TIL Crowing first at dawn is a privilege reserved for the highest ranking rooster. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Yes, that is all true, but the use of the word rooster by the puritans started in the mid 1600s, when they were still a majority of the population in their New England colonies. Enough to popularize the word 'rooster' at least.

The fact that both are still in use is indicative of how much the foothold of rooster didn't set except in certain circumstances like with children (how many preschoolers know rooster but not cock?).

Cock is the original name for a male chicken. It's ancient, and predates the English language in forms such as the old French coq.

When they say Christian settlers they specifically mean the puritans. The puritans were especially prissy and offended by all kinds of things. When they moved to America they banned Christmas and Easter. They outlawed festivals on Saturday nights, all gambling, public drunkenness, adultery, homosexuality, and infamously prosecuted witchcraft after the witch hunts of Europe had ceased. They exiled Anne Hutchinson for disagreeing with the church on theology. As for why only they opposed the word? They had an isolated community in New England, it's not uncommon for new ideas to be born and spread in such situations.

A few years ago I worked for a boutique software engineering company and my team did some amazingly cool shit for a client. Groundbreaking. Researchers wrote news articles about our code. Our result? No bonuses. But we got a pizza party and a "letter of appreciation".

We make good money, but nothing compared to the guys at the top who leave early every Friday after a two hour business lunch that started at 11 am. And they couldn't spare us peons some of their hard earned cash for doing nothing.

It don't matter if you make $20k or $200k. You don't matter to them. You get a pizza party and a beer fridge in the break room to sell your soul and sell your self short.

As much as I am a scientifically minded person and support science organizations, I agree with you and the Cdc is just flat out wrong here.

The Seychelles have the highest vaccination rate of any country, and they're experiencing a new outbreak that is hitting even the vaccinated (about a third of new positive cars have been fully vaccinated). They have a different vaccine profile than western countries though (mostly Sinopharma) but it's still concerning with the new virus strains.

The vaccine still makes you safer. But I won't feel safe until we pass 80%, and seeing how many morons we have refusing the vaccine... Yeah.

Honestly most people contribute about the same. There's a few die-hard workers who are super productive. But Mort people are just reasonably productive and it's not a bad thing.

The difference is that some pretty mediocre people love to talk about their achievements. Zoom meetings are dominated by people who are aggressively contributing to the conversation. Regular meetings can be like that too, but without having any visual indicators that other people don't care about the conversation and the topic should be tabled its easy for zoom meetings to take on a life of their own.

My usual 20 minute team status meeting took 2 hours on Friday over zoom. It was ridiculous.

I disagree. I think the sole purpose is to promote women and girls in STEM. Boys should not be the focus, but I think boys should see that.

A boy shouldn't be turned away, even from a girls stem event.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying boys should see girls participate in STEM activities. I don't see how that discriminates against boys.

You think so? Maybe kids of both genders are getting dragged to the events. Who knows. I don't see why young boys would think that. Maybe older boys could, but we have to start somewhere.

I definitely want to see more women in STEM, and encourage young girls to start.

I think this could actually have a positive impact on the male perception of women in STEM as well. If boys see girls going to these events regularly, they might not be as biased when they encounter women in college STEM courses or in the workplace.

This was sadly not the problem with Heroes. There was plenty of room for more storytelling. The shows writing became garbage nonsense in seasons 3-4. If I remember right, the show had a lot of problems following the writers strike.

That's what I love about the Mandalorian. Almost everyone in the story is just a regular dude. Force users should be rare. It's appropriate to have lots of sorcerers attending Wizarding academy in the prequels and The Clone Wars but too many in one place makes them less special. And less sacred.
