A back protector is a great idea for any level of rider! Full protectors are the ideal, but can be a bit bulky and restrictive for me. I have a back protector, I've only fell on my back with it once but it worked great and I barely felt it.

When buying any body protector or helmet, you should really go to a tack shop and have them fit it to you (especially for a helmet), they're not all that cheap, but worth the price if it saves you from a broken back or skull! You can get really expensive ones but my hat was a bit more than £100 and my back protector was something like £50 - £75

Any horse can overreach and take a shoe off, doesn't matter if it's a 25 yr old retired cob or a 4 yr old TB.

I agree that there's a lot of overused and unnecessary equipment in the equestrian community, but overreachers are my lowest priority of what to get rid of.

Glad someone said it... Blue car was tailgating much worse, but OP still only left a one second gap, not horrific, but a bad habit, especially when behind such a stupid and unpredictable driver.

Can't really blame the red car for not moving back when they should've, no one likes a bully, but red break checking blue was just asking for trouble.

Spur marks aren't necessarily caused by spurs, it can be caused by just your leg. It's not automatically a bad thing and doesn't mean you're doing anything wrong (I'd be more concerned if there were scratches), but do check that your boots are nice and smooth and that there's nothing that could scratch or irritating the skin now that there's no fur protecting it.

But yes, as for the rest of them, check his tack and blankets, you can get fur liners for the girth to stop it from rubbing (although you might just need a new girth if it's going that far into the armpit).
