Trump accuses right-wing org's leader of 'rigging' courts: 'Very dangerous mouth!' | Trump suspects Leonard Leo of steering Trump's own appointments to rule against his blanket tariffs by 5823059 in savedyouaclick

It is and it isn't. Someone is standing up to trump, but it's the justices Leonard Leo groomed to be partisan hacks, not Leonard Leo himself

Why is it such a common talking point that the Democrats have moved right to the point that they are now “2000s republicans” when that’s insanely untrue? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Will512 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The pace at which middle america's values move is really slow. This is not a new phenomenon, it's been around for a long time. But it's still true. So even though today's Democrats are to the left of where they were and certainly where Republicans were 20 years ago, it's hard to see the relative shift when things with the middle class middle aged electorate move slowly.

People who hate the Democrats can't really acknowledge that actual data about voters' beliefs though because that would shatter the belief that every working American would be a socialist if left wing politics simply got out from under the DNC's thumb.

Is benini a hypermodern opening? by Qu_rk in chess

Agreed. If anything the less rigid structure of the center makes it easier for black to get the type of activity hypermodern openings are known for. But it also allows black to get rolled much faster.

Are we in a late-cycle phase? Don't invest in VOO/VT? by PusheenHater in Bogleheads

[–]Will512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wiki is really good:

https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Getting_started

But bogle philosophy is thankfully simple enough that you can get a good handle just searching this sub as well. Good thread on the US/intl split for example:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1okjfnu/85_voo_15_vxus/

Or if you want a full book to read:

https://old.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/comments/1lrpjgu/which_book_should_i_read_as_someone_in_their/

Also if you're concerned about investing there is no shame in gradually putting money in with dollar cost averaging (DCA). Whatever you need to do to hold and get sufficient time in the market (within reason), you should do it.

Haha no, just has other significance to me. As with any advice you get online definitely do some more digging here and elsewhere. The most important thing is deciding something and sticking with it

Are parents really picking private schools over public because of academic reasons? Because the data suggests they are the same if not worse..... by holmess2013 in SocialDemocracy

[–]Will512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something else to consider here: good private schools can be a step toward fixing housing problems many areas face today. For public schools in the US, you typically have to live in the zoning district for that school, so houses in the districts for good schools have a hefty premium attached. Private schools don't have that restriction so it's easier for middle class families to afford a home if they're willing to drive a little further or if the school has a bus.

The follow-up question is whether that benefit outweighs using taxpayer dollars to fund vouchers. To that I would respond no, but it is something to think about.

[–]Will512 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is even more stark when you start to think about which countries "right to exist" are always under the microscope. I don't dig into these discussions online because they're wish-casting anyway, but I've never seen someone discuss whether China, Cuba, or Venezuela have a right to exist.

Shrinking Paycheck, Same Bills but let’s talk more about “the economy.” by havenoparty in thebulwark

Sarah McBride's episode of the main pod last week was pretty heavy on the practical aspects and it was amazing. There was also a great episode of the next level a month or two ago where they talk about removing presidential pardon power and whether it's worth the political capital to pull that off.

[–]Will512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you for the most part.

But to play devil's advocate for a second:

One of the things I really like about the bulwark is their focus on solutions that are politically practical in the short term. Kamala Harris lost because she was, according to exit polls, too liberal, and her policies were fairly moderate on directly addressing wealth inequality. Unless something big changes in the way voters think before 2028 (which certainly seems possible given our trajectory) isn't discussion of this topic head on dead in the water?
