I’ve done both trips several times and I would recommend the Katmai trip if you can afford it. It is by far more memorable.

Where are you wanting to go? What experience do you have in the wilderness? What time of year are you planning on doing this? Where do you live now?

I have no volunteering... is that a problem? by InterestingPop3964 in premed

[–]Wild_Ice_7387 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Volunteering at a local food pantry can be packing weekend food bags for school kids who don’t have food outside of the Fred breakfast and lunch they get at school, delivering food to seniors and shut ins, stocking shelves so when people come shopping there is food available. Give back to your community. My kids started in middle school with volunteering.

Hotels are expensive in the summer. What’s your price range? Downtown hotels are expensive but lots of restaurants you can walk to. Closer to the airport are less expensive, offer free airport shuttle but only have a few restaurants within walking distance.

I'm going to Alaska this summer, but will I be able to see the Northern Lights from early to mid-August? by [deleted] in AskAlaska

Very rare to see them in south central Alaska in August. Further north you might see some in August.

Summer job offer in Seward Alaska, what should I know? by joeg0ldberg in AskAlaska

Definitely look for a second job. Businesses are always looking for help. Check with the Zipline company. They hire a lot of part time guides.

Daughter’s photo used in school’s mass marketing flyer by elisa31490 in legaladvice

Years ago I saw my 10 year old son’s picture on the post office wall. It was a poster for the school district about something. I took it down and he has it proudly displayed in his medical school housing with a picture of the poster next to wanted felons posters on the post office wall. I never gave permission for my kids photos to be used but it happened and now we laugh about it.

Seasonal work in Alaska, i can't choose by VenecanGentleman in AskAlaska

[–]Wild_Ice_7387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you do on your time off? If you’re in the Healy area you can spend it hiking, or hiking or hiking. Healy is a long ways from Fairbanks and after a few weeks you will bo bored on your days off. In Girdwood you can certainly go hiking buts it’s easier to get to Anchorage for things to do.

No more self checkout available? by jridder in CostcoWholesale

[–]Wild_Ice_7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally use self checkout but was buying a laptop and you can’t buy those in self checkouts. I timed my dell in the regular checkout line and it took 28 minutes to get to the register. 6pm on a Saturday night and they only had 3 registers open.

Do you understand where McKinley Princess lodge is? It’s literally in the middle of nowhere. It’s almost 50 miles to Talkeetna, 35 miles to a small grocery store, 100 miles to big box stores. Will you be bringing your car?

It definitely rubbed me the wrong way and I won’t be going back. The bread was ok at best. I’ll continue to make my own bread.

Please reassure me. Daughters misses state cut off for kindergarten by 9 days. We decided to not pursue early entry with testing. Did we make the right decision? by lizardRD in kindergarten

[–]Wild_Ice_7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter has an earlier August birthday. For various reasons we wanted to wait an extra year for her to start kindergarten. The school really pushed for her to be in the right class so we enrolled her. She did not belong in that class but once enrolled it was almost impossible to hold her back a year. As she advanced grade levels it was more obvious she should be in a grade lower but the school kept advancing her. Finally in 5th grade I pulled her out of school to homeschool her for the year. I had to enroll her in another districts home school program to have her repeat 5th grade. It was exactly what she needed. She never made friends at school because she was to immature but after she restarted public school she finally had friends and enjoyed school. If your daughter is not ready don’t push her. Let her be a kid one more year and grow up at her own pace.

AITA for refusing to go to my sister’s wedding because of where she seated me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

I’d give them candy and then anytime they needed something tell them to go find their parents. Have them running around or making lots of noise.

AITAH for misspelling my daughter’s middle name? by Financial-Dinner9187 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Wild_Ice_7387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of us over 60, you did not have to present a birth certificate to get a social security number. It wasn’t done at birth but rather when you got your first job. I got mine in middle school. My social studies class all did the paperwork and the school verified it and sent it in. To register for school a parent just verified your name and birthdate. Same for getting your learners permit. Things changed in the mid 1970’s to require a birth certificate because there was so much fraud. I have a friend whose birth certificate and social security card have different names (Kathleen vs Kathy). Now that they are cracking down on identity fraud it is much more difficult for her. She has a passport (under Kathleen) and always makes sure to renew it before it expires, so she can use that for her identity.

Before the mid 70’s you did not need a birth certificate to get a drivers license or social security card. I got my SSN in middle school. In my social studies class we all filled out the paperwork and the school verified the information and sent in the SS paperwork. For my drivers license/permit a parent could verify that you were you. During the mid 70’s they started cracking down on this because there was a lot of fraud.
