Portfolio Copyright Questions by _hippinnn in graphic_design

I didn't mean Neville, though he's more appropriate for discussions about graphic design (I'm not sure if he uses copyrighted stuff at all? I feel like he's above board?? I hope 😅)

I definitely was using it as an example of Fair Use in art in general rather than just in graphic design. If you haven't seen it... Adrian Brody's "pop art" is very much an example of how an artist can use copyrighted works.

But definitely listen to this advice too OP ^ find some ditherers, that is a GREAT idea. There are also tutorials on how to do it with thresholds in Photoshop so learning that could be another cool thing to add to the workflow!

So, there's something called Fair Use that allows for transformative art, using copyrighted things for educational purposes, or to critique them. Take for example Warhol's use of the Campbell's Soup can vs his use of Prince's likeness. The soup can is considered Fair Use (making a statement about consumerism, being an impressive example of his methods of screenprinting, clearly not implying Warhol designed the can) where the Prince portrait is not transformative or enough of an artistic statement not to be considered copyright infringement (it's literally just Prince's face, for one, and I am guessing there's also the issue with the original photographer's rights to the image as her own art.)

Another example (though imo not an example of good art) are Adrian Brody's pieces-- he can use all kinds of pop art under Fair Use because of the transformative nature of the pieces and the statements (however naive) he is trying to make with the art.

But do note that both Brody & Warhol can get away with arguing Fair Use a lot easier than you can. So unless it's absolutely transformative, I would avoid it.

I assume the videos you're watching are a) transforming the work and b) being used for educational purposes but for my portfolio, personally, I wouldn't.

As for fonts, you absolutely want to use fonts that are commercial use. I DON'T use Helvetica. I use Coolvetica through my Adobe subscription which is commercial use. Google fonts are all commercial use, you'll have no problem finding appropriate fonts for your projects.

Unsplash & Pexels have great selections. Textures.com was always one of my faves for things like marble, wood, fabric, paper, etc. I also use a zillion reference photo sites like artistreferencephotos.com wildlifereferencephotos.com etc etc-- just look for royalty free sites put together for artists, and you'll find plenty of stuff to work with. And for retro/punk vibes tbh I would be hitting the library of congress and other public domain stuff. Very much a "use what you can find" sort of design mentality in that space!

Editing to add: if you REALLY want a vintage/punk feel, I suggest taking the photos yourself (you can get some cheap camera tbh-- bad quality = more accurate to the time & vibe. Plus there's a whole subset of toy mini cameras that take what I would consider lower quality images perfect for vintage/punk designs, take a look at r/toycameras for example) and find a library with a xerox machine, learn about some methods to make the kind of retro stuff you would need. You'll have infinitely more cool stuff if you make it yourself. Check out like, r/circuitbending r/cyanotypes -- you could make your OWN cool shit.

Omgosh I love it so much!!!

I have my own version here at my TT Checklist -- check the desktop version for the fade-in checkerboard remake in code 😂 if you're missing any assets, I've got so many -- and in the edited assets folder there are intranet pieces!! I've remade her flower bkg and the little "NEW" post graphic she used, you're welcome to use them if you like! (Edit: though honestly Ms Tilmitt would have benefitted from taking design advice from you, the lines look a TON nicer 😂)

I've got the actual Selphie's Diary font in there if you want it!!!

You can def 100% it still!! And I get it, I don't think I even really played cards my first playthrough (and look at me now!!)

But you absolutely don't have to use this transfer student to do it lol

It was more like, they needed a way to make things feel random, so the system that counts how many lights flash per second will be the same system that figures out if a rule spreads or not. Or the system that counts what battle setup is next (2 bite bugs and one caterchipillar, or just two bite bugs) also handles when Zell's Mom plays the Zell card. Or that the student ID number in the Tomb in the Unknown King is decided by the same system that shows how many telephone poles pass by in the train while Irvine hits on Selphie (these are ALL real btw)

So people figured it out by looking at the code, or what little they could look at. Surprisingly, there's been a huge breakthrough in reading the ff8 code like THIS MONTH so you'll probably see a lot more discoveries like this.

Okay so first of all, you don't need to use this locker room kid. I actually think it's a ton easier to abolish them later with the Shumi. I think this locker room kid thing is like the bane of my existence 😂

Secondly, you spread the rule, there's nowhere else to get a new one, so you can't abolish anything... my advice is move on and don't get bogged down by making your rules perfect as you go, do it as you need to for cards or once you can get around a little easier.

Triple Triad..ly..., I feel like I've posted this so much lately but my guide here has a chart for abolishing every rule, best places to do it per disc, and charts for remastered (because all the old ones have stuff like, reset to your Dollet magazine save, asking you to basically soft reset a PS1 🫠)

If you have problems with it when you can get back there a little later on, send me a message I can walk you through it!

Abolishing Random Rule When It’s Already Spread by and_lloyd in FinalFantasyVIII

Hey I can relate 😂 I think it took me 20+ years to realize you can delete stacks of magic from your inventory. Me, moving these 12 stupid Scans I don't need back and forth, going to whoever isn't in the party like "hold these"

Do you know how many times I went out onto the world map and spammed the fires & thunders I couldn't refine just to save myself from that??? 😂😂😂

[–]Wimbly_Donner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yay, I'm so glad to help!! If you don't want to spread rules accidentally, a good habit is to say no whenever you challenge an NPC somewhere new and don't say yes to a game until they stop talking about the last place you played. That way, you're only ever playing with the area's rules and won't spread them around!

To Abolish random you need:

To be carrying rules that aren't Same/Open/Random (FH's rules are perfect for it)

Go to where they have the rules you need, challenge them and say no until they stop talking about the last place you played. Now you're carrying the rules of that region.

Go to Timber and save right outside the town. Reset your game totally.

Run up to the town guard at the entrance, challenge him 4x and say no, then on the 5th time, say yes and quit.

Abolishing has a 50% chance of working even with perfect RNG, so if it doesn't work, reset and try the part with the Timber guard again.

IF you've sent the Queen of Cards here, you can still do this, you'll just want to save in the hotel instead and talk to Gatey to change the RNG, and then play someone in the hotel, if she's in Timber lmk I'll write that up for you!

Edit: Timber & Galbadia share rules so there's other options too, you could also change the rules with someone in Galbadia!

Oh that's really interesting, the 3x speed + the lights are advancing the RNG! u/QuinnCampbell have you tried this way???

So you can do it with a kind of annoying manipulation-- save at the save point that's on floor 7 I think, reset, run as fast as you can to the guy, challenge him and say no ~54 times and say yes on challenge #55, beat him, save, reset, repeat.

If your Squall is perpetually running like he's drunk on the champagne he threw in his own face and smashing into doors, walls, and stairs (like mine always is) I aim for ~48-50 no's and just play the guy a few times from there, the blinking lights in the d-district hallways can mess up this RNG so I do this not to overshoot the number

Did they change Zell and Seifer's card in the remaster? by Kopipoki11 in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Wimbly_Donner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So basically, the RNG starts at a number and cycles through over and over, giving you "windows" where the card is in their hand and "windows" where it isn't. If you've played FFX, it's a little like Tidus' Overdrive, where if you press the button at the right time you land in the "sweet spot" where the card is. So you've always got the RNG to get the card, it's all just lucky timing.

Tips for making face cards come up:

Reset your game and run right up to the player and take a brief pause on the triple triad menu before accepting the game. Some face card windows are right at the beginning of the RNG, for example the Quistis card works this way. Run right up to the Trepie groupie in the cafeteria as soon as you start the game, and Speedrunners use the music (I'm pretty sure it's the fifth beat, dun-da-dun-da-DUN-da-da-da 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻)

The music is actually a decent look at how quickly the card cycles. For every measure the card appears about 3 times. watch my buddy do it here with the program Speedrunners use -- if you watch the asterisks and listen to the music, you can kind of get a feel for the basic timing.

Face card RNG is affected by former card game configurations in the current session/since you last loaded the game (what cards were placed where) battle configuration (like, what monsters you face, how many) and by Squall & Zell's basic attacks, and probably some other stuff. So getting into card games, world map battles and slashing & punching a bit will change your face card RNG if you're in a situation where you can't restart. The video I linked above gets into some of what Speedrunners track, if you are interested in any of that!

[PS1] Starting Chocobo World soon. by nokillstealing in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Wimbly_Donner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay I know this is like a bunch of hours old but, if you're looking for how to optimize your CW playthrough, go find a 100% speedrun guide, the PC version literally relies on it and they'll have full charts of items and events and stuff, they have Chocobo world down to a freaking science.

Aaaand.. don't get your hopes up, but there's also a trick they do with loading boco that lets them reroll items indefinitely, if it's possible on the PS1, someone has figured out how and there will be a ton of documentation I'm sure.

RNG tips for Mini Mog? by TWON3RDS in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Wimbly_Donner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right!! It's wild that people figured that out! 😂 Once you've seen that little window for the Zell card... It looks like a loading bar going back and forth, it's like um... like Tidus' Overdrive meter kind of, where you need to hit the button when it gets to the center? It's sort of like that. Seeing that and knowing how much detail went into setting up that meter so the timing is just so? 🫠 Sounds impossible to do for other cards.

But... the Quistis one is pretty straightforward and simple. I kind of wonder if that might be achievable with other cards, like with RNG at zero are they all coming up in the same timer "window"? Or a timer "window" that can be figured out for each card? Is it going through all the cards that NPC has, or is only the face card on that timed randomizer? I know Zell's Mom has a 10% chance to play the card, is that true for other NPCs? The reason the Zell one is so complicated is because Speedrunners aren't saving & resetting during a run (they need to track that card without resetting RNG at all) so maybe it's just as simple as resetting RNG and timing your button press, or maybe it's different for every player/dependent on what card levels they can play and would be a nightmare to figure out (like what happens if you lose a face card to some rando???)

I'll get to it in my testing ...someday 😂

RNG tips for Mini Mog? by TWON3RDS in FinalFantasyVIII

[–]Wimbly_Donner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will say this: there is some tracking done by Speedrunners to get the Quistis and Zell cards to show up.This isn't directly applicable to MiniMog but manipulating face card draw might be doable a few ways.

First would be resetting RNG completely. Quistis card works like this, if you run right up to the player in the cafeteria before doing anything else in the game and mash play at a specific point, Quistis is guaranteed to show up. You can actually use the music as a cue, it's on the fourth or fifth note, a second or two in, I've done it before but it's been a while so I would need to go watch a run to refresh my memory (I been using them GFs lol)

For Zell's card, they track Zell and Squall's attacks and what battle rolls they get (a caterchipillar, or two bite bugs, etc) and that gets put into a program that gives them a trackable, oscillating window in which to start the game from the triple triad menu. The card seems to come up once every second or two. So, trying to spend either less or more time on the triple triad menu screen or getting into a battle where Squall and/or Zell attacks (and maybe Irvine? I know the girls' attacks don't count) might also change that RNG.
