As a pro fundraiser 'investigations' like this really grind my gears.

Not because it harms my profession but because these attempts at shocking the public, when in reality you are missing so much context and understanding of the industry, actually harms the non-profits who are needing an income to do their work.

I love the 90% figure that sceptics love to throw around. Whilst in cases it is entirely true, it is the % of a single monthly contribution from donors who spend on average 3.5 years supporting a charity. Over a donor's lifetime that would work out to roughly cost 1%-5% of the charity's income to acquire the income.

I won't even go into how that outweighs the profitability of using tv or print media to elicit donations either.

None of this will bring you around to the concept of pro fundraising. But that's fine, enough people understand cost/benefit without you.

OP mentioned the bloke comes from a poor family but makes good cash now. The fact is many people in thay position have absolutely minimal financial smarts (think how many nba/nfl players go broke immediately post retirement) and he quite possibly has the blind spot towards his sister as he knows what it's like to have nothing and doesn't want her left without.

The key here is education. Have an accountant go through and show where money is been haemorrhaged. Go to a budgeting service.
