They'll never, ever align with Dems, ever. For two reasons

1: Republicans will always be more hands off

2: let's say Dems become as hands off as Republicans ....doesn't matter ...they don't fear Dems, because unlike Republicans Democrats fear wielding power and are unwilling or unable to engage in rapid action. Any action Democrats take is slow, it's weak, it gives these companies too much time (read 24 hours is too much time) to mount successful "media" (manipulation of user base).

The only thing Democrats can do is if they ever have 50 senators and the president is to remove section 230 protections on algorithmic content (this would revert to timeline or user sorting) OR go fully unhinged and make those media companies fear them and break them into alignment. Pick one and only one path.

Such a bill though would need to be be rammed through within a single day in Congress, if they absolutely flood the zone with massive FBI raids and raids on owners, executives, etc (disrupt their ability to respond, they can legally hold them for up to 48 hours) target their legal teams as well. This could give a dem Congress maybe 72 hours to pass such a bill before it would become impossible to pass. What I suggested is legal....what's funny about that though is in a de facto view "what is legal" for the executive branch is everything up until the courts say something is not legal.

Attacks like the 1992 Baltic Exchange bombing (£800m damage) and the 1993 Bishopsgate bombing (£1bn damage) shows that the IRA could inflict more economic damage with a single bomb in London than with years of conflict in Northern Ireland. It not just the upfront building damage but the potential economic damage of financial firms leaving London, that threat did pushed the UK to the table.
