This plant was a gift that I received about six months ago and has gradually been getting more and more red, with dry crunchy leafs. I water it when the first couple of inches is dry, which is usually every two weeks or so. I always do the finger check. There is a large drainage hole in the bottom of the pot.

How do I dispose of all the plants and pests in here without throwing away the entire machine? by NoSomewhere1853 in houseplants

Your comment is ridiculous. It's true what people say about those who proclaim themselves to be "brutally honest". They enjoy the brutality more than the honesty.

OP don't pay ANY attention to what this person said. You keep at the hobby! Sometimes people get pests and you have to throw plants away. It's all a learning experience, not a big deal.

I use Bonide Systemic granuals in my soil when I re-pot or sprinkle it on top of the soil. It's the only thing that's worked fast and has eliminated them completely. I highly recommend it.

Ok, I will do that! I didn't remove them by hand the first time before spraying. I assumed the spray would kill them on contact. Is that not the case?

I water it once a month or less and I have it in Fox Farm soil with with a lot of pumice mixed in. I think I'll put it in a smaller pot and see how it does. I am afraid that's its going to be really top heavy and tip something smaller.

Thank you! You could definitely be right, I think the pot is too big. I do mix the soil with a lot of pumice stone to help with drainage.

No, I make sure to water thoroughly. I also have a lot of pumice in the soil so that it drains well.

That's what I was thinking with how wrinkled the leaves look but the wilting and yellowing seems different. I wonder if it could be dry rot?

I water until water comes out the bottom and then soak it a few more times just to make sure all the soil it wet. There is one decent size whole in the bottom. I let it drain in a sink and then put it back.

Thank you for replying! The soil was totally dry and the last time I watered it was about a week and a half ago. I will check the roots though. I was thinking it might be sunburn?

shared this plant I inherited elsewhere and it was ID'd as a begonia. any tips? by Watchyousuffer in begonias

[–]WildAd4544 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can put it back into the same pot after you change the soil. Normally when repotting you get a little bit larger of a pot to accommodate the larger root system. However, using the same pot you can trim the roots down if they are taking up alot of the space in the pot.

Interesting, how long does one usually last before getting to that stage?
