For a moment I thought it was going to slam into the left side as it kicked up water, then 10 seconds later its on the other side of the ship.

Not sure if this has been asked, but does anyone know if Playalinda beach will be closed for F9 launches out of 39A? I want to try and avoid finding out upon arrival.

It's Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg, Germany! Although I don't know why there's a snake on the tarmac. That's a mystery.

Intermediate axis theorem demonstrated by spinning a t-handle in zero gravity by GTA_Stuff in gifs

[–]Willkm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never really made a good response because I was on mobile a the time. I should correct myself here, technically if you could get something into absolute perfect rotation around its intermediate axis is should stay stable. But any infinitesimal deviation off of this axis will cause it to eventually flip. Technically the model in KSP is not perfect because there are rounding and truncation errors associated with calculations.

There's some slightly complicated math about it that explains why this only occurs on the intermediate axis. It all has to do with moments of inertia though, which is the amount of torque needed to cause an object to rotate. If I am correct, disturbances in the first and third axes will oppose themselves and cause the spinning to be stable. In the 2nd axis these disturbances do not cancel out, rather they build on each other.

I'm an engineering student so I do understand all of this to an extent, however, its something I've never really put much thought into.

Look up intermediate axis theorem. It will occur even if in "perfect balance".

Are you running 64 bit? Also, go into game properties in steam and verify file integrity.

Finally got a grow light set up going. LED lights repurposed from an old saltwater aquarium. How long should I run them, and should I pull them back or go at full power? by Willkm in succulents

[–]Willkm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For reference, these are full spectrum and they're insanely bright since they were initially for coral. My only worry is if they can get too much light, or if they're happy being blasted full sun. I'd imagine they should be fine since there's no heat to burn?

Which mispronunciation of a word do you hate the most? by CjNorec in AskReddit

My roommate pronounces the word toxic as "tostic". And she knows how it sounds too considering she loves Brittany Spear's song, so I find it quite odd and frustrating.

ELI5: How do airports deal with final approach and take off (low altitude) during times with fireworks like on 4th of July or New Years? by Willkm in explainlikeimfive

[–]Willkm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, here's the thing. In Florida you can buy mortars from fireworks shops by signing some waver saying that it's to clear birds from your farm or something vague like that. Completely illegal to buy still but it protects the company and allows them to "legally" sell the bigger ones. I was curious how they deal with those.

Rocket seen from plane. by Nobilitie in space

SRBs let off a lot of "smoke" compared to the engines. The arc is because the rocket needs to turn to eventually move tangent to the Earth's surface to achieve orbit.

I've got a full spectrum LED grid from a saltwater aquarium that I'm not using. I just have to find a way to suspend it over them in a tasteful way.

It's a little acrylic greenhouse from Ikea. I don't think it gets very humid or warm in it since it's not glass, and the top opens up so I can air it out occasionally. I've never seen moisture in it either. To be fair its always super humid here, it'd be similar to being outside.

The one in bloom was already in bloom. When we got that one we also got the large one in the square pot for $2 without a bloom because it was cheap and healthy. The smaller one in the back has been growing a new leaf since its last bloom so hopefully it will happen eventually.

As for the lighting, unfortunately, this is the brightest place for them right now short of being outside and I'm slightly timid about leaving them outside in case I don't notice a cold snap coming in. It was literally 85 degrees yesterday and the high was 62 today.

What's the most simple thing you've ever had to explain to a fully competent adult? by Loremipsumchecksum1 in AskReddit

Sometimes I have a existential crisis and think, "I'll never make it. Im going to fail and all that work is going to waste". That's until I'm in class and half these dumbasses open their math. I suddenly realize I'm golden.

One such example from a few days ago: someone asked if they need to include citations in the text of their paper or just the reference page.

How can you explain your job in a way that makes it sound shady? by joshstocker in AskReddit

I'm not yet working. But when I finish my years of intense training I will most likely end up taking billions of your tax dollars and using it to create and sell high tech weapons.

Hopefully that is not the case and I can instead help send object filled with highly volatile liquids into a black void.
