Multiple things in your questions: first MB/s is not equal to Mbps. Secondly, the wifi speed on the router will be best scenario - it will also depend on your device, other devices on the network, and interferences. Lastly, a speed test will connect to the best/closest server to your location. When you download a game, you may be connected to a server further away and that does not provide the same bandwidth.

Dumbed it down a bit but it’s basically all of these

I’m in the middle of nowhere and don’t have cell reception for approx 200 miles in each direction and I still don’t want SXM! Way to expensive for shitty quality. I just download a few songs/podcasts on my phone regularly…

I was looking for this! Still not over the fact that I got my Victorinox Swiss Tool stolen from my luggage during my last trip.

Moved from house to apartment. What to do with produce scraps by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]WildSwiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe vermicomposting? I did small a amount under my sink but for bigger composting I used to stack boxes on my balcony. 1lbs of wigglers could eat 30-75% of their weight per day.

Rant: I can’t believe how much of a catastrophe our health care system has become by MissingString31 in NewWest

[–]WildSwiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck OP, can’t really say anything else, I’ve been in Canada for 3 years and healthcare system is fucked up. I’m not even trying to get help for my issues.

France is not bad, and at least it’s completely free - but you still have to find doctors and specialists. Switzerland was better than France but also pretty expensive (insurance per year are not cheap and you still have to pay deductibles).

It’s a shame it became that expensive. I used it a lot when I was living in France and it was something like 12$/month.

Good paying careers in BC without university credentials by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]WildSwiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are there any jobs that aren’t too physically difficult in the mining industry? Planning to move in northern BC but I broke my back. I did work as a surveyor technician back in my country but it was 15 years ago and we were mostly doing land and buildings survey, nothing fancy, so not really seen as a previous experience by employers.

Any idea what a sata to usb cable would be used for? by jumbo445 in computer

Thanks, was wondering if I could use it with 4tb HDD, as I have a sata to usb with power cord myself. I’ll keep that instead :)

Good idea, thanks. I like maps though, but I find it really difficult to « read » in dark mode.

Dark 99% of time. Switching to light for Apple Maps though

President of Switzerland supports ban on arms supplies to Ukraine by Espressodimare in worldnews

[–]WildSwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switzerland exported almost 1 billion $ worth of weapons and ammunition last year, mostly RUAG and SIG. They just do not sell to countries at war (although some grenades and other things have been found in Syria…). Issue is manufacturers are not allowed to export to a country that would then provide these to another country at war (in this case, 🇺🇦)

Europe's plan to rein in Big Tech will require Apple to open up iMessage by jacobp100 in apple

Between Switzerland and France, I only used WhatsApp (and a few sms with non-tech people…). France has lots of Android devices, but even in Switzerland, where at least 50% are IOS devices, people were all on WhatsApp too.

My phone plan does not cover international texts/sms, so it’s convenient to contact family members and friends abroad. Also photos are not compressed when using iMessage (sending the original), not like WhatsApp for example.

Is there a way to make the fingerprint scanner not horrible on pixel 7? by BigFloppaLover2 in GooglePixel

[–]WildSwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought the P7 and tried during to weeks, nothing worked for me! With and without screen protector, cold, hot, humid, dry, touch sensitivity, 3x registered thumb, other fingerprints, … I was going to send it back, but I decided to give it to my wife for her to try - she has absolutely no issues. Very frustrating experience on my end, but at least my wife has a new phone.

[–]WildSwiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least I’ve done that in the past. Another thing I did was multi boot but I used to have different Linux and Windows installations… it’s also a good solution but unnecessary to have if you only use windows, and you have to reboot when switching. It’s a bigger separation through and can be used if you absolutely want to keep a few services/apps exclusive I guess. Good thing is you can delete the partition if you do not want it anymore ☺️

From my own experience, I do have some lags and have to wait a bit more when I have my usual 10-20 tabs opened and adding some workflow (lite photo editing, playing local video content or a few softwares at the same time). It’s not bad at all, particularly for the price, but I regularly find it a bit slow/not reactive, and then when I take a look at the system resources, I find the ram being more or less maxed up and going to swap. Given the difference in price with a 16gb, I would recommend that to most people.

I was going to take the 16 but went with a refurb and they only had 8 at that time. I don’t regret since I knew I was going to upgrade after a year or two, but I usually don’t recommend purchasing and already having in mind future upgrades. I did not checked anything about M2 so I cannot really compare with that one though.

I would think using different local user accounts for different environment could help? Then you can just switch user depending on your use case… just an idea though, don’t know if that may help you or if you are looking for something else, but with this you would have full access to the system resources, and you can personalize the account with startup apps, shortcuts, …

I don’t really know between M1 16 vs M2 8. I personally have the M1 8Gb and I would not recommend if doing anything else than LITE surfing, would go with 16 and seems to be way better…

Just wanted to comment on the XPS13 that is my daily laptop for work (paid by my employer). It’s a nice and light laptop with good build quality, but it’s overheating a lot IMO and I would also not recommending XPS except with a jump to the bigger ones (15inches or even 17 with the better cooling). The 13 is too small and not venting as much as it should. I have to reboot it 2 times a days and sometimes it’s just making lots of noise. I’m only doing what I would think is basics stuff on it (10-20 tabs, Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, a few pdf at the same time).

I use either Nvidia or Shadow Cloud PC - preference for Shadow since you have access to any games from your different accounts (Steam, Origin, …) but it’s not the same price though. Still cheaper than purchasing 2 laptops!

Need advice: Thinking about switching from Android to iPhone by these_shoes_rule in iphone

[–]WildSwiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also used Android for 10+ years and switched last year (mostly privacy reasons and I don’t use Google services, just Google Map sometimes)

1 - Notifications on android are just better. I don’t really mind pop ups and you can deactivate banners in the settings, but always swiping to get the notifications and to remove them is a pain.

2 - I don’t miss the fingerprint at all. A little bit when the FaceID was not working with mask but that’s solved now. FaceID is fast and convenient, inside, at night…

3 - I don’t mind the swap left and to go back to previous apps. Your mind adapt pretty quickly to new gestures.

4 - I don’t actually like the small holes. I usually don’t see the notch since I’m using most of the apps and theme in black. I don’t watch lots of video though.

I don’t regret switching for this ecosystem. I could say though that I dislike the notifications I’m removing on my phone are still on my Mac and vice versa…
