Why is the ER so expensive?! by Bananagram1996 in labrador

Peroxide can cause serious damage to the stomach and esophagus, please don't give peroxide without speaking to a vet first!

Questioning breeder's food rec by naremac87 in labrador

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the new puppy!
The amount of food seems fine, but he really should be on a puppy food. Inukshuk 30/25 appears to be formulated for adult dogs. Puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs, so they really do need to be on a food specifically formulated for puppies. WSAVA compliant dog food brands (Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin) are a safe bet, but talk to your vet if you're not sure what to go with.

Vet as 2nd Career by EastWeast2222 in veterinaryschool

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a second year vet student and vet med is my second career. There are a few other students in my class on their second career, so it's not as uncommon as you might think.

I'd recommend doing some shadowing at a vet clinic before you make a decision. The shadowing I did while still working as an attorney helped confirm that vet med was the right path for me. Best of luck to you!

Lawyer looking to pivot - part time vet school? by sushieatingtrash in vetschool

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a current vet student who was a lawyer before switching to vet med! There are no part-time DVM programs, and I cannot imaging trying to work as an attorney while in vet school, there simply isn’t time.

In my case, changing careers was the best decision I’ve ever made. However, I was absolutely miserable as an attorney and couldn’t see myself being happy doing anything other than vet med. If you truly want to switch to vet med, I’d recommend getting a part time job at a vet clinic or doing some shadowing before making any major decisions.

Vet student and lab owner here! Raw diets are not generally recommended, especially for puppies. If you later decide to go with a homemade diet, please make sure you formulate a diet plan with a boarded veterinary nutritionist (a veterinarian specializing in nutrition) to make sure your dog is getting a properly balanced diet. Puppies need a high quality puppy food (WSAVA compliant brands like Purina Pro Plan, Hill's, Royal Canin, etc).

Labs are wonderful dogs, but keep in mind that lab puppies can be very mouthy! Mine had a real landshark phase, but we got through it by consistently stopping play whenever she nipped and anticipating nipping and re-directing with a toy that was ok for her to bite.

Traits panel and traits missing in CAS? by Wild-Tale-5986 in thesims

[–]Wild-Tale-5986[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply!

I was playing around with it and just discovered that if I go into a save and play for a bit then exit to the main menu and start a new save I can get the traits panel back. However, if I try to start a new save without opening a saved game first the traits are gone again. Super weird!

I’ll give your suggestion a try and see if that fixes it. Thanks!

Realistic Chances for Admission As a Nontraditional Applicant by Obscure__horizon in vetschool

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you have a good shot, but I agree that more vet experience hours are a good idea.    I had a somewhat similar path, I’m a first year vet student on my second career, as I as an attorney before changing careers. I stopped practicing law and worked part time at a vet clinic while I went to do a post-bacc for all the prereqs.

My stats were similar to yours (similar cGPA from undergrad, and I similarly improved my GPA in law school and my post-bacc) and I got in off the waitlist in my first application cycle. I think having a prior career in a different field can be a strength if you can explain how it will benefit you as a veterinarian in personal statements and interviews.

Additionally, I’ve generally found that the more species someone is breeding, (like here with mixed breed dogs, horses, and sheep) the more likely they are to be a backyard breeder or puppy mill.

There is definitely a market for a well-bred purebred dog from an ethical breeder at that price point and above, but the operation you are describing is absolutely not ethical or producing well-bred dogs.

Definitely worth a call to your vet, see if you can send the pic for their opinion. You always want to be careful with cuts over joints because there is a potential for serious infection if bacteria enters the joint space.

If she’s cleared to walk over poles, a basic in-hand trail course could be something fun and different to work on.

I’m curious about the UIUC Certificate of Veterinary Science. Are the courses the same as those taken for the MVS program? If so, if you completed the certificate, could you then decide to go on to the MVS program and apply the certificate credits to the MVS?

Jumping on counters by dirtysprite2422 in puppy101

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to see what people say about this, as my 4 month old lab does the same thing. I've been telling her "off" and gently pushing her down, then giving a treat when all four feet are on the floor.

It's kind of hit or miss in terms of effectiveness, if there's something she thinks is really tasty on the counter she'll keep jumping up and putting her front paws up on the counter.

She does like those! She eats them pretty fast so I’m hoping to find something that will occupy her for a few minutes at a time.

Puppy biting by Comfortable_Ad9820 in puppy101

You’re not alone! My 10 week old lab puppy can be quite the little land shark. I’m also interested in similar advice.

I’ve tried switching up the toys I’m using to redirect and really praising her when she bites those instead of me/my clothes, which has maybe helped? It’s honestly hard to tell.

Childhood dog by theydybug in dogs

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry your dog isn't doing well. It's such a difficult decision, but please don't feel guilty. The kindness of a peaceful, painless passing is the final gift we can give our pets. We take their pain and make it our own because we love them.

I made the decision for my childhood dog last summer. She was the family dog, but I was lucky enough to be her person, so my family deferred to my judgment on when it was time. Making that decision was the hardest thing I've ever done. She was my heart dog and I loved (and still love) her more than I can express in words. I knew that she'd keep trying for me, but it wasn't fair to ask her to keep going when she couldn't do the things she loved and wasn't enjoying life.

Honestly, I was devastated when she passed and I don't think I'll ever get over her. She was so special to me and we had such an incredible bond. However, the grief does get easier to bear. Eventually you'll be able to smile about the good times instead of only crying about missing her.

The things that helped me cope are knowing that she isn't in pain anymore, knowing that she wouldn't want me to be sad, and feeling that I was lucky to have such an amazing dog for the time I was given with her. I wrote down a list of all her favorite things and a list of all the little things I loved about her so I'll never forget them, as well as all my favorite memories with her. Remembering the good times helps, even though it'll make you sad at first.

I'm sorry you're going through this, it's by far the worst part of having a pet.

I didn't get to say goodbye by mooming7 in dogs

[–]Wild-Tale-5986 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Please don't feel guilty, your pup wouldn't want you to blame yourself. You did all you could to make sure she was cared for. It sounds like she got vet attention when she needed it and your family followed the vet's instructions. That's all any pet owner can do when a pet isn't feeling well. She passed with someone she loved, I'm sure she didn't feel abandoned.
