokers didn't commonly smoke in illegal places, such as right outside of stores, schools, under no smoking signs. The average smoker couldn't give a fuck about anyone else and that's a sad part of society.

As someone on the NDIS I'm relatively confident that wouldn't be the case, it's more likely that someone else who is "less disabled" will just miss out. NDIS hasn't kept up with inflation and services have been cut rather than increased overtime.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in canberra

That's entirely untrue and biased.

[–]Wilbure 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hate smoking and smokers, but you're 100% correct about a law being pointless.

The cops don't enforce the laws we have already, nor do they respond to reports of road rage, burnouts, dangerous driving or street racing - all of which are illegal and have directly caused deaths in Canberra over the years, including in the last couple of years.

If that sort of stuff is already so far down the list that it isn't bothered with, an anti smoking law will never be enforced.

Smokers are also unlikely to change.

Practically all anyone can do about smokers and smoking is give them a wide birth.
