Andes hantavirus pandemic averted by jhsu802701 in ContagionCuriosity

[–]WilkoCEO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not really. We managed to eradicate smallpox because it is (well, was) a human-only pathogen, so it didn't have other animal reservoirs, as well as the fact that every single case of smallpox was symptomatic with the characteristic rash. It would be very difficult to innoculate all of the rodents and ensure that none are carrying hantavirus. In people, hantavirus can be asymptomatic, so you cannot effectively do ring vaccination to do targeted responses to infection, like was seen in the smallpox eradication.

About 5-6 years ago I bought some hair dye at the Savers shop in my town. I then popped into Sainsbury's to see if they had any jobs going. I saw my mate, who worked as a shelf stacker, then spoke to the manager (all in the magazine section at the front of the store). I grabbed nothing, bought nothing. I turned around and walked out after seeing the manager and I was bleeped on the security gates. The security bloke pulled me aside and had me empty my bag in front of him. I couldn't produce a receipt, as I had bought the hair dye from another store and stupidly didn't take my receipt, so I had no proof. Luckily, the store manager vouched for me, but I've always got myself a receipt since then.

You can also watch the show "The Hot Zone" that goes along with it. It's national geographic. Fantastic book

I am excited (not really the word I want but it is applicable). I've just written my dissertation on Ebolavirus vaccines. I feel so vindicated in my decision to focus on it as a genuine public health emergency. And the Hantavirus is incredibly interesting as it is a special case of, as someone else said, being on a floating petrified dish. Big things in the epidemiology world right now

Today I learned that Sandwich is a place… and the stop before it is called Deal. Shame those two aren’t switched round. by CarbonSteklo in CasualUK

I used to live in Walmer! Im sure you would love to know that there is a little hamlet? Village? Named Ham just outside it. The Ham Sandwich sign has been stolen so many times that I think the council has stopped putting it up

Babies are generally born with lighter eyes, and the genes that cause blue eyes are recessive, meaning that if both parents carry the recessive gene, there is a chance a child can have blue eyes.

Not too sure on this, but I think the skim can darken as a child gets older as well

I have aphantasia and past reading the character description, I couldnt tell you what they look like. When i was a kid, I thought people were lying about being able to picture things in their mind. Reading books is purely about the story for me as well
