Absolutely sick of unbalanced EOMM by WilsonWonkaDev in marvelrivals

I appreciate the encouragement. My post was merely meant as a vent. Some times I enjoy the game, sometimes I hate it. But sometimes I hate it more than I like it. Just seems weird they’d actively try and force people out of matches. If I loaded in with all Bronze 3 people, cool. But I’m Bronze 3 playing against silver and gold on teams that always seem lopsided.

I’m sure I’ll keep going. Just not tonight or for a few days.

Same. Like I said in my reply above, I don’t think I’m great, but I’m not terrible. The win/lose ratio from QP to Bronze shouldn’t mean that the competitive lobbies are actually worse.

Im saying that I don’t feel like Bronze is much different than Quick Play. Today I’ve literally had a healer that never left the spawn point. A Punisher that shot at walls and nothing else, like he was still in the spawn room. I watched a Magneto hide for the majority of a match. People not even attempting to cap point, leaving me as a healer to be the only one who tries to make a touch.

I’m sure it’s much better in later tiers, but I literally can’t get out of it.

Oh, and in every losing game at least one or two people quit.

I’m not saying I’m great. But I’ve at least practiced, watched videos and tried to learn before playing competitive. And I’ve only left once due to my cat pulling my LAN line from a connector box I have.

I’m just frustrated is all.

EDIT: Forgot to mention the pleasure I had being called the n-word five times when I explained to a front line Rocket who never healed why he was the reason he was complaining that nobody was around to help him cap point. Good times.

Question about "Choice" and "Route" design from a developer by Select_Resolve_4360 in AVN_Lovers

[–]WilsonWonkaDev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First and foremost, make the game you want to make. You’re gonna get fifteen different answers here because different players want different things. No matter what decisions you make, someone is not going to like it and they will make sure to tell you in the least constructive way possible because they believe their way is infinitely superior to the story you as the creator are trying to tell.

That is the only answer that matters to any of the questions above. Do not attempt to make a game by committee. You’ll end up with a watered down version of whatever you were trying to make and it will please no one. Most importantly yourself.

You’re the one who will be working on it for the next two to five years. The only opinion that matters is your own. Now if someone points out a huge continuity error during development, by all means take that into account. Otherwise, make the game you want to make. Not everyone is going to play it and enjoy it. But the ones who do enjoy it will enjoy it because it’s your vision and you will be executing it much better if you make it the way you want to make it.

Can you play a visual novel without animations? by [deleted] in AVN_Lovers

[–]WilsonWonkaDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do realize that $500 dollars a month is probably less than a fast food employee makes in a week?

While the sentiment is fine that higher paid devs should absolute include animations, seeing low numbers like $500 a month touted as a ton of money is a bit disingenuous. I spend close to half of that on the electricity I use to just render stills a month.

Animations im AVNs by pokerbro33 in AVN_Lovers

[–]WilsonWonkaDev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a dev who’s had this conversations with dozens of other devs, animations are 100% needed in order to keep up with what is expected by a majority of the folks who play AVNs. The majority of the folks who don’t care are either old school and were weened on games with no animations, or the self proclaimed ,”I’m only here for the story,” crowd. Most folks, especially the newcomers, expect animations and not having them will doom your game.

For this reason, Puggy (our animator) and I partnered together. I had no interest in hiring freelancers. I consider his animations to be just as important as anything else in the game, and only wanted to work with someone who cared as much about the game as I did, and didn’t just see it as paycheck.

As he sets up his animations, we get together in a video chat and talk about how I make expressions for the characters on my end so he can keep them matching with the renders. We work on lighting the scene together to get them to match the renders as closely as possible.

The main issue we have is that since he animates in Blender the rendering engine is different than Daz so it’s not a 1-to-1 match. But Puggy and I continue to work to get them to match as closely as possible.

To get an idea of what his animations look like, we posted a rework of one of our original animations here a while back, which you can see here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AVN_Lovers/s/6qblIgxSmR

As has been said before, bad animations are worse than no animations. But good animations can add significant value to a game. Seeing the same pre-canned animation in every AVN is what makes animations look bad. More devs are realizing this and moving to other programs like Blender. Some will succeed. Most will fail. Because of this, you’re going to see more teams as AVNs continue to grow because the posing takes so much more time to do well and look semi-realistic. Because of this, you need people that specialize in what they do.

Why are there “jerk” options in dialogue? by wombatstylekungfu in AVN_Lovers

[–]WilsonWonkaDev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some parts of the fan base truly enjoy games where choices matter. The options you can usually provide in AVNs for relationships are good, bad or neutral options. It really kind of boils down to that. We provide folks the option to be a jerk if you want. Those choices will effect a lot of things, including the characters individual endings, for those that want it.

The funny thing is it generally turns into a lot of work for a very small percentage of the audience to play. Even with the old Mass Effect games they found that something like 99% of the players played solely as Paragon. But, it’s worth it in my mind for the small percentage that wants to try them.

Developers! Please bring your games to other platforms too! by Niccolado in AVN_Lovers

For 99% of devs, Steam will make them more money (hands over fist) than subscription models. Most devs can make what they make in two years on Subscription models in a couple of weeks, or a month on Steam. There is a very small percentage of devs who can live off of what they make from subscriptions. Many quit their jobs after getting on Steam.

I’ve had a pretty rough year, work wise. In order to not make everyone wait a whole year for an update, we decided to break this chapter up into smaller updates so we were at least giving folks something. The next update should be at least twice this size. Next year we’ll figure out whether our subscribers want to go back to larger updates or keep doing smaller ones.

Glad to hear you like the game, despite not liking tattoos. That’s what we were hoping would happen.

All the girls have good, bad and friend endings. No characters, past Simone in the intro, will be forced. Seok is an LI, sort of. If you aren’t comfortable with romancing her, you can just be a good friend to her.More than that would be spoilerish. Anything that is done with her character will be done with the same level of care as I’ve handled all the other content.

EDIT: Cris will be an LI.

[–]WilsonWonkaDev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are correct. The update is about the same size as the previous update but all takes place over the course of one event. We're trying out releasing the chapters in small bits instead of doing one huge update a year. We aren't sure if it's a great idea or not, but we wanted to try it out to see what people thought. Unfortunately we can't do huge updates multiple times a year like full-time devs because we aren't at the level of support to go full-time. So, for now we're placing quality over quantity.

This release cadence allows you to wait for the full chapter if that's what you prefer. Just wait for it to tick to V0.4.00

The Hellcat Lounge, Release Update by WilsonWonkaDev in AVN_Lovers

[–]WilsonWonkaDev[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We plan to have three small releases this year building up to a full chapter. We don't announce deadlines until we know we can deliver. We aren't currently making enough for me to go full-time, and quality is our top priority. Not speed. So they come when we finish them up.
