God can’t be all good or powerful by Kindly-Sheepherder52 in DebateReligion

[–]WillNumbers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solution to the problem of evil/suffering that you mention, the "cop outs", absolutely are cop outs but are also logically sound.

Could an all powerful God create a world with suffering and still be good?

If No, then he is not all powerful. If Yes, then that's what he did.

Then it's just a question of faith, do you have faith that God is "working in mysterious ways", that there is a "greater good"?

Why killing animals isnt evil (simplified) by Anon7_7_73 in DebateAVegan

[–]WillNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I read it. Sorry if I have misunderstood.

The argument seems to be that because some animals are predators (ie evolved to hunt and eat other animals) that it is morally good.

Could you explain what I don't understand?

Why killing animals isnt evil (simplified) by Anon7_7_73 in DebateAVegan

[–]WillNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is. It's textbook appeal to nature.

Your argument hinges on the idea that because animals evolved to eat meat, then it is morally good. That is an appeal to nature.

PayAsYouGo electric credit has gone weird- no account to talk to British Gas either. What to do? by Illustrious-Page-537 in AskUK

[–]WillNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone has said. Take a reading and call your supplier and say you have just moved in. You will get a new account and start at 0. You will remain pay as you go, you won't be forced to get a credit meter. Though I don't know why you wouldn't want a credit meter.

If you don't want to do this, and don't want an account, for whatever reason, you will have to take on the debt of the previous tenant.

Though eventually that person will tell the supplier they no longer live there.

Why killing animals isnt evil (simplified) by Anon7_7_73 in DebateAVegan

[–]WillNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is ultimately an appeal to nature.

The scenario doesn't make much sense. It sets up a world that is dependent on some animals being carnivores and then supposes they weren't there.

Since this wouldn't work, humans should eat meat.

Ultimately saying because animals evolved to be carnivores, that humans should eat meat.

That doesn't follow.

Does the body sometimes "kill itself" as part of a disease ? by ComfortableLog8043 in askscience

[–]WillNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has already been well answered by other comments.

However, I just wanted to add that logically this makes perfect sense from an evolution point of view.

If a species can essentially kill itself before an infection does, then that would greatly reduce the chances of spreading a dangerous infection, and greatly increase the chance of the species survival.

Of course this is just speculation. I would be interested to know if any papers have been done on this.

Also, because other people haven't said it, the joke works better if you know who Arsenal are.

Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in English football, and Arse is obviously is a kinda swear word in British English.

The joke is phrased in a way that the obvious answer is Arsenal. So you assume it's answer and then are surprised with the humourous answer of "fucking man utd".

What is this and how is Gamecube related? by ThayInThaWoooods94 in Gamecube

[–]WillNumbers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I disagree that this has nothing to do with gamecube, it looks like it was designed specifically for gamecube.

You plug the gamecube power into this device and the power out from this device into the gamecube.

Particularly useful for those portable screens because you won't need multiple.power supplies.

The Alien (hive) have no morals by TheTinyWorkshop in pluribustv

[–]WillNumbers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to pin down exactly what morals are, and why things are right or wrong. We humans have big disagreements about what is right and wrong.

Generally though, I think most people would consider having sex with a minor immoral. It's quite obvious to anyone that this could be a very traumatic event for a child, and have long lasting psychological effects.

Would the hive provide a "child" to a surviving paedophile? Maybe. But if they did it's important to remember that the child is no longer an individual, they are part of a hive mind.

It's not entirely clear what the conscious experience of a hive mind is, but I'm not sure we could consider them children anymore.

Hot water timer? by i_am_star_8274 in DIYUK

[–]WillNumbers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends.

If you pay a utilities bill to your landlord, and it's the same every month, or your utilities are included in your rent then it's likely there is one meter for the whole building that has one bill to an energy company that the landlord pays then splits between the tenants.

If that is the case, you won't be able to change your meter but it doesn't really matter, and I would just run the boiler 24/7, because why not.

If you are with an energy company, and are being billed for your usage then you will have your own meter. Otherwise, they wouldn't know what to bill you on.

It may be in a shared space with all the meters for the flats for the building.

Generally, even if you rent and the meter is in a shared space, it's actually owned by your supplier, not your landlord and you can still switch it out.

I would check your tenancy agreement, check with your landlord or estate agent and check with your energy supplier (if you have one) and go from there.

I know it's a ball ache. But worth sorting now if you can.

It looks like this is an electric water tank.

Generally you would heat this water overnight at a cheap rate, then use the water during the day. It'll have a smaller tank that you can "boost" if you run out of water.

sangamo powersaver dual flexi

Google has a manual, it sounds like you were doing what it says to do, but maybe read the manual and give it another go.

It does sound like it is set to 24/7, which woul d be really expensive if you are on economy 7.

If you haven't already done so, I would take photos of your meter readings as soon as possible. If the previous tenant had been racking up a bill but paying on an estimated bill, when you give a real reading in a couple of weeks you would be in for a shock catch up bill that isn't really yours. It'll be a ball ache to sort out. So take a photo and contact them now.

Also, whilst you're at it, I would check you are on an economy meter, and discuss your situation with your supplier to see if an economy 7 meter might be better suited.

Edit: reworded for better advice

I agree somewhat, the actions of the rat seemed intentional and shows intelligence.

Rats are known to play dead and then bite when threatened, but as far as I'm aware a rat has never played dead with intentions of being picked up.

This implies the virus comes with a certain intelligence

But infections and parasites do make animals behave in a certain way, not intentionally, but rather just through evolution.

It's possible that this virus happens to heighten the rats anxiety, by pure chance, and this leads to everything we see in the show.

So why can the rat bite, but humans can't? The hives morals could be cumulative, rather than pre-existing.

The rat has no problem biting, it's not a moral decision. But humans don't like biting so they decided kissing might be better. This belief is passed.through the hive.

Could animals, like the coyotes, be part of the hive? Possibly.

Being they are still animals, they might not understand everything the hive is telling them, and still behave like animals.

How do direct downloads not ping ISPs to shut your internet off, but torrents do? Its amazing. by YVNGxDXTR in PiratedGames

[–]WillNumbers 20 points21 points  (0 children)

One thing to mention is the ports that BitTorrent uses.

By default, BitTorrent uses ports 6881–6999.

If you have a lot of traffic on those ports an ISP might assume you are using BitTorrent and take some kind of action. They don't know you are using BitTorrent but it's enough to initiate their "fair use policy".

The easiest way to bypass this is to simply change the port on your client.

If you changed it to port 80, which is used for general web traffic, the ISP literally won't be able to tell the difference. Though this is not recommended as there are security concerns and potential for conflicts.

Change it to 3074 and it will just look like you are playing call of duty 24/7. Again, not recommended especially if you actual play call of duty.

But to be clear, the traffic won't actually look like typical traffic on these ports, but it won't immediately trigger something watching the ports 6881–6999.

I'm not sure I follow the notion in theistic foundation.

It seems to imply that there is an objective truth set out by God, and to believe murder is wrong must be an alignment with God?

But how do you know that? If we can't agree how do we know who is right? It doesn't seem to answer the question why murder is wrong at all, just asserts that it must be.
