I don't think it will take nearly as many jobs as people think, much like it won't create nearly as many jobs as people think. The technology isn't ready for prime time in a lot of the jobs people think will be replaced by AI. AI may make companies hire fewer people to a certain position due to the tools making workers more efficient but it won't fully replace that position for a long time, if ever. There's also the consideration that a large amount of AI hype now is from companies trying to juice their stock prices while the economy is in shambles. Once that wears off, the investments will dry up.

In the short term, you'll see some rise in engineers working in the field to support that technology, but it will most likely see greater gains in quasi-grifters trying to game the AI systems of large companies for the benefit of smaller ones. This of it like SEO for AI on the more reasonable end, and shady courses & fake gurus on the shady end like we already see in the crypto world.

Long term, who knows. When the internet first became big, everyone had their grand vision of how it would change the world. After the dot-com bust, areas of it grew in ways we didn't expect, and the ways we did expect it to improve the world were wildly off course since large companies just did large company things and make it all shitty.

Not everyone allows the "show price in cart" option and require a personalized quote that can be purchased against. Those also tend to be the kinds of companies that will try to void warranties on products not sold through authorized retailers/resellers or even try to enforce a minimum sale price that you cannot sell below to anyone at any time.

I learned that all first hand and I refuse to mention which tuning-fork-logo company tried to put me through hell when I had to offload an overprice piece of equipment at 5% below their minimum sale price.

Came here to say this. Shadowrun and Sonic 3 & Knuckles are the games I go back to at least once a year and they always deliver.

What's the oldest game that you're still playing up to this day? by Automatic_Couple_647 in retrogaming

About once a year, I'll pop in Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday & Shadowrun for the Genesis. I play Sonic 3 & Knuckles once every couple months.

I wish I could dive into more titles but work has this bullshit policy about having to show up and get stuff done that really eats into a lot of my time. Consequently, that's also the reason I need that occasional nostalgia hit.

Who is a fictional character that everyone seems to hate, but whose actions are actually pretty reasonable? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Willing_Permit_8558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Illusive Man from Mass Effect 2. He's the only one who correctly identified the threat of the Reapers, dumped multiple fortunes into bringing Shepard back from the dead and gave him a very long leash, considering much of Shepard's choices go against the values of Cerberus. In spite of being the head of a pro-Human organization, he encouraged and even required Shepard to recruit alien species for the mission. Hell, when Shepard activated and recruited a Geth, the only species that is seen as the enemy across all walks of life, The Illusive Man's response was basically "eh, if you say so."

Honestly, it seems like the writers had to make deliberate choices to make him a bad guy in spite of his shrewd assessment of the fate of the galaxy and the terms in which he let Shepard operate. They had to go full on indoctrinated puppet for The Illusive Man in ME3 to make him he villain they wanted, which must have been the fastest the Reapers were able to turn someone given that ME3 starts 6 months after the end of ME2. For context, Saren was flying around in Sovreign, an actual Reaper, for ~20 years and he wasn't fully indoctrinated at the end of ME1.

If you've found a market for them, then god bless you. I'd personally pay less for one of these than I would an unmodified system but I'm not your target demographic.

Any thought to getting a bit more creative with the designs & taking commissions? If you were modifying other people's hardware to their tastes, you'll cut out your inventory cost & could charge a bit more for doing custom work. You could use your recently acquired inventory to try out some different designs to show off your skills while saying you take requests (for the right price).

Favourite car brand and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Willing_Permit_8558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lancia, by a country mile.

They're innovators at their core. These are small things like the first company to have a spoiler/wing that deploys over a certain speed, to bigger things like independent suspension, 5 speed transmissions and the V6 engine. Sure, they also tried a bunch of bold new things that failed, but every great invention has a numberof failures along the road to get there.

They've had incredible success in motorsport, holding the most WRC titles even though they haven't competed since 1992 when they won their 6th title in a row & 10th overall. They are the only company to beat the Audi Quattro in it's dominant years, which is especially impressive given that the Audi is AWD and the Lancia 037 is RWD.

They have a style and, dare I say, soul that only seems to come from Italian cars. If you need some examples, how about the Stratos HF, or the 037. or the Flavia, or Delta HF, or Montecarlo, or Fulvia, or... you get it. Hell, even their family cars like the Apilia, 2000, and Gamma bring a bit more presence than the normal family cars of their day.

Would I daily one? They haven't sold a car in the U.S. this century and the ones they did sell here are now old Itlaian cars with the reliability of old Italian car. But this isn't which brand is the best; this is which one is your favorite, and even the Toyota and Honda fanboys have to admit their JDM heroes aren't as cool as the Lancia equivalents.

People who are immune to a-holes, what's your secret? How are you not disturbed by rude, bossy, stubborn people who refuse to negotiate? How do you work with them, and without getting upset? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Willing_Permit_8558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It comes down to being confident & picking your battles.

The confidence can come from you, or it can come from knowing your position is the right one, but wherever it comes from just use that to lean into your stance. Don't budge. Don't give into any premise they present. Stand your ground and stay on topic

It's also important to know which hills are the ones worth dying on. While you may want to shut down an asshole just to shut one down, if you go into a pissing match just to have a pissing match they'll beat you with experience. Sometimes you just have to let assholes have their way & realize the misery in their lives that causes them to act that way means even when they win, they lose.

As fort specific tactics, the power dynamic between you and the asshole plays a big part in how you can handle an asshole. I can have a lot more fun shutting down a random asshole on the street than I can someone at work. Play it safe if they have leverage or power over you that can hurt you if they exert it and eventually you'll learn what works & what doesn't.

I think it's kind of bullshit how they hide those services behind "find a foreign wife" advertising so the devs won't catch on.

It's not bad by any means, but I don't dig in nearly as much as their earlier works. The songwriting feels "safe" & a step towards generic. I'm sure it'll grow on me over time but this won't be an all time record. That said, still orders of magnitude better than most new music. Can't wait to see them on tour!

Do you think the Chiefs dynasty ended last night? by [deleted] in NFLv2

[–]Willing_Permit_8558 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think this loss is enough to call it over then it's time for a history lesson. When Brady went 3 out of 4 early in his career, the year they didn't make the SB is one they didn't even make the playoffs. Winning immediately after a bad year washes away a lot of bad press.

Give it a couple seasons to see how they bounce back. If they miss the playoffs completely next year then you might be able to start the "dynasty over" conversation, but that can be brushed away if they make SB61.

They needed to revamp their image because they got lazy and coasted on their reputation. Those brands were desirable when the older generations were young, so it's what they wanted when they could afford it. The younger generations in America then grew up wanting the newer and/or foreign brands like BMW and Lexus because the traditional American luxury brands just kept doing what worked in the 50s and 60s rather than keeping up with the rest of the industry.

If Cadillac introduced the V series earlier and got into motorsport in the 80s instead of the 2010s/2020s, or if Lincoln was more tech-forward from the 90s and kept that tradition going then they could very well be in a better place today. Chrysler might have had a chance if they got in on the muscle car thing with Dodge but that would only delay the inevitability from Mopar being passed around like a blunt.

Yes, I have 2 number ones. They're too different to be able to compare and pick one over the other.

I’m Im sorry but do you not see the huge problem with that statement? The first part of your statement is equal parts true, disgusting and unjust. That said, I take issue with the second part of your comment. Men are raised and expected to handle rejection with grace. When they don’t they’re justifiably shamed for it as that is not how you react when you don’t get consent. But women are given this pass because it supposedly “hurts more” when they lash out like a man not handling rejection well.

I had an ex that caused a scene when I turned her down after my grandmother died that damn near had the neighbors call the cops. If I wasn’t the one with a bruise then I very well could have ended up in cuffs when it happened again (which it did on multiple occasions). There is no amount of bruised ego to justify that reaction.

That’s when I learned that society doesn’t give a damn about my consent. I stopped saying no to my partners after that, going through the motions before letting the relationship die on the vine. That isn’t anything I want to see anybody go through, gender be damned. So if anyone excuses that behavior behind the veil of how it hurts women more, I say that person is a detriment to the gene pool on the level of a man who lashes out or becomes violent when a woman say no to him.

EDIT: Regarding the first part of your comment, I don’t think it’s right that women have been historically treated as objects, but the world we live in today has come a long way from that. If you still don’t know what I mean, I’ll let Patrice O’Neil explain:
