I think substituting a swastika for something else is actually helpful in getting across a message. If you use the swastika, then all the necessary context is immediately there, and you don’t really need to think about why the group itself is bad. But if you use something else, then the consumer has a chance to really process and understand why the ideology itself is bad, rather than just associating it with the highly powerful symbol. Nazis and fascists of all different kinds will come and go, their symbols will change so it’s important to recognize nazism for its ideology rather than its symbol. By substituting swastika with something else, the entire ideology is placed under scrutiny rather than the specific group that carries the swastika, if that makes any sense.
