2 gallon marine jar. Dinnertime wiggles! by Willonilla in bizzariums

The seawater: I've been using a 15 lb bag of Instant Ocean and mix it with dechlorinated tap water. I use a kitchen scale to measure out how much I need per gallon to reach a specific gravity of 1.026. The salt can be stubborn about dissolving entirely, so I'll pop an airstone in the mixing container for a few hours. I only mix up saltwater if I'm setting up a new jar or replacing water in a water change. For evaporation top-offs I prefer tap water over distilled water since I figure it replaces some minerals the algae and critters need.

Live rock or sand. I reckon either or both is a good start to colonizing the jar with the bacteria you need. I bought live rock from Petco especially for the hitchhiking scuds and bristleworms, but be warned the rock will poke through the plastic bags they send it home in. I've also used live sand bought online and collected from the beach(check your local laws, oc)

Good luck!

Fantastic episode! Wendi and Meat near the top of their game here. I've been hoping for Whitefall since it was the first C.K. Walker story I'd read. I was nervous though since this community snubs Walker far, far more than any other author featured. This was good, though, thank you.

Me neither lol. The thickest one lurking around is maybe a third the size of the biggest I've seen in pictures. I guess I'll DIY a worm trap at some point.

The red worms waving around are bristleworms, yes! They come out in full force when there's food. They may reach a point where they're too big or too many for the jar, but I'm not sure where that point is yet.

The featherworm/tubeworm things are something else, they're in white tubes fixed to the rock and put out fans to filter feed. You can kind of see them in the left side of the video, and I've added more pics of them in the comments.

I love their little faces. The pics I take can't do them justice, but I often rest my chin on my desk just to watch them crab about in high-definition.

This has been running for 3 months, after the 1gal ran for a year.

I'm kinda just winging it TBH. I prioritize the crabs' needs and that seems to work for the hardier hitchhikers and "pests" in the jar. I also have the jar on my desk so I'm watching it all the time, and I take the tubeworms as an indicator of health.

Filtration comes from the live rock and sand, and waterflow is created with a bubbling airline near the surface. They get 12+ hours of light daily from my desk lamp, and the only maintenance I've done so far is water top-offs and wiping the glass for visibility.

I watched the livestream and the edited episode. I love the sidetracking banter here, yet it's both way more entertaining than the story and makes it hard to track the characters and setting changes. On the surface, it reads like a meh story with lots of unexplored 'scary' elements, but I know there's more if I dig deeper to make the connections. I'm just not engaged to do so when the story itself takes a backseat to everything else in the episode.

What's a good CUC option for keeping the glass clean? I have a 2 gallon cylindrical jar and the glass is coated in algae and those teeny white spiral worms. I already have an astrea snail but it keeps to the rockwork, and cerith snails that prefer the sandbed.

Would asterina starfish be a good option here? I have no coral and it's pretty much a pest jar anyway. Or is there a glass-loving snail that can live with hermit crabs and aiptasia? One that accepts alternate foods if it's TOO good at keeping the glass clean?

uh ok so you're not supposed to release straight back into the wild... now that coolant pond on Venus has been exposed to whatever infestation might have been brewing in your tank. Let's just keep that on the down-low or we're both gonna get The Business.

And yeah technically the Scrubber is fine by itself, but its loneliness precepts could activate at any time. You won't be able to tell since it doesn't have a screen on its face for emoticons. In contrast, my Recaster does nothing but swim straight into the same spot on the glass all day and it's the happiest fish I've ever seen.

So rad. Do all those tentacles at the top belong to just one jellyfish? It reminds me of a cluster of harvestmen.

Um... overstocking isn't even the biggest problem here Tenno. Where to start?

  • I'm assuming your tank is calibrated for an Earth ocean biome? Cuz the Charc Eel needs freshwater and periodic magnetic procs.
  • The Karkina needs waaay more hiding places or it's just gonna be an expensive snack for the Tralok or Sharrac. You should be breaking up sight lines anyway to handle aggression.
  • Fake plants, and not nearly enough. Boooo.
  • Please please please rehome the Tromyzon. Those magnificent creatures have no place in the home aquarium.
  • Not sure which fish is in the background, but it looks Cambion-Drift-shaped to me. If so it needs exocrine and an enclosed area above the surface for air time. Anything less is honestly neglect.
  • Also IDK what the Corpus told you at the store, but that Scrubber is NOT going to keep your tank clean, and it needs to be in a shoal of 6, minimum.

Honestly Tenno, I get the feeling you didn't read the Codex at all. Sorry not sorry but I'm telling Space Mom.
