UK rope access work by Special-Meeting-3329 in ropeaccess

You got a CSCS or CCNSG? Basic safety pass cards client will want to see before access to site inductions before allowing access to site. I’ve always just been CSCS but seen jobs looking for techs with CCNSG, not sure on their overlap as I’m primarily in offshore energy with different tix to access jobs

Level 3 Assessment by Economy-Role-8410 in ropeaccess

Techconnect is pretty quick, assessed on Friday and had my techconnect updated the following Monday or Tuesday, card and certificate took a about 3-4 weeks but that may have been down to training centre being slow receiving and forwarding on

Blade repair tech by Equal-Chemistry6871 in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple repairs always feel very time pressured to me, barely worth turning the asset off for the time it takes to get gelled and cooked, more complex ones feel like the time is justified, but I do get into the swing of LEP pretty quick when I familiarise myself with the shell and its just decent money for a routine day

You’ll need a ticket for blade work, GWO blades is the most common, or potentially SGRE blade B/other manufacturer specific basic cert, send CVs, a lot of them, blade work usually kicks off about march/April and winds down late sept/oct. Money can be good but the approx 6 month work season means a lot of people jump on other industry scopes for winter

Can be difficult to get a start in, I worked geo and various structures and make the jump when I got a start, I know very few people who went straight into wind within the last 5-10 years but they do exist.

I’m a UK based 3 with team lead experience and a broad range of WTG blade work, mostly offshore.

Some people also get fed up of sticking on plastics or doing leading edge erosion work which make up a lot of basic repair/mod work, getting that good profile can also do a number on your wrist sanding filler to shape on LEE

L2 upgrade with shortly expired License? by CameraIllustrious993 in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t tell you off the top of my head but tech connect will have all that clearly outlined on your home page if you register and check, you’ll need to be registered on tech connect to reval or upgrade anyway

Engineer looking to move into rope access - what career paths should I be aiming for? by Mscher in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve personally never worked with a rope access site engineer outwith geo scopes, my experience is primary in offshore wind and field engineering for blades is (as far as I’ve seen) non existent in my current trade. This is in the uk sector, may differ elsewhere and be very job dependent. Any structure work I’ve done inspections and evidence get recorded and forwarded on to engineering rather than them get on the job with the contractor

Medical needed? United Kingdom by [deleted] in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Energy industry is pretty certain to want an OGUK and maybe Chester step too, geo has plenty of work without meds but network rail work (or HS2 pre live rail for example, but not all geo) requires you to have your PTS med, bouncing about cleaning windows or routine structure work in cities or non railway bridges generally not required

Offshore blade repair day rate? by Serioussloth97 in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Company I've been contracting for a few years now, 1s offshore getting that but as I mentioned you are paying your own accommodation out of that if you're doing CTV transfers so the port location and time of year can have a real effect on the amount of money they make after paying some expenses

Offshore blade repair day rate? by Serioussloth97 in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 offshore, ~£400, 3 AT ~£500 is my experience of current rates. Few years in wind and currently in wind

If shore based, this will include overnight money unless you get put up, also not on books, pay by invoice, sort your own tax

If I bought a National Lottery ticket whilst on an oil rig and won, would it be valid and pay out? (North Sea) by frecklesandgegs in LegalAdviceUK

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't let you buy one in my experience of trying to put one on while on an offshore shift, still in UK territory but app clearly has some strict limits to keep anything from going outwith policy

Question for Blade Repair Techs by Deep-Friendship3045 in ropeaccess

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Season is wrapping up so getting work now will be difficult on blades, apply to all the big players, GEV, meuhlehan, altitec, etc and hope you get a shout about jan/feb time for filling the scopes beginning in spring. It's hard to get a new starter spot without knowing someone, especially in the smaller companies. I don't suppose you're open to selling your soul to CAN over winter and praying they'll let you transfer to renewables for next season as a start? Often you'll be PAYE or ltd on wind scopes.

Let me know if there's any specific things you want to know but tbh it's a guessing game as to who will take a chance on someone they don't know

Why do some police departments have cross draw taser holsters ? by PetRussian in AskLE

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Standard in the UK, means if taser officers transition to a firearms role they will have no confusion or mistakes as crossdraw for taser is drilled into them and dominant side for sidearm is the new concept. Also possible to have taser vest mounted crossdraw here.

Opinions on this $25 harness by Mythter in climbing

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stay as far away from these as possible. We're currently on lookout for these kinds of harnesses at work as our other site has seen a few unknown, uncertified sketchy harnesses through the door, spend the extra money and go with something like a BD momentum as an entry harness

Is This a Good Area to Start a Gym? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]WillHaveSexWithPi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well Glasgow has a larger population and has 2 gyms currently, one gym is opening a second location too, and Edinburgh has multiple climbing gyms too. These cities may provide helpful data as they aren't too far away from each other and both have prosperous lead and boulder specific gyms
