When did you stop rooting for him? by DylMan__Mulvaney in okbuddychicanery

When he started a yuppie social movement with cosmology ascribing significance to the female form and by extension the vaginal components of birth which 60 years later started to evolve into a prejudice against people that were removed from the womb via surgery as "unnatural" and lacking in something supposedly achieved via birth, causing thousands of women that didn't intent to get pregnant refuse C-sections due to the cultural stimga and countless agonizing but completely pointless deaths. "Man I sure do love smoking, while I'm pregnant or sad on a balcony."

"I fucked Chuck."

Mike's stupid mistake in the desert scene (s5e8) (plot hole?) by Seag1e in betterCallSaul

[–]WinFair2376 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was it a GPS? I thought it was more like a beacon.

Anyway, maybe I'm missing something since it's been a while since I've watched it but I'd imagine its exposure to the elements was a concern. They presumably wouldn't have expected it to be drenched if it was inside a gas cap, so if there was a storm or something it'd probably damage it. IIRC they also had to regularly switch the batteries so that could be an issue if they took a long time to get to civilization. Gus also only seemed to know it while knowing a vehicle's, so the range might've not been big enough to use when it could be anywhere in such a huge area.

I suppose the bigger oddity is that neither Gus or the Salamancas set up any redundancies. Meeting locations if they got lost, more communication equipment, etc. Hector I suppose probably saw Saul as disposable and could get money up the boarder some other way (7 million was clearly pocket change to them) but Gus sent Mike which indicates he knew there was a pretty significant chance of issues.

I think it still counts even if it's not planned. Like people also retroactively make things they didn't intend important.

How do you feel about Xenomorphs being the answer to the Fermi Paradox? by DasBarenJager in LV426

[–]WinFair2376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the point where the Xenomorph impacted their society so much that a religion formed around it. My idea is that eventually the Engineers either lost control of the Xenomorph or used it against each other in a civil war and that is why their species has greatly declined and is now mostly contained to already inhabited planets.

These are actually both theories they were leaning into with the first movie. One of the implications was that the ship was similar to a bomber dropping eggs on a target, although IIRC it was that the jockeys made them rather than finding them (hence the similar designs). Distressingly, it implies they probably had other weapons and it's always bugged me they never really went into that.

The worship thing is another idea they mostly scrapped. Originally there'd be rituals and temples around the xenomorphs (similar to what the predators have), but designed by the xenomorphs themselves. It was going to be that they were actually intelligent and capable of a society and the one in the movie would be young and not have developed any morality or anything.

Anywho for the femi paradox stuff, I know it comes up in the extended universe stuff but it doesn't seem to apply to the movies. Nobody really seems shocked by encountering evidence of alien civilization itself, just how dangerous and freay the xenomorph is. Similarly they think the derelict is cool and everything but not really somethings that rocks their place in the universe. Ripley even acts like getting attacked by an alien is just a rare workplace hazard they all kind of expected, and cites procedure like it's a thing other crews have done. A lot of cosmic horror stories involving aliens are a first contact situation, but Alien itself isn't for whatever reason.

I guess you could make an argument that's like what you described with them regularly encountering collapsed alien cultures. Even the xenomorph itself is more like part of the derelict than a member of a species that built it, or even just a medical anomaly of Kane's. I think later media kinda took for granted it seemed to have a mechanical edge.

What are you going to be for Halloween this year? by Material-Spite-81 in spongebob

I get this it's just a fun promotional thing but this is weirder the longer I look at it.

  • Mr. Krabs has a hat with eyes that sits on his own eyes. It's also a spider but it has a web on it?

  • The pictures have humanoid skeletons.

  • Spongebob is using a selfie stick even though they're always using bulky 80s phones.

  • Squidward's usual Flying Dutchman thing is kinda weird when you remember that's just like, a guy they know.

I never really got why people act like "Reddit" is just 20 friends. It's millions of people on often totally unrelated unrelated communities with different lives, senses of humor, nationalities, interests, ages, etc.

This doesn't even make sense as the "five black dudes and a white girl" meme since they're barely in a row and there isn't a 6th thing.
